WoD faction background blurbs
I'll be posting bits of faction background information in this topic over time. Not exactly my forte but I'll give it a shot.

First up the Delest Dynasty:

Founded by settlers of a mixed Russian, Chinese and Japanese descent, who left Sol shortly after the fall of the UEU.

With terraforming technology still in its infancy, the pioneers decided to keep travelling until a suitable habitable planet was found. Eventually they settled in the Ihefulian system, a single planet system with a red dwarf star. But while Ihefulian prime was habitable, the environment was harsh, the air hard to breath and the climate erratic. Thus the settlers started applying heavy genetic modifications on themselves from DNA of local wildlife, to better adapt to their new living environment.

Over time, House Delest came into power on Ihefulian and the Delest Dynasty as a 'state' came into being. This vast, wealthy and powerful family quickly expanded its power by building artificial human growing facilities. Capable of growing a new artificial human being from infancy to maturity in the span of a mere two years. With a legion of these new artificial, genetically programmed to be loyal, humans, the Delest's set out to colonize new worlds and expand their power base ever more.

Because the DD has been expanding away from the direction of Sol, first contact between the Delest Dynasty and the other factions came late, and was a total suprise for the rest of humanity.

Present day
The Delest Dynasty has just come out of a relatively bloodless succession war, following the death of the previous Emperor Vladimir Yama Delest. Yu Ki Kohakuren Delest came out the victor of this war, using great cunning and careful political maneuvering. She inherits an Empire that has been mired in low level corruption, internal power struggles and a space navy that has been largly neglected by the previous Emperor.
With a keen eye for talent and with a large powerbase, Empress Kohakuren has already started large reforms which have set the Delest Dynasty back on the road for power.

Other noteworthy subfactions

Yonsakuren-Clan
Amongst the first wave of Delest colonists, this clan settled on Uuni II. On which they discovered an animal with an unique set of traits, the most important one being a unique, incredibly dense muscle structure. They dubbed this six legged, bear like animal, the Sursaa and were quick to research how to incoorperate it's genetic traits into their own.
The result is super human strength, but without the bulk that would otherwise slow a person down. On the flipside, it also makes the person more aggressive and it causes the body to release epinephrine at a much higher and frequent rate than is normal. For the average Yonsakurener, even the mere prospect of a potential fight gives them an adrenaline rush equal to a bungee jump.

The Yonsakuren-Clan quickly rose to become the single best shock troops of the Delest Dynasty and the vanguard of the elite fleet elements.

Relation to other factions
Sol Union: Starlance distance wise, the furthest away. Mostly neutral due to lack of many connecting borders.
New Britannia: Frequently at war, great amount of distrust and dislike due to different views on gene manipulation and cloning.
United Guilds of Commerce: Very limited trade agreement, very reluctant to expand on the relation to avoid giving an outside faction any influence within DD space.

View on the League StarForces

The Delest contribution toward the LSF is not done out of an active desire to put up a united Terran front against the invading Cyrvans. The CSA fleet is still a few ways off from DD space and as far as House Delest is concerned, they don't mind seeing the other factions wear themselves out against this alien invasion. The main motivator to be a part of the LSF, is the fear that the other three factions actively bond together in the face of a common enemy and start collaborating both technologically and economically, and that the DD might to be left out from this.

Fleet doctrine
Delest Defense favors heavy weaponry over mobility and speed. Contradicting to this is, that they have a fondness for hit and run tactics. These strikes more often come down to "Destroy everything, and then abandon the location after."

For soemthing that is not your forte, this is really good.

Are those artificial Humans fully sentient or more like biologial robots?
If sentient, do they have all rights of "natural Humans" or are the second class citizens or slaves or somesuch?

