Help needed editing weapons

I'm a bit of a modding newbie, but I've been playing around trying to make a TBP Thirdspace incursion scenario in FRED.

What I'd really like to be able to do is edit the weapons used on the Thirdspace capital ships to give them a bit more range and power. As it is they're a bit too easily destroyed by longer range fire from a Warlock or Minbari Cruiser.

After some trial and error and searching this forum I've attempted to edit the tables in Zathras.vp, and using QuickVP I've successfully altered the ships.tbl file, changing the default weapons for example.

The problem is that my attempts to edit the weapons.tbl result in a crash and the following error message when I run FRED:

Can't open model file <>
kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObjectEx + 2 bytes
fs2_open_3_7_0.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0.exe! <no symbol>

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or maybe suggest an easier/better way of achieving what I want?

Never attempt to edit a table file in a VP and then put it back in the VP. Instead, extract the tables and place them in <yourmod>/data/tables. Make sure they still have the .tbl suffix, not .txt.
