Are you a geek? Nerd? Both?
Yes I realize you could be geeks/nerds about many things. Think your primary interests, how your friends and colleagues would view you. How do you normally come across?

EDIT: linky, haha

Re: Are you a geek? Nerd? Both?
Wait, what? There's a difference?  :wtf:

Never before now have I witnessed someone attempt to make a disinction between the two with complete seriousness.

Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.

A nerd probably, though I am as close as possible to be geeky without being a geek.

both depending on the subject

Startrek Geek - started collecting models and again love absorbing facts for the sake of it

General Sci-Fi - geek/nerd as i enjoy reading, watching, collecting and creating things of a sci-fi nature

Re: Are you a geek? Nerd? Both?
I'm mostly a nerd. I love gathering data, but was never really interested in physical objects unless there's some point to them (and even then, I go with what works, not what's fashionable).
For example, you won't find an ST shirt in my closet, but I know a lot about the series. However, I've recently became a mild "fashion geek". :) That's mostly because I found out how much better I look if I don a waistcoat and a jacket to match, plus some good trousers and a fancy fedora, rather than going around in cammies. Having found a nice thrift store with a variety of foreign (mostly British) clothing, I bought some nice stuff (including a jacket with an 80 pound price tag still attached. They sold it for an equivalent of 5$). :)

Maybe?
I've been called both of those names equally as much as I've also been called "dork", too, and there's also "shut-in", "otaku", and "hipster". What are we supposed to think of those names, too?

Or maybe attempting to reach a formal definition of these is pretty pointless.  :doubt:

From what I've heard/read, Otaku's are the "top-tier" geeks. You know the ones, who just simply cannot live a single moment without whatever they're obsessed about.

You're a survival nerd, Nuke. Everything you do is centred around surviving when there's an extinction event. :p

I think I'm a little bit more of a nerd. I'm not enthusiastic, I don't like collecting stuff, and I have no obsession with the newest things in my realms of knowledge. However, I'm not a studious intellectual, nor am I achievement oriented either. I do like acquiring knowledge and look forward to new experiences, though. I also prefer reading a book to reading an e-book. When I still had a PDA, I tried the latter once and didn't like it as much as reading a proper book.

i guess you could say that. city dwellers like to surround themselves with illusions and dont really want to know how things work. basic things like meat processing (see how its made, watch hotdog episode) and agriculture disgust them. they dont want to know how much animal **** is in their food for example (i like to inform vegans who eat jello what they are actually eating).

They should really, really already know that when they decided to turn vegan. I mean, they'll lose their powers if they're caught!

I willingly admin computer servers, both for pay and for a 'hobby'(?).

Geek or nerd doesn't quite fit.

Masochist on the other hand...

Considering how vampire-inspired Goth culture tends to be, pretty sure they're nerdy.  Also, as someone on the autism spectrum who regularly hangs out with fellow autists, we're a bunch of pretty smart guys with social issues, so I don't see how we're going to avoid ending up nerds. :P
