All I want to know is how gog.com got their hands on an HD copy of the classical Freespace sounstrack (as heard in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUxvZB4h5Pw ) And I wanted to know if it is possible to rip the classic music from the FS Port core files or anywhere else that might have it in HD? I know there are many threads like these but I couldn't find one that answers my question fully. I did find one thread that provided a link but the link was broken and the thread was made in 2008.

I gotta say that I prefer the Dan Wentz remastered version: https://soundcloud.com/daniel-wentz/freespace-mission3-chaser (approx 1:35 for the part heard in the trailer).

The latest version of fsport has all the remastered tracks in the VP files, specifically fsport-mediavps/mv_fsport_music.vp.  You want a VP extractor to get the .oggs out:

or

Or for more info:

First off, I just want to say thanks for linking me to the remastered versions, I'm going to have fun with these all night. I want the originals though ad I will extract the VPs. But I actually want the originals on mp3 because they're easier for me to play with in windows media player, any recommendations on going from ogg to mp3?

Any recommendations for a VP extractor for that matter.

Finally does anyone remember what happened to the HD rips of the classic songs, I could have sworn it existed at one point.

Anyway, thanks a bunch.

If you're on Windows, this is probably a good VP editor/extractor: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83920.0

As for .ogg to .mp3 you could try audacity? http://audacity.sourceforge.net/   Just be aware that since both mp3 & ogg are lossy you're going to lose data each time you convert between them.

And lastly I'm not sure about the HD rips of the classic songs.  Maybe someone else knows something about it.

Here's another page for ya.

Keep in mind that the .ogg files in mediavps are the most "HD" ones we have right now.

That's unfortunate because the links either crash quicktime or lead to a 404 error. But it's okay, I'm currently working on the VPs. Thanks a bunch guys, now I can have a project to keep me busy!  :) :)

And hopefully when I'm done I'll have an FS soundtrack to play with that's better than what you can get at ffshrine and khinsider.  :D

My last post still applies but it just occurred to me to look for the audio files in the game directory itself. The thing is, I can't remember how to locate the original WAV files. Does anyone know where the original audio is stored in the FS1 directory (C:\Games\Freespace\....)

I think it's in this VP: warble_fs1.vp

Actually, warble_fs1.vp just has the original low-quality files that were included with the original game. The files that you're looking for are here:

http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.58
"Your fighter is running out of oil.  Please check under the hood and add more if necessary"
--strings.tbl, entry 177

"Freespace is very tired.  It is shutting down to get some rest."
--strings.tbl, entry 178

Thank you for the link! You have provided me with some great quality samples and I've been playing with them for the past hour now. Not only that, but you basically just finished a years worth of searching. Once again, thanks.
