Whilst tinged with tragedy for what followed, I feel there is a certain level of delicious historic irony in this...

Really, Nazis' antisemitism was just a convenient excuse to kill people they don't like. One of the higher ranked ones (can't remember which) even said something along the lines of "I decide who is Jewish". In fact, the whole racial purity idea as first defined by Hitler was hardly followed in the end. Remember, Japanese were made "honorary Aryans", and the "inferior races" mostly coincided with enemies of Germany at that time, or convenient scapegoats. This is just another example of how irrational this regime was.

It always felt clear to me that the ConCamps were just convenient ways to escapegoat an eugenics program to reduce surplus population. No one really gave a **** about the "purity programs". that was just part of the big lie.

Well, reduce surplus population, steal their belongings to support the war (indeed, many Jews were quite rich, so this played a part, too) and get rid of undesirables. The Soviets were at least honest about this. Having different ideas than the Party was simply a crime in itself during Stalin's time. Nazis felt like it would be improper to massacre people they don't like/need without a proper excuse, while Soviets had no such qualms... Even the eugenics program was a shaky concept, and most Nazis probably didn't actually care about it much.

I think it would come under 'human interest', in other words, yes, it's been known for a long time, but until I read that article I didn't know it had happened at all. So Olds or News, it's still something interesting to those that didn't know.

Oh sure it's an interesting fact of course, not questioning the creation of the thread or anything like that.
I was just curious as to how this kind of thing could realistically go unnoticed for so long, and how media tend to recycle these type of news from time to time.