Re: WoD faction background blurbs
Fully sentient, it's pretty hard to discern between a normal and an artificial human. In most respects, they are mostly just normal people, only born from a vat. While they aren't second class citizens per se, it is very rare for an artificial human to climb the social ladder to a position of actual power. Though this can be mostly attributed to them being genetically 'programmed' to not be very ambitious. Not to say that there isn't any discrimination, just that discrimination isn't the primary reason for the lack of artificials in high places.

Re: WoD faction background blurbs
New Britannia

Initially started out as an alliance between four great houses, to put up an united front against the ever expanding Sol Union. These well developed and influential border worlds had already established a strong cultural identity, and were afraid they would lose much of their independence if they were to be integrated into the Sol Union.

During the first war with the Sol Union, a strong leader from the Duchy of Arc Victoria emerged. This leader, Jaden Arc Victoria, managed to lead the alliance to a narrow victory against overwhelming odds. After settling a truce with Sol Force, he turned this alliance between unaligned borders worlds into a new power bloc and made himself into its monarch. Thus New Britannia was born, with Arc Victoria as its new royal house.

Present day
New Britannia is the second largest of all the factions, with a population roughly 40% percent smaller than that of Sol Union. Its current monarch is 15 year old Amalia Arc Victoria, who ascended the throne after the former King and Queen died in an unfortunate subspace accident. (This is still a hot topic for debate; Was it an actual accident? Or an assassination through sabotage?) A girl with a lot of spunk, flair for dramatics and giving speeches, she has little issue filling the big shoes her parents left behind.

Its navy, the Commonwealth Royal Fleet (CRF) is highly respected and feared even amongst the other factions. The royal admirals are renowned for their honor and skill and draw from a pool of very motivated officers. Unfortunately the CRF is hampered by New Britannia's wavering economy, and frequently finds itself forced into making uncomfortable compromises in regards with material and equipment. It also tends to lag behind in research and development. But none of this can ever temper the high spirits of the Knights of the CRF.

Other noteworthy sub factions
New Britannia is divided in four major houses.
- Duchy of Arc Victoria: While only third in terms of systems and population controlled, it wields the most power and has the most powerful fleet out of all the houses. All but two of the monarchs ruling New Britannia have come from Arc Victoria.

- Dukedom of Estoria: Has possession of the most systems and largest population but has a low influence in state affairs relative to its actual size.

- Exarchate of Pegasus: The smallest of the houses, but all of its planets are well developed core worlds. Pegasus is capable of exercising significant influence and has always actively vied for more. The only house to deliver a monarch other than Arc Victoria.

- Governorate of Sidonirad: Very little actual power, most of its systems are poorly developed border systems. While still counted as one of the four major houses, it is mostly ignored when one accounts for might and influence, despite its not insignificant population size.

- The Church: A lot of Britannians are pious and hold strong moral believes (especially when it comes to genetic human alterations), and the church has thrived on it. Strongly promoting the image that the ideal Britannian is that of a virtuous knight. They have their own military arm, Knight Templars, that recruits only the most devout and capable.

Relation to other factions
Sol Union: Eternal rival, though relations recently have mostly been peaceful because of the Sol Union's passivity and the CRF's focus on the Delest Dynasty
United Guilds of Commerce: Holds a lot of monetary debt, causing frequent political conflict that occasionally amounts into low key military conflict. Both sides are sure to never escalate this conflict though. The UGC would ruin Britannia financially, while the CRF would devastate the UGCR militarily. A mutually assured destruction.
Delest Dynasty: Very strong dislike, frequently at war. Irreconcilable moral views.

View on the League StarForces
New Britannia is an active supporter of the League Starforces, and has a contributed a fair amount of political effort and military equipment and supplies towards it. The CRF, however, has issues finding suitable voluntary military personnel to contribute, due to the reluctance of having to work together with people from the DD.

Fleet doctrine
The Commonwealth Royal Fleet does not hold itself to a single fleet doctrine and strive to be as flexible as possible, and adapt as the situation requires. While the fleet itself has a lot of stiff traditions and military protocol, it is very self aware of it and prides itself on not letting itself get mired down by that

Very nice. NuWoD offers a brand new slate for lore and it's always fun to read about the universe.

