Hi...

this has nothing to do with user IP banning on this forum or anything, but i want to know if it's possible (i'm sure it is) to get a program that will work with a browser (IE 5.0+ preferably) and will not allow the viewer to enter certain websites (either by banning the domain or the IP)

Could i do that?

Thanks

Just look for any program that advertises itself as a "Parental Filter" or something along those lines.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

yeah , but she goes on all these forums (those are what i want to block)... like for movies and such (Lord of the Rings forums, etc.) and gives out her name, age, and other information!  My mom doesn't want her to, but she keeps going to these sites!

There's only like 3 of them... it's got to be posible to just have some program run in the background that alerts and blocks that IP/domain!

My little brother used to stay on the computer 24/7 going to a "neopets" website and would never get off.  I created a simple VB program that would redirect any neopets site visits to the 404 error page you get when the website can't be found :)   It was really funny, but sadly my computer crashed and I lost the program.  But he still hasn't found out that the "neopets" webserver is "no longer down".

Dude! Make a program like that, except add a "block list" thing, and it'll be REALLY effective. I for one would download it
For example, the kid who find that he's been blocked by Cybersitter or whatever will simply mosey on over to Peacefire (http://www.peacefire.org/) and download the hack. If he gets a 404 he'll assume it's down.

See, this is why you go for a cable modem. My ****ty DSL service only, er, services one or two phone lines in the house, so the cable to the computer runs to a modem partway across the house. Whenever my sisters take a few hours too many shopping for clothes, I just unplug it, and they're too dense to figure out what's going on.:D

Stealth: Visit the sites, and look up the titles. Get NoPops- free program, it has a function that allows you to block specific page titles as junk. They just won't open, and unless your sister's unusually computer-literate for her age, she'll never figure it out.

...Like the Recycle Bin?

Better yet, don't delete the whole thing, just some vital data file that makes it work, instead of crash and burn. Most computers are unstable enough that nobody will be the wiser.

Come to think of it, it's kinda disturbing that I know how to do all this.

I suggest that you spend the time explaining to your mom why sensoring her childeren is bad fror their development and deprives them of the vital learning experiences that they need to become well rounded open minded individuals with a balanced view of the world. Teaching them that words/behaviour seen are taboo and not to be repeated is a much better thing to do.

What exactley is this "conent" that she doesn't want her seeing?

Failing that.

If you want to block her out of a select few sites then just stick their domains/ip addresses in your hosts directory: c:\windows\hosts for windows.
