hmm... interesting

homeworld: fun
freespace 1/2: atmosphere is good
morrowind: uber-open-ended
starcraft: bad in many way but occasionally "fun" (well maybe a bit more than that...)
red alert 2: dorky, a kind of a light romp through war... lots of tank tops shots...
Emperor: Battle For Dune: sucky....
Earth 2150: plays well
Battlezone: fun and different
Sacrifice: The atmostphere was great and the game hard enough to be fun... sometimes actually gives you choices (unlike most rts games)
Empire Earth: err.... lots of units....
and others not significant enought to mention...

Except for heavy plasma artillery, MDM mortars, EMP mortars, homing rockets, spreadfire plasma, laser turrets, rocket turrets, the Boom Stick, the Volter, and the Gravgun (on air maps).

Oh wait. You weren't talking about MODs, were you? :D

Here is my list:

  • Battlezone - great merger of action and RTS genres; different, yet fun, cool weapons
  • Battlezone 2 - nice graphics; like its predecessor, this one had very innovative weapons
  • Dune 2 - the game that started the whole RTS genre
  • Command and Conquer - I spent as much time with this and RA as I did with Descent and FS; great units, story, movies, multiplayer, everything really
  • Descent 1/2 - these are the titles that really got me interested in gaming; good AI and great movement system
  • Descent 3 - great weapon balance and multiplayer modes
  • Deus Ex - nonlinear gameplay, detailed and immersive storyline
  • Doom - nothing needs to be said for this one ;)
  • Freespace 1/2 - very realistic and detailed storyline, nicely designed missions, powerful moddability
  • Jazz Jackrabbit 2 - just good old-fashioned fun :D
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - atmospheric single-player campaign, great weapon reports
  • Mission Critical - like DX and FS2, plotline is very immersive, detailed and realistic
  • Thief II: The Metal Age - very good stealth system; like BZ, different, but fun
  • Total Annihilation - great RTS with tons of units and strategy, fully 3D
  • Tribes 2 - probably the best multiplayer game I have seen (and yes, the frisbees rule; I can smash up others by the numbers with that thing :D)
  • Unreal - this game is worth it just for the incredible level designs, and its graphics and AI were quite superior for its time
  • Unreal Tournament - great AI compared to other games, awesome multiplayer, lots of mods out there

I have also seen some oter games that my brother plays a lot (Homeworld, Ground Control, etc.) but I have not really gotten a chance to try them out yet.

Let's see....

These are the ones i play most for the time being:

Freespace: I agree with all that is written by other users; great story is one of the main features.

Half-Life: Same as written by other users.

Noctis: Why havn't this one been mentioned before?
Great atmosphere, over 70,000,000,000,000+ stars and planets to propsect and explore, free mobility; free to dream, impressive use of fractal-seed-engine, most addicting freeware-game in years.

Orbiter: Innoventive true-nevtonian-physics-engine, great add-on capability, great graphics (for a freeware game), great atmosphere, having the ability to explore all planets of Sol in real-time.

Countless others: Tough I like many other games as well, they are to many to list; and those listed here are those I play  most for the time being.

Freespace: The fun level.

Empire Earth: The ability to command modern tanks.

Homeworld: The pure fun of it.

Freespace 2: The fun level, amazing graphics, kewl storyline, and MODability.

IL-2 Sturmovik: The gritty realism, and the incredible Mplayer and graphics.

Combat Flight Simulator 2: Uhhhh...MODability, I guess.

Star Trek: Armada: The simple coolness of watching the game play. The campaigns weren't too fun, but if I was forced to play a game other than those listed above, I'd pick this one.

I was hoping someone would mention this game. :D Although it actually wasn't fully 3D - the terrain graphics engine wasn't, although it used fully 3D heightmaps and 3D units. The actual look of the terrain was completely 2D, made to look 3D, with the underlying heightmap designed so that units would go uphill where it looked graphically like there was a hill.

Anyway, I'd have to give a big mention to Total Annihilation for the 3D units, and even more importantly, the command-queuing. You could queue up so many diverse command for a single unit or group that the possibilities were just mind-boggling. My favorite was how easy it made setting up patrol routes for construction kbots/planes, how they would salvage metal while patrolling, repair damaged units, etc. Also cool was how easy it was to have a battle group follow a very specific path to attack a target from a certain angle. Dang, I loved that game. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. I don't think so. As far as I know, there is no Dune 1. I don't know if Dune 2 was the first RTS game, but I think so and at least it was real good. :D

Ok.

DUNE 1 was an adventure game with a tad of strategy. But NOTHING resembling an RTS. Dune 2 is infact the one that pioneered and started the RTS games.
