No. Thats possible but more complicated and less efficient. It has so far been tested on one non geforce: the voodoo 3, one of the most tempremental 3D cards there is. And it works on that so thats a good sign. If this solution fits all then we can leave it at that.
You see the problem developing for the PC is that there are so many different combinations: what OS, what graphics card, other hardware, other software that might interfere.
If this comunity is unwilling to test new code to destruction then bugs will end up in the CVS. Better they are found in the present when developers are focused on that task rather than later when you want to be playing with the newest cool feature rather than seeing error messages and the developer has moved on.
This is a very simple test within a well defined area. Not all testing will be so nice and simple. Only a few people can program but everyone can test.
So if you have any non geforce or old geforce graphics cards then get testing!
