I've decided it's high time I upgrade from my current 1680x1050 (with a locked pixel right in the middle) and splurge for the best monitor I can find.  However, searching online myself is not proving as easy as I expected.  I was thinking I'd like to try an IPS, but I'm worried that they are too slow for gaming.  I also wanted a 120hz and/or ultra low response time (1-2ms) but I've since discovered IPS can't do that no matter how much I'm willing to spend.  I'd rather improve the smoothness of my current 2ms/60hz monitor than get better color.  Anyone used IPS for gaming?  How bad is the stuttering/lag/ghosting?  Is the color difference really that great for casual/gaming use?  Viewing angle isn't really a concern at all on the desktop (but would be marvelous for a laptop).  Also my desk space restricts me to 22" display, maybe 23" with an ultra small bezel.  So far it seems pretty much all of the really high-quality stuff cones in 24" or larger.  I wouldn't want a screen that big anyway I don't think.

I don't know, if i were you i might skimp on the monitor and then wait for the Oculus Rift.

While I wouldn't go this route personally (I want a UP3214Q :D ), the number one monitor I see people praise when it comes to refresh rate and response time is the ASUS VG248QE.

120hz makes a bigger difference than IPS for games, and doubly so with a strobing backlight (Lightboost or the Samsung equivalent). It's a huge improvement in motion quality with games that can sustain 120fps. IPS displays have better viewing angles and don't dither in motion (which is quite noticeable on FS2 background nebulas) but the blacks are just as bad as any TN and worse than VA panels.

The Samsung 120hz line was probably the best of that type but you can't get them anymore (except on ebay). The best deals these days are on larger displays, various Korean 27" ones or the Seiki 4K TV, which does 1920x1080 at 120hz.

I have a samsung 120hz and I have to keep it on 60hz because if I don't, my video card won't switch from 2d to 3d rendering mode. Aka I'll get 10fps on any game.
I don't know if thats just a wierd glitch with my video card or if its because I have a dual monitor setup and having one in 60hz and one in 120hz just won't work or whatever. But I've had little fun with the whole 120hz business.  :sigh:

well i guess i'm just SOL anyway, since 24" is the smallest the good stuff comes in, which won't physically fit where i need it to.  i guess i could at least upgrade the size a little from 20 to 22 and the res to 1080, but that doesn't really seem worth it.

let me reiterate:  i do not have the space for a 24" monitor.  it's not a question of where the stand grips it, it's a simple question of size ratio.  unless that device can make the display physically smaller, it won't work.

If you want to get a full HD monitor that is REALLY fast in response times and highly recommendable in usability and colour range, then you want to get an Eizo Foris. If it isn't over your budget, that is.

Edit: Well you said you couldn't fit 24'' to where it is supposed to go, so that's that.

Without the ability to fit into a 24" space, your options are painfully limited on either TN 120 or IPS.

I'm really REALLY annoyed that IPS hasn't delivered a 120hz desktop display. It's been possible for a while now (since 2010) ranging from 15.4 netbook/laptop to 24", they just haven't evolved on the market. LG and Samsung have both premiered functional display units (including one LG that I want that virtually has non-existent display bezel).

If IPS and 120/240 were available, I'd say go for it. Since they're not, I do have to say that I've dealt with Samsung/LG IPS displays and they haven't been a problem in gaming for ghosting or the like. As with any, out-of-the box may require some mild to moderate adjustments for satisfaction, some units can do horribly out of the box but really shine when you fiddle with them. Same holds true for TN displays.

Course, the issue is compounded by the fact that there are different types of IPS, but find whatever is in your budget and size and look for as many reviews as you can, especially any that are properly done with applied calibration results as well.

For non-IPS, 120 is definitely much more fluid. Whether or not you can find a reasonable display out there under 24" is also questionable. 24" really is a sweet spot size when it comes to features AND resolutions, especially if you want better than 1680x1050, such as 1920x1080 or 1920x1200.

The Samsung S23A750D is a 23" 120hz and has pretty thin bezels, but is discontinued and hard to find now.

Some of the Korean 27" IPS can do 100-120hz, but it drives the electronics over spec and you have to get lucky to get one that does it without glitches. I recall there was a site selling ones that were verified up to 100hz (for a markup).