Just knowing more about the major Terran factions alone is going to be interesting with all their differences.

Re: WoD faction background blurbs
Sol Union

The Sol Union was birthed from the ashes of the United Earth Union. After overthrowing the fascist government, the pro-democracy forces quickly purged the old Earth-centric attitudes and replaced them with ideals of unity and expansion.

This led to a rapid increase in size, population and development for the Union. By the numbers, the Union is second to none, both economically and militarily. But a government of this large size produces inefficency in nearly every area. Every change in policy, foreign affairs and law, is subject to extensive lobbying and multiple layers of bureaucracy. Once the Union starts on a course however, there is little anyone can do to stop it. This is seen as both a pro and a con by the other Terran governments.

Its current democratic elected president is Hugo Clarkson, a martian currently serving his second term in office. His time has been mostly uneventful but has come with a lot of stability.

Other noteworthy subfactions
Silva research
A massive research and development complex in the Silva system, responsible for developing the majority of the weapons and defensive system that Sol Force uses.

Harcon mercenaries
While not really a unified faction per se, the Harcon system is home to the majority of the 'official' mercenaries. Harcon is deep within Sol Union space, but the Harcon mercenaries offer their services to whoever might need it... whoever makes the best offer. There is little in the way of loyalty toward Sol.

Relation to other factions
United Guilds of Commerce: Good relation, interests frequently align, have cooperated on major projects before.
Delest Dynasty: The Sol Union knows relatively little about the DD's culture, motives and strength, and thus views them with a certain amount of distrust.
New Britannia: Holds a certain amount of respect for them, but is fully aware that this recent peaceful period might be a fleeting thing. Sol Union has tried to improve relations as best as possible and hopes the joint LSF effort will help in this regard.

View on the League StarForces
The LSF was SF's initiative, and as such, SF is its greatest contributor. Providing it with the bulk of its human and material resources. Sol Union has great hopes for the LSF, hoping it will improve relations between the Terran factions, and bring more peace and stability amongst them in the face of the common foe.

Fleet doctrine
Sol Force favors speed and mobility on both the tactical and strategic theater. Since Sol Union is vast, SF has a lot of systems to cover, therefore it is vital that it is capable of being able to deploy fleet reinforcements swiftly to where they are needed.

Re: WoD faction background blurbs
United Guilds of Commerce

The United Guilds of Commerce began as a collection of mega-corporations that felt preyed upon by the "evil tyranny" of the Sol Union. Rapid expansion and development had its costs to the Union, and the plan to keep the economic machine going was to collect royalties and leases on colonial development. Some corporations cried foul over the controls being imposed on them. "If the Union wanted rapid expansion, why burden these charitable exploration companies with taxes and regulations?"

The guild was formed between a group of corporations and they decided to take matters into their own hands. One of their first acts was to stop all tax money from flowing to the Sol Union. The money instead went to the formation of a United Guilds of Commerce Regular force to guard their planets from any undue influence. The UGC saw themselves as a totally independent body, while the Sol Union had a different picture of the situation. Unwilling to start military action against its own people at this point in time, the Union allowed the UGC to form its own defense force, but still considered all of the UGC's planets Sol Union property and added any potentially left over revenue to a debt account. The UGC tried to buy out their claimed planets from the Sol Union by sending a payment for 1 credit per planet. The transaction still has not been accepted by the Union.

Over the years the UGC has continued to go about their business in their own way, and both the Sol Union and the UGC now see each other as mostly independent entities. Trade barriers are very low and its a simple matter to traverse through the border Starlances. Some fringe Union politicians still aim to see the UGC systems properly reunified with the rest of the Union, by force if necessary. But the UGC has its own army of lobbyists to ensure that the Union stays friendly.

