Having both read and seen The Hunt for Red October, I'm not convinced the book is better.
However, both are rather excellent, so that's not saying a whole lot.
I think the same thing can be said for 2001: A Space Odyssey, for comparison. Read and seen it both, both have their own charm. Even if the movie came first, both are excellent.
Reading a Tom Clancy novel is on my bucket list. Not exactly my particular style of military fiction, but close enough that I know I'll enjoy it.
The games are very interesting in many ways, and I loved pretty much all of them. Tom Clancy was one of the most badass storytellers out there. He deserves a gun salute at his funeral.
