For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
For all -Computer Enthusiasts-

I'll soon build up a computer for my friend and here are the factors.

What: Only the computer can.
Budget: 18,000SEK (2619$, 1952 Euro) - (Preferably a little less if possible) (Prices probably could differ form country to country so please keep that in mind)
Usage: Gaming
Desires: Able to max out games graphically without FPS problems for a few years. Upgrade able to 4K UHD Gaming in the future.

So this is the build I have built together. What do you think? Tips on adding something or change?
ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 ATX
2TB WD Red 7200rpm 64MB
SSD 120GB Intel 530 Reseller
Intel Core i7 4790K 4GHz, 8MB
Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) CL10 1866MHz VENGEANCE LP
EVGA GeForce GTX 780SC ACX 6GB
Phanteks PH-TC14PE Blue
be quiet! Power Zone 850W Bronze Module
NZXT H440W Silent Ultra Black/Blue
ASUS DVD±RW DRW-24F1ST Black Retail

The webpage I buy from is in Swedish and so the prices are in SEK. But for the budget of 18,000SEK this build is at 16,950SEK

Re: For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
Seems about right.  Be sure you pick the right SSD/HDD ratio for your needs, though.  Here's my $1800 build as of last November:

NZXT Phantom 530 case
NZXT HALE90 1000W PSU
16GB G.Skill Ribjaws X DDR3 2400
ASUS Z87 Deluxe mobo
Intel Core i7 4770K CPU (OC'd a little bit to 4.0GHz)
Cooler Master 212 EVO CPU fan + a couple NZXT case fans
EVGA GTX 770 2GB
WD Blue 1TB 7200 RPM (268GB used) <- documents, pictures, videos, music
Samsung EVO 1TB SSD (273GB used) <- program files (including some games - I haven't gotten around to reinstalling all of them yet)
some ASUS BluRay drive

be quiet.. the only PSU brand I've ever had to fail after a few months of use. I guess I was just unlucky, but would anyway get a Corsair, or something.

For that kind of cash, I would get at least a 256 GB SSD, but that's just me. :)

i consider optical drives archaic technology that have no place in my rig. dirt cheap large capacity sd cards are all you need.

people who get thousand watt psus really arent paying very good attention to the state of technology. i guess they are ok for a 4ghz overclock rigs. but even a 4770k only uses 84w.

ive planned out an i7 (haswell) rig which will consume < 300w @ peak power. its also a mini itx build because i think that computer cases today are ridiculously large.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=25463305

its a low tdp build and should run cool as a cucumber. memory and psu might be hand me downs (so the ones in the list are just placeholders). i got two high quality psus, a 650w and a 750w, they still run quite well. i got extra sets of ddr3 1600 ripjaws in my parts pile, but i might instead go with 16gb if i save some money elsewhere. its going to be a couple months before i get my 'this state sucks anti-tax' check, and this build may change significantly before i actually buy anything. i need to check the tdp of some other video cards too, but i think that one is about in the neighborhood of what i want.

You're probably right, I could've gone with a smaller PSU.  I had originally planned to do some more OCing with liquid cooling and maybe get two video cards SLI, but I never got around to it.  Still might later on, but not soon.

If I ever manage to finally get a job, the first thing I'm doing is making one of these threads, so that you can all help me get something that isn't a goddamn decade-old Dell.

it my experience by the time 'later on' rolls around, my computer is two generations behind and i need a new one.

I've contemplated a new build and was wondering if it will be worth waiting for DDR4 to be released if you're throwing around that much cash...

Re: For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
Two decades of rig building has taught me one thing. It's not cost-efficient to buy components on the far right spectrum of performance. Why? Because cost vs performance does not scale linearly. You could probably save about 30% by going closer to end of mid-range performance components and performance would still not be far from the top performers.

Motherboard - Don't you think the Sabertooth is going way overboard? There are cheaper motherboards that surely fit your needs.
SSD - You really shouldn't get anything less than 256GB SSD these days. Particularly not with a budget as big as yours. You should be able to fit OS, apps and currently actively played games on a 256GB SSD. Use junction points to move game directories from/to SSD/HDD.
CPU & GPU: Too high a cost for too little performance gain. You should reconsider cheaper models, especially for CPU where performance difference is even less than GPU's.

Be smart, don't waste money even if you have it.

Re: For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
I agree with Fury - except for in very particular cases, high-midrange components are much more cost-effective. In this case, a decent Z97 board and an i5 4690k will be the best price/performance combo especially for gaming. You'll gain 5-10% fps (if you're lucky) for a nearly 50% increase in cost getting the i7.

Man I really wish I could build a new box right now.

if i waited for stuff to come out i would end up spending all my money on booze and prostitutes and wouldnt have any left for computer stuff. i was kinda hooping 14nm stuff would be out by now, but i guess im sticking with 22nm because intel is slow at tocking this year. i get money mid october and it will be gone before end of october so i get whats out at the time.

I gotta admit this is my thinking.  I think right now still even with DDR4 on the eve of introduction its going to add painful cost until DDR3 is phased out (it's damn cheap right now) and short of a miracle I think it will take a good 3 years to get back on the ~$2000 gaming rig consideration.

Can't argue against saving money for booze and hookers.  Well booze mostly... but it is the catalyst that leads...

Re: For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
DDR4 is dead and it hasn't even made it to retail proper. DDR4 is too little too late and yet again has sacrificed latency to provide more bandwidth.

It seems the future will be stacked DRAM on CPU/GPU dies. The only disadvantage to on-die stacked DRAM is that you can no longer upgrade RAM separately. Stacked DRAM trumps DRAM in DIMM slots in latency, bandwidth and should also be able to rival DIMM slots in capacity.

I for one am looking forward to AMD APU's with stacked DRAM, but NVIDIA's next-gen GPU arch called Volta will most likely be the first product to have stacked DRAM.

When/if DDR4 is released, it will come at an exorbitant cost for quite a while. I wouldn't hold out for it.

Re: For all -Computer Enthusiasts- -Gaming Rig
memory tech has kind of stagnated somewhat. ive ended up using ddr3 1600 for 3 builds now. i think we are getting to the point where in order to go faster, we need to eliminate the physical distance between the ram and the cpu.

DDR4 is dead and it hasn't even made it to retail proper. DDR4 is too little too late and yet again has sacrificed latency to provide more bandwidth.

thats the system on a chip configuration. you solder the ram module on top of the cpu/gpu modlue. this config is mostly used in low power low performance embedded machines (raspberry pi has one). when you start doing this to high power, high performance cpus, heat transfer becomes an issue, but i think its a solvable problem. you might see an 8gb+ dram module on top of the cpu. it would be factory installed, so no upgrading it without upgrading your cpu. this also simplifies your mobo a lot. so less board area to support that cpu == less cost.

frankly i dont know why we still use the backplane configuration. i think having a separate gpu socket and using the on board video connectors that all mobos have these days. get rid of the backplane all together. lower speed devices could be installed into mini-pcix slots (these seem to be common on mini-itx boards). then the case need not be more higher than the cpu cooler. you could have server style wind tunnel cases that are still pretty low profile with good heat dumping characteristics.

then comes the question why do we even need the damn sockets and connectors. just solder everything to the board and sell it as a high performance single board computer. it adds a lot of bulk and cost that most people just dont need.
