Having problems with the new Win 7 64bit System.
I have copy and pasted the Freespace folder from my old XP system to the new Win 7 system.  The game was not placed into the games folder, but into the documents folder.  What can I do?  Do I need to install Freespace 2 again on this new system?  As I have seen from other threads here, 15 year old cd's may have errors. I'm lost compared to the XP system that I used to have.  Icons are different on the Win 7 system making it hard to tell what is what.  Again, this is what my brother is saying about his system to me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My brother is getting a lot of error messages and doesn't understand how the file icons are different from XP.  He is trying to use the new mediavps 2014 with the new updated Vassgo's Dirge campaign.

I don't think he can do that without altering the Vassago's Dirge mod.ini. If he doesn't want to do that, he should just the 3.6.12 MVPs.

And just for the record, we are not here to teach you how to teach your brother how to use Windows 7. That is something you will have to do on your own. In addition, if it is your brother having difficulties, why isn't he registered here and asking for these things himself? That would make things much faster (with the above caveat, of course).

Well, I'm the one that finds him all the mods, builds, etc. on this website.  He doesn't know how to do that.  He would prefer to have Windows XP than Win 7.  I will see if he wants to register here.

Good luck getting it running!  I don't recall there being that much difference between icons in XP and 7, but I pay more attention to folder names than to what they look like.  The whole "libraries" thing that look like folders has thrown me off at times, though.  He should be able to take the whole "FreeSpace2" folder from My Documents and drag it to the C: drive, or you can create a 'games" folder in the c: drive and drag the FreeSpace2 folder there.

On a side note, if you have the CDs, there is no harm in trying them if you already have them.  The person I was responding to did not have the discs, and was debating going to the effort of importing an old disc vs. buying and downloading from GOG.  I was speaking from personal experience with an old CD failing, and recommending to him to get it thru GOG.

Thank you so much deathspeed!  He was copying it right from a DVD to drive C: documents folder.  Right now its in that directory.  So just make a new folder for Drive C:/Games and then just paste his freespace folder into that directory?  So when he extracts campaigns and stuff, they will go directly to the right place then?

That's my understanding from other posts I have read on here, but to be honest I have never tried it myself.

If he uses Goober's installer at http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86614.0, it asks for the installation directory (i.e. c:/games/freespace2).  Same with extracting other downloaded mods - you can extract to the freespace2 folder, or to a different location then move that folder to freespace2.
