The other thread seems to have been locked without explanation, but given that we need to figure out what the heck is going on here to solve a major stability problem, I'm gonna keep it going. Re: this thread for the backlog.

Several people have said that having the events editor window open may be a risk factor. Given that 100% of the time I've had FRED alone for a while with the events window open it's locked up, I'm gonna try leaving it open tonight without the events window open. If I don't get a crash that'll at least point in the direction of narrowing down the problem.

I assume a mod will PM me if they have some kind of problem with solving FRED bugs.

I can confirm that it freezes for me too when left open for a bunch of hours, never with an event window open though.

I wonder if it's just a memory leak (although obviously IANAC). Most of the stability issues associated with actually using FRED have been solved since the dark days of 3.6.10. If this isn't user-triggered - and it hasn't happened to me in eight straight hours of using FRED - it's something specifically associated with the program or the system being passive.