Its current leader is CEO Ivanov Rubinsky, who has expanded the UGC's influence significantly over the recent years, starting up several major projects and increasing the UGC's military might. His bold but risky decisions have paid off handsomely for the UGC. For example, during the recent Delest Dynasty's internal strife, he had the United Guilds of Commerce Regulars invade the Ielyai system under the pretense of 'securing UGC assets during a politically unstable time'. Bolstered by several mercenary contracts, the Regulars took the system with relative ease. Oddly enough, the Starlance leading into the system was unguarded. (A few bribes to people in the right places can perform miracles.)

It is speculated that the UGC has as much wealth as Sol Union and New Britannia combined, while the space it controls is roughly 10% of those factions. New Britannia's government especially has a lot of debt to the UGC.

Other noteworthy subfactions
The Hydra Foundation

The UGC's main arms producer, responsible for designing and constructing the UGCR's capital ships and fighters. Also produces SF fighters under license.

Relation to other factions
Sol Union: Good relation, Sol Union is a massive export market for the UGC.
Delest Dynasty: The UGC has been trying to get a foothold into the DD for a long while now but has only had very minor success. This is seen as constant attempt of infringing on DD sovereignty by the DD and has strained relations. The recent annexation of the Chimera system has put the two faction nearly at a state of war.
New Britannia: The UGC tries to siphon as much wealth out of the CRF without putting them into a straight financial crisis... and has had great success doing so. Exploiting their honorable and moralistic attitude with all the cunning and deviousness befitting of a capitalist nation.

View on the League StarForces
While somewhat fearful that it could prove a potential endless money sink, the UGC views the creation of the LSF as a prime opportunity to invest into new technologies with the collaboration of SF. Using the LSF as a test bed for new tech that can later be used as export products. Of course, while holding up the public pretense of contributing to the fight against the common enemy.

Fleet doctrine
The UGCR has a small but well trained fleet of regulars and adds to its strength with mercenary contracts as the need arises. As such, the UGCR usually only dictates a general strategic goal, and then lets the mercenary forces work out the tactical aspect of it. Then supports those tactics with its regular units.

I'm a bit unsure of how the UGC is governed. Do they have a kind of council made up of the heads of the corporations?
If so, how is it decided which corporations sit on the council?
Does the general population have any say in government business at all?

Right so, the UGC is basically an Oligarchy, with (as you said) a council that is made up of the heads of corporations. The bigger and more succesful the corporation, the more say they have in the council. There is a certain amount of transparancy in council decisions though, like for example, the council is voting on a bill about limiting how many taco's a 17 year old girl could buy in a month. Rimtech votes yes on this bill, Mil-Agro votes no and Neuropa abstains, (I'll draw the waifu of the first person who gets this reference) these results are known to everyone. So in effect the people can 'vote with their wallets' to an extend, buy more or less products of a corporation they agree with or not.
But outside of that, the people have very little say in government business. It's just that most people in the UGC tend to be pretty content since they are living happy rich lives. One of the UGC laws is that wealth always has to trinkle down, if a corporation is doing great, its employees must benefit from this. It's a simple measure to keep the people content while they live in a state in which they effectively have no say in anything.

New Brittania is said to have 4 main houses but 5 factions are mentioned, is it because the church is not a house per se?
Yes, the church is a major sub faction but not a house.

Just a quick question for the forum game RP-content: Are both of these the official heraldy of New Britannia? or is one of them just the heraldy of the king/queen?
"As you sought to steal a kingdom for yourself, so must you do again, a thousand times over. For a theft, a true theft, must be practiced to be earned." - The terms of Nyrissa's curse, Pathfinder: Kingmaker

"I am Curiosity, and I've always wondered what would become of you, here at the end of the world." - The Guide/The Curious Other, Othercide

"When you work with water, you have to know and respect it. When you labour to subdue it, you have to understand that one day it may rise up and turn all your labours into nothing. For what is water, which seeks to make all things level, which has no taste or colour of its own, but a liquid form of Nothing?" - Graham Swift, Waterland
