So, apparently we thought that our local group of galaxies was a small part of a supercluster of galaxies, dominated by the Virgo cluster, which is in excess of 100 million light-years across. Now it seams that this was but a small piece of a massive supercluster of galaxies which scientists have identified by tracking the motions of galaxies and clusters to determine what is influencing their motion and to find any pattern in them. This result is the Laniakea supercluster which is about 520 million light-years wide. In fact, this may again be just a small portion of an even yet larger complex, which scientists have yet to discover.
