Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
Just saw Pacific Rim.

Story and writing were ****, but I didn't expect anything out of that anyway. Kaiju vs Giant Robots, **** YEAH! :D

Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
Spoiler:
It made no sense for the guy to survive at the end. That was probably just to please the audience. Presumably he'll end up dead in the director's cut.

GTFO.

Spoiler:
They'll kiss. They already did in the novelization, which is based on the final script. And I've seen copies of the first script, so I know he was always meant to survive.

Though personally I think them not kissing is actually kind of brilliant. They have Drifted, been in each other's heads. Compared to that, any physical expression of affection or intimacy is nothing.

Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
I saw it a few weeks ago. It dragged in ways that STID didn't, but overall it was a good time. I still don't understand why people couldn't have used cannons to shoot down the kaiju instead of relying on big, expensive robots, given how effective projectile-launching weapons are IRL. Firing cannons wouldn't make for a good movie, though, especially not one with the special effects budget this one must have had.

It took several days and nuclear weapons to kill the first and smallest kaiju.  Cannons just do not cut it.  That also has the rather nasty side effect of littering the ground for miles with pieces of dead kaiju, which quite effectively poisons everything it touches unless cleaned up immediately.  Cleaning it up immediately is impossible if it covers a dozen square miles.

I don't think there's much doubt that, in the real world, a combination of conventional air power, saturation missile fire (from guided missile frigates or whatever) and specially designed artillery could bring down a Kaiju pretty efficiently. But is that really a movie you want to go see? Or do you want to go watch a giant robot do it? :D

I have an answer for that: The universe that movie takes place in is not in line with our own
Conventional weapons are thus less effective in that universe and we must rely on awesome robots

Well, I wasn't gonna derail WHIYL further with Pacific Rim discussion, but since you guys are doing it...

Spoiler:
I'll grant this much at least.

Spoiler:
And slicing kaiju in half with a giant sword doesn't get kaiju parts everywhere? :P

Could be.

why does pacific rim keep sounding like a bad anime? you guys are making me want to see it less.
Like I said, it was entertaining overall, just dragged at times.

Answer me this simple question:

If you cut a piece of steak with a knife, does it get everywhere?

If you try to cut a piece of steak with a bullet fired from a handgun, I'd be interested in seeing the aftermath of your kitchen.

I can't believe we're still having this conversation, but...

A more accurate analogy would be slicing a living cow in half in mid-air (don't do that). Would that get everywhere?

Still probably less everywhere than using a cannon or other explosives to do it, yes.

Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
This should probably get split out (although digressions in WHIYL are common), but I was thinking more along the lines of projectile-launching weapons that leave bullets or similar objects embedded in the target rather than ripping the target's body parts off, although impact from any firearm is presumably going to result in some blood loss at the very least. But all of this is way outside of my expertise, so I wouldn't know.

Anyways, I don't have anything else to say about this, so carry on. :)

Re: Pacific Rim (Split from WHIYL)
Yeah, agreed. You guys don't have to do this. There doesn't have to be a realistic reason for everything. The reason Jaegers are the most effective way of fighting Kaiju is because if they weren't then the movie wouldn't be about mech battles.

You know what you're getting into with this kind of movie. Complaining about the mechs is about as disingenuous as complaining about the impracticalities of manned starfighters in FS. :p

The movie's writer name-dropped Big O in the intro to the prequel comic that he also wrote.  That should tell you everything you need to know. :D

I mostly suspended disbelief, but "why not cannons?" refused to go into suspension. :P Although yeah redsniper is right.

EDIT:
Big O?
I was wondering that, too, actually.

Big O?

Japanese Mecha Batman. I don't remember it very well, but it did manage to get a purely US-funded second season, which is rare for anime.
