So close, but so far... error message on running Media 3.6.12
Hello all,
After putting it off for some years (mostly due to not having a PC) I’ve finally got around to playing FS2 again, and naturally I’d like to bring it “up to speed” with regards to how it looks.

It’s taken a while to get to where I am, and I’m not a modder in the slightest so kinda proud of myself for making it this far!

Firstly, the FS2 Open Launcher 5.5g didn’t work for me, but the wxLauncher seems to be fine.
I tried a few mods, and none worked… finally figured out that the mod I’m after (The original FS2 campaign with new graphics is “MediaVOs 3.6.12” I believe. However, I’ve only managed to get it running once; each time I run it now I get the same error message that I get with all of the other mods. The only time it’s ran I managed to look into the tech room, and the ships I looked at were all very new and shiny, rather than 1999 retro style (I feel terrible calling stuff form 1999 retro, but that’s time for you I guess. ^_^ )

Although I still have my FS2 CD (And FS1 for that matter) this digital copy is actually from GoG.

I’ve read through the FAQ thread… and all of the following files are in the root FreeSpace 2 folder.
root_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp

Multi-mission-pack.vp AND multi-voice-pack.vp are there, but  FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp is NOT there.

This is the error message I get when I try to enter the campaign:
Quote
ERANGE: String error. Please Report.
Trying to put into 127 byte buffer:
yellow_glow2_small-neb.dds
KERNELBASE.dll! WaitForSingleObjectEx + 211 bytes
KERNELBASE.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>

If I try to run MediaVPs2014 I get this:

Quote
mv_effects-sdf.tbm(line 16):
Error: Required token = [#END] or [$Species_Name:], found [$Countermeasure Type:   Type One] .

ntdll.dll! NtWaitForSingleObject + 12 bytes
KERNELBASE.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_7_0_SSE.exe! <no symbol>

Can anyone assist please?

PC details if needed:
i54690k
8mb DDR5 2133mhz
3gb R8 280
Win 8.1 64bit
Everything is on a 250gb SSD.
Erm... can't think of anything else that's important really, but happy to provide any more required info

I've got a couple of educated guesses regarding the issues.

1) I think you've installed FSO into a long directory path, maybe under Program Files?  This can be resolved by moving FSO into a shorter path (like c:\games\freespace2) OR (and this is probably preferred now) using the 3.7.2RC5 FSO executable.

2) This is caused by using 3.7.0 with the mediavps_2014.  You need to use 3.7.2RC5 with the mediavps_2014.

The simplest way to install FSO and mods is using the installer (which needs Java 1.5 or later installed).  Or you can manually download 3.7.2RC5 here.

If that doesn't work, please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

SOLVED. Thanks for your help!

OK the problem WAS the directory path... it was in a long sub directory (I'd shoved all games into the Steam Directory, even non-steam ones, to try to keep files clean on the PC), but I've now moved it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2 and it's worked. Someone else had a similar problem and that was the solution, so I copied and pasted it and it worked.

As for your second point; I did get the installer from fsoinstaller.com but it's given me 3.6.12... I'll try 3.7.2... is there any major differences between the two versions?

Must say that the graphics are stunningly improved over the original. Managed to get the 360 pad working with it too and got most of the vital commands binded nicely.

Re: So close, but so far... error message on running Media 3.6.12
MediaVPs 3.6.12 are pretty outdated now, use the MediaVPs 2014 if you want the best graphics the FSU team can give us. As for the differences between 3.6.12 and 3.7.2 executable there are too many to count, but needless to mention most of the newer mods won't run on obsolete executables(Aside from the Freespace Port, that thing even runs retail).
