Unable to Disable Text to Speech
Text to speech is currently activating in briefings and and in-game where there is no available voice acting. It is also activating the in the tech room.
I have nothing checked under "Use simulated speech in" in my launcher, but still text to speech activates. In options, disabling "briefing voice" or lowering the voice volume has no effect.

Can someone help me resolve this problem?

I've attached my fs2_open.log, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly.

Re: Unable to Disable Text to Speech
Have you tried turning all the "use simulated speech in" options on, hitting "play", quitting FSO, then turning them all back off and hitting "play" again?

Re: Unable to Disable Text to Speech
Try running wxLauncher as an administrator. If that doesn't work, you may need to do some regedit work.

I ran wxLauncher as an administrator and tried enabling and disabling "use simulated speech" but it gave the same result.

  • Open regedit (Windows-R, enter "regedit", press return)
    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\
You should have a key named "Volition" there.
  • Right-click on it, and select "Permissions".
The "Group or user names" field may be blank; if it is, click "Add".
In the dialogue that now pops up, Enter "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" into the "Enter the object names" field.
Click OK. The dialogue should now be populated.
  • Mark the line that says "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES", and make sure that in the box with the permissions settings, "Full control" is set to "allow".
  • Go to the FreeSpace2 subkey under the Volition entry. Check permissions as above, and if necessary, fix as above.

Re: Unable to Disable Text to Speech
After selecting "Permissions", the "Group or user names" fields were already populated with several names. Of the 4, only "RESTRICTED" had "Read"  checked. The other names present had both "Read" and  "Full Control" checked.
The FreeSpace2 subkey and the following Network and Sound subkeys had the same names and same boxes ticked.

Should I attempt to add the "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" object and ticking "Full Control"?

If you didn't already have "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES", then yes, you should add it.

Re: Unable to Disable Text to Speech

When I click "Add...", the only field to type in is labeled "Enter the object names to select".
After typing "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" in this field and clicking OK, I am given a notice that the object could not be found.
Clicking OK in the window "Name Not Found" only opens the window again.

After typing
Code: [Select]
all application packages
then hit "check name", so it can fill in the machine name etc etc for you.

Re: Unable to Disable Text to Speech
If someone who is knowledgeable with the Windows registry etc could take a look at the following thread, I think you can find a solution there:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17761826/assigning-folder-permissions-to-all-application-packages-group

I'm just not sure exactly what steps Qubes should take for his specific situation.

None of that seems to be relevant to Windows 7; at this point, it would be easier to simply edit the registry entries related to speech by hand.

Qubes, under your Freespace 2 registry entry, you should see a series of keys starting with "Speech". Most of them are toggles; make sure these keys are set to 0:

That's because Windows 7 doesn't have the "ALL_APPLICATION_PACKAGES" user group; I thought the post I linked had in it a way to add this group to Win 7; apparently, I read wrong.  :nervous:  My apologies.
