Problem with post 3.7.0 pilot files
Hi,

I'm a new user to the Hard Light forums although I've been lurking here for much longer. I also played Freespace 1&2 when they were new and later tried Open Source version 3.6.9 in 2007-2008. I remember it working nicely except for one Red Alert bug in Derelict.

Several years pass, I notice that a new 3.7.0 version has been released. So I download FS2 from gog.com and do a fresh install (with every mediavp that exists). I hear that there is now a new pilot file system so I make a new pilot and then I proceed to play the following mods/campaigns:

- Silent Threat: Reborn
- JAD 1,2,3 and 2.21
- Deus ex Machina & Interlude
- Ridiculous
- Freespace 3: Search for Bosch
- Wings of Dawn
- Blue Planet: AoA and WiH

The game itself works nicely although I wonder why the Yarn's Adaptable HUD Build isn't included in the main version (it's so convenient to use with widescreen monitor). Red Alert bugs are also gone, but at one point I started to notice some very odd things happening with pilot statistics. Firstly I noticed that only small fraction of my kills were categorized by enemy ship types. At one point I had like 500 kills, but only about 20 of them were specified by their ship types. This definitely didn't happen with 3.6.9.

The Create pilot button is also broken. It behaves like Clone button at the moment. I created a new pilot for both Blue Planet and Wings of Dawn, because that was recommended, but I was very surprised to notice that these new pilots had the exact rank and kill statistics of my original pilot. And I was even more surprised to notice that shortly after this, my original pilot's rank reseted back to Ensign from Lieutenant commander (kills remained the same) when I was playing Blue Planet with my new Blue Planet pilot. The new pilots maintained their buggy rank. Some medals also mysteriously disappeared.

I have no idea why this is happening. None of these problems existed in 3.6.9. I remember creating multiple pilots and they all started from 0 kills and Ensign rank, working as intended.

I'm also not sure if this is the right place to post this. In a way, this is not a technical or installation issue, since I can complete all my campaigns just fine and the campaign progress saves seem to be working correctly. This odd pilot stats behaviour is really just a nuisance, but annoying nonetheless.

P.S BTW great work with the overall Freespace Open project! I think it's my favourite Open Source project that I follow. I'm amazed how people still contribute to development even after all these years.  :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I never got the triple Ace Award even though I passed 350 kills by far. So that award seems to be bugged.

Unfortunately, some bugs were not caught before 3.7.0 was released, and you seem to have hit a few of them.

These two issues you mentioned may need a closer look to see if they were caused by known & fixed bugs, or if they are new/unknown bugs.  Would you mind posting your pilot files (3 of them?) so we can have a look at them?

And yeah, this is the correct place to post about these issues / bugs :)

Re: Problem with post 3.7.0 pilot files
It's worth noting that only fighter and bomber kills count toward the Ace medals.  Racking up kills of any other ship class will not affect the total.

I attached a collection of my FS pilots in rar -format.

One of my pilots has over 600 kills. I don't think that I have killed at least 250 cruisers, transports, corvettes, freighters, destroyers etc.. It seems that the triple ace award is permanently blocked for me.

BTW I had a theory regarding the unspecified kills, although it's a bit far-fetched. It might be placebo effect, it might not be, but still I had this feeling that if I specifically looked my missions stats in each debriefing, those kills (that were specified by their ship types) had a higher chance of showing up in the overall kill list in the Barracks. Problem is that I very rarely look my post-mission stats, probably only 5-10 % of the time. Looking at how few kills end up being registered by ship types, there might be some correlation here. At least I think it's worth checking out.

Re: Problem with post 3.7.0 pilot files
since you have played a variety of mods some of the ship types will not show up if they are not in the present mod.  That is something that was true even with retail.  Within the mods you played with your pilot are FS1, FS2, Wings of Dawn and Blue planet ships which are unique to the mod.
Normal people believe that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it isn't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.
The difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers is:
Mechanical Engineers build weapons.  Civil Engineers build targets
An optimist sees the glass half full; the pessimist sees it half empty. An engineer sees that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
