Paul Mcgann Returns (to the Google Doodle) as the 8th Doctor!!
Well the BBC have released an minisode prequel to the 50th ann of Doctor who Night of the Doctor and features Paul McGann as the 8th doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We finally get to see what happened to the 8th doc on screen and it makes the 8th doctor big finish audios 100% canon due to some of the names he mentions in the ep. Even though its only 6 mins long, it proves that mcgann has still got it and easily leaps and bounds ahead of Eccelston, Tennant and Smith. It is sad in one respect that the tenure of the longest doctor has come to an offical on screen end, 8th doctor 1996 - 2013

Re: Paul Mcgann Returns as the 8th Doctor!!
Really starting to get psyched about this now.

I wouldn't say McGann leaps ahead of the other two, since they all play the Doctor in their own way, but it sure shows he's still got it. And I must admit, I do smirk at people saying 'This means Capaldi is the final Doctor', because considering the way technology works in Who, that's probably one of the easier things to 'wibbly wobbly timey wimey' away...

Having seen that episode though, it does make me regret that the massive portion of McGann's contribution to Who history is only in written or audio format.

I'm going to join this to the other Dr Who thread. Not cause I object to having two, but cause I want to point out I saw it first. :p

Is there no discussion of the 50th special?

You can discuss it here. Just use spoiler tags since there are probably quite a few who haven't seen it yet.

Regarding the 50th anniversary episode, I liked the actors performances most of the time. But this episode emphasized as well that Moffat really has to let go of the helm, he is pretty good writing single episodes, but then the overarching stories are a mess.

Meh. I enjoyed it immensely. Couldn't give a stuff about the Moffat hater's point of view.

I really liked the episode. It has a few problems in terms of having to serve two narrative needs at the same time (The need to wrap up a few plot threads from past seasons, as well as the need to set up the plot for the next ones), but for the most part, it handles the story and characters in it very well. Of course, it also helps that John Hurt is completely amazing, and that Tennant and Smith play wonderfully off of each other.

The 1/2 second flash of Capaldi's eyes suggests he is not going to be the kind of Doctor that dances around his console while he works.

Don't know about 'No Second Chances', more along the lines of 'Consider yourself lucky you got a first one....'.

I was hoping for a little more grim dark cause I love grim dark, but what they did was more true to what/who the doctor is. Indeed, the performance by John Hurt was fantastic.

Loved it! So much so, I watched the repeat on BBC 2 (or was it BBC 3?) yesterday and I plan to watch it again on BBC iPlayer later in the week!  :D

Re: Paul Mcgann Returns (to the Google Doodle) as the 8th Doctor!!
You can tell that Doctor Who is more inspired by Comics than Sci-Fi though, which is why it can be so divisive. One of people's pet hates of Marvel, for example, is the fact that they tend to rewrite history and give characters 'one-off' powers or knowledge that never gets used again. When you deal with a show which is about mucking around in the timeline and changing history and alternate Universes etc, that becomes even more tempting.

Spoiler:
I like the fact the Doctor now has a 'mission', to find Gallifrey, and it does sort of fit that Smith should be leaving at Christmas, his character has found a chance at the redemption the Doctor has been looking for over the last few regenerations, so a new Doctor for a new Situation sort of makes sense. Hopefully the Christmas episode will cover the Silence arc more completely, possibly even covering the destruction of the TARDIS, though that may be shrugged off as a 'Big Bang mk2 reset button' event, but I hope not.
