Well Pegasus said it would be good if the map could show which planet was selected. Well check this out: Map

So now i've done that i want to know how you want to display the info? See the poll above.

Hey, that targetting thing looks really cool! Great stuff! I have three more suggestions for you to choose:
  • Keep it the way it is.
  • Instead of lines, have a targetting reticle around the selected system (like square brackets, but just the corners).
  • Or make the system icon sphere thingy change colour when selected.

Either of these would be great.

i think i'll keep the targeting thing the way it is. I tried originaly to use a reticle but it looked rather ugly however i did it. Plus (i dont know if you looked at the code or if you understood it) the current targeter is made of 2 layers with just the back ground colour. This means it has a negligable effect on loading time which is important with the map as a large image.

Indeed.

Your map is cool.

That looks very good Riven... very nice, and professional looking too!

Just a suggestion, i'm not complaining, just suggesting:

Have you ever thought about doing this in Flash?
The size will be about the same (filesize)(possibly less)... and the 'crosshairs' are MUCH easier to do, and you can do special effects, like for example when you hover over a system a window pops down from beneath it giving some of the statistics, etc. of it

i'll see if i can make a quick demo... possibly tomorrow,
but think about it in the meantime

a demo! :)
and it's only 300 and something bytes... you don't get better than that :D

EDIT:  Wrong smilie and wrong URL :D

EDIT2:  By adding another 10 or 20 bytes perhaps you can disable the mouse icon, so it'll just be the crosshairs

EDIT3:  In "Edit2" i said "perhaps you can disable the mouse icon"... what i meant to say is you CAN disable it... it's really easy, like 2 seconds... the 'perhaps' was supposed to go with the '10 or 20 bytes' :)

i did consider flash but as much as this is a useful project for the community i also was trying to learn about how to use layers in dreamweaver. Also i dont think i want the targeting lines to follow the mouse becuse they are just being used as an easy way to locate the current system. Nice bit of flash work you did though:nod: . I am not hugely experienced in action script but could figure most things that i would need out. If you want an eg. of my flash work then check out the GCA site.

nice work on that navigation on GCA Riven!  That logo at the bottom that has the 'ripples' in it... did you do that in another program?  how did you do that?  it's possible to do something like that in Flash, but it's pretty complicated, and i don't think you did that particular one in Flash.

Even though you don't want the crosshairs to follow the mouse, it's still cool to have when you click a system all the information pops up about it, and it's highlighted, or starts rotating or something :D  (i guess that could be done in javascipt, but Flash 0wns javascript!!! :) )

nonetheless, that GCA site looks really neat!  good work!

the nav bar on the GCA site is mine but Zarax did the ripple pool. Its a java applete that he got off the web.

i thought it was a Java applet.  Flash is based on Java anyway

yours is bigger, but i set flash to fit to the screen... it's easy to make it the same size as yours...

and the only reason you can click one then not another is because i only did two... if you do the whole thing in flash then once you click one you can click on another easily...

*sigh*

EDIT:  My mistake... i said "Java" instead of "Javascript"... but anything you can do in Javascript you can do better in Flash

Stealth's right about that, if you think not check out the new features for Flash MX, they're beyond words. I was just going to say flash is much smoother but you two did both great work. :D

Wow, I must say, that is really impressive, both of you! :yes2:

Now I wanna see you both working together, instead of taking potshots at what is better and what isn't. Think of more ways to expand and enhance the map - database integration, for one. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham
