I have recently rediscovered Freespace: The Great War, and recall being fascinated with the editor years ago, and would love to get back into it now, but I am hitting some snags trying to....  :banghead:
I remember being able to make missions in the editor, and then play them in the game, but the ones I make now only seem to create an FSM file in my Freespace directory that will not open in the game??
Also, whenever I save a mission it is giving me this error:

This mission contains mission disk content. Non mission disk users will not be able to use this mission.

Can someone, ANYONE please tell me what I am doing wrong here??  :hopping:
As well, could someone provide me detailed instructions on how to save a mission that can be played in the game?? :drevil:
If so, I would be endlessly grateful, although I realize that this is a very OLD game, my fingers are crossed here, and THANKS in advance!!

In order to be able to play self-created missions, you have to place them in <FS Directory>\data\missions.

The warning is one you can safely ignore.

And as a note pretty much everybody uses the FreeSpace 2 mission editor, which will let you do a lot more stuff and get you a lot more players for your content.

This means that you are running with Silent Threat installed, and the mission uses Silent Threat ships and/or weapons.  If you want to distribute the mission to other people, you will need to make sure they also have Silent Threat installed when they load your mission.

If you want to ensure that your mission is playable by anyone with FS1, whether they have Silent Threat or not, you will need to remove the new ships from the mission area, remove the new weapons from any ships in the area that might be carrying them, and remove the ships and weapons from the initial loadout dialogs.  If you think you removed all of them but you're still getting the message, then you can open the FSM in a text editor and do a text search.

I do have Silent Threat installed, but I am not clear how to distinguish which units are from Silent Threat, and which are standard units??
Please clarify further!!

Also, when I started saving my missions to the correct folder in Freespace, and I try to run Freespace from the editor, I am getting the attached error??
I am sure this is something that I am doing wrong, but I would greatly appreciate any comments!!

I have heard that the ability to run Freespace directly from the editor is flawed, and if that is the case, please inform me....

I strongly encourage you to get FreeSpace 2 and FreeSpace Open and only then start work in the mission editor. If you want to play around with the FS1 editor, cool, just be advised you're missing out.

They are the ships and weapons that Silent Threat has but standard FreeSpace does not.  Look here under the "New Ships and Weapons" heading.

Yes, others have experienced problems launching FreeSpace from within FRED -- especially if there are spaces in the path.

Did you try starting FreeSpace from the FreeSpace launcher?

I think that I can figure out WHAT to remove, but I am not sure HOW to remove items and ships from the editor....
I tried right clicking on the items in the drop-down menus, but it did nothing at all??  :banghead:
HOW do remove the items from the editor, if they are already in there PLEASE??
I hate to keep bothering about this, but it is driving me mad over here!!    :nono:

And yes, I have thought about opening Freespace from the desktop icon, but that does not seem to open the missions I created in the editor....
I could not figure out how to attach these file to the game itself to allow them to be opened, and experienced.
I was hoping that opening it directly from the editor was the way to actually play the missions you made, but it was not working out for me. :shaking:

You play missions you made by putting them in <Your FS Directory>\data\missions, then opening the game, going to the tech room, going to the mission simulator (I assume FS1 has all this, at least), going to single missions, and selecting your mission.

There's no need to get frustrated.  Relax, stop, and think about what you are doing.  Don't flail around when you get stuck.

To remove ships from the mission area (not the drop-down dialog) select them with the mouse and hit Delete.  To remove weapons from ships in the mission, edit the ship's weapons loadout from the ship dialog.  To remove both ships and weapons from the player's loadout options, edit the Team Loadout dialog.

There is a help document, called Fred.rtf, located somewhere in the game's installation.  I recommend that you read it before doing anything else with FRED.

Follow Battuta's directions, or consult the help document.  You need to launch the missions from within the in-game simulator.  You do not "attach" the missions; FreeSpace is not an email program.

To be honest though, maybe you shouldn't bother removing the extra ships. Most people still playing FS1 probably have Silent Threat after all. And the way most people will play any FS1 missions these days is using the port to FS2 anyway.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.
