USA Internet too slow?
The max speed I can get, here in the states, is 100mb and it is very expensive!  Right now I've got 12mb at $49 a month.  What kind of speeds are offered in your country?  And how much do you pay?

Here's an article:   http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2377374/U-S-danger-slipping-10-tech-savvy-countries-slow-priced-internet-web-report-shows.html

Makes me glad I'm still at University; if I want fast internet all I need to do is head to the library or go to work. :p At home I get 18Mbps with a (apperantly) static IP for $49 per month and is livable, but I still can't help but be jealous of people that have it better.

Out here in the middle of nowhere, North Carolina, I get 720Kbps (90Kilobytes/sec). I wish I was back at my uni.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
I get a fairly decent (for the US) 25 Mbps. It's not especially fast but I do give my ISP credit for consistency. I've had maybe one real outage in the past 4 years, and it was only for two hours or so. Random hiccups are nonexistent.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
I have 25Mbps here in Southern California, and a really good price for it (I think about $33/month for the first year). Faster speeds are available, but they get much more expensive, and this is good enough to stream HD video and play online without too much lag.
Also no fiber optic service in this particular neighborhood. Stupid Verizon.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
120mbps download, 10mbps upload. Its in 40$ 3 in 1 thing so I can't tell exact price. The downside is that I only get 45 ;( But since I don't need 120 download but I need 10 upload, its fine.
Oh guys, use that [ url ][ img ][ /img ][ /url ] :/

Some ISPs will prioritize traffic with speedtest so they look better than they really are. :P

Re: USA Internet too slow?
i believe i'm rated at 25/5, and i can't imagine needing or even noticing any more than that.  i don't think i've ever encountered a download that was limited by me instead of the upload of the server.  together with TV/dvr, i play a bit above $100/month.  i'm pretty sure i'm supposed to be able to get a lower price than that and i got kindof screwed when i moved in, but fixing this would mean dealing with verizon customer service.  i've tried that once, and after more than two hours on a combination of hold and bouncing to three different operators was told that they couldn't fix the problem i had.  and as a result, i'm currently locked out of my account through the website login.

30/5 myself, with tv and phone included for 55 euros. That gives somewhere about 73 dollars for net, tv, dvr and phone.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
Middle of nowhere Northern Nevada, paying $50/mo for 6Mbit with (apparently) static IP, 12Mbit is available for $70/mo (guessing on the prices from what I remember of the sign-up sheet; I don't actually pay the bill).  Random hiccups are frequent.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
Since I live in the middle of nowhere and am tight on cash, I downgraded from my only option, (<56k) dialup.
I've since then started communicating with a string, and a cup.
I'm currently considering upgrading to smoke signals and carrier pidgeon, then working myself up to morse code.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
You could always use HughesNet :ick:

That's under favorable conditions, mind you.  And with a 10 Gigabyte per month cap on combined upload and download traffic.  Oh, not to worry, they also have an extra 10 GB each month associated with the "Bonus period" between 2AM and 7AM in your timezone.  10GB works out to about 335 MB per day incidentally.  All for the low, low price of $60 / mo.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
Have 2 12/1.5Mbps lines.  Fastest available in this area.  The real problem is reliability.  Since I "upgraded" back in November I've had outages at least half a dozen times where they need to repair the lines.  Having problems with both lines again with service scheduled for Monday.  They keep trying to push faster and faster speeds over the same old copper.   I have 2 choices for internet around here.  AT&T or the local cable company which of course buys it's service from AT&T.  Although fiber was run to the city over 20 years ago they won't install the equipment to make use of it.  According to the technicians they consider fiber for residential use too unreliable.  Apparently they did a test and it failed due to temperature changes causing the fiber connections on the routers to fail even indoors.  So they are currently working on pushing over 36Mbps over the same old copper.  Guess I get to look forward to that upgrade in another 10 years.
No-one ever listens to Zathras. Quite mad, they say. It is good that Zathras does not mind. He's even grown to like it. Oh yes. -Zathras

Re: USA Internet too slow?
I get 10mb/s (well, I do when I'm at home), which is pathetic considering the ISP is ostensibly a fibre optic one. I think it might be because my dad is too stingy to get anything better than the base package.
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

Re: USA Internet too slow?
We have Verizon FiOS here, but I honestly have no idea what our raw speeds are, since I'm stuck on wireless-G.  I'll need to try on the system that's actually connected to the router, but I managed 15.88/5.04 off the wireless, which works for me.
