"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

i like authors you can respect without reading a single one of their books.
I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

  • We'z got a nob to lead us boys, wadaful.
I was very saddened by this. I only read 3 or 4 of his books and even though they were long dense and wordy they were among some of the best I've ever read.

I feel really bad now that I've never actually read one of his novels, though I've enjoyed several movies that have come from them, and the game series that bear his name.  66 is too soon to check out. :(

I'm saddened but not terribly surprised - he was a notorious chain smoker. His doorstoppers helped me kill off a LOT of boredom.

As usual, the books are far superior to the movies (at least, as long as the books are the original... don't get me started on how the novelization of The Phantom Menace was worse than the movie - yes, worse).

Having both read and seen The Hunt for Red October, I'm not convinced the book is better.

However, both are rather excellent, so that's not saying a whole lot.

It may be the exception that proves the rule.  The movie was very well done.

I think the same thing can be said for 2001: A Space Odyssey, for comparison. Read and seen it both, both have their own charm. Even if the movie came first, both are excellent.

Reading a Tom Clancy novel is on my bucket list. Not exactly my particular style of military fiction, but close enough that I know I'll enjoy it.
The games are very interesting in many ways, and I loved pretty much all of them. Tom Clancy was one of the most badass storytellers out there. He deserves a gun salute at his funeral.

Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.
