"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Sandwich: If you've never read Freud, he likes sex a lot. Everything you say and do is caused by your extremely perverted subconscious sexual desires. The Oedipal and Electra complexes (wanting to bang your parents) are his most famous stuff, but the guy was obsessed with it. In this case, I was referring to his theory that large, cylindrical objects are phallic symbols and any interest in the size thereof is a translation of...

Aw hell, forget it. You killed my joke, and made it sound all awkward.:p

He was implying that you were over compensating.

And Freud was right. Everything anyone does, ever, is as a result of various sexual thingies. You want money because you think it'll give you power and impress the chicks, you want intelligence so you can more easily understand how to impress the chicks, etc etc.

Bah, that's like being in an art gallery. You can look but you can't do much else.

Interesting for a while but once you realise you could've been making art...

I don't think Freud ever thought of that. Which isn't suprising, since he was out of his skull on cocaine a good chunk of the time he wasn't obsessing about other's perceived incest fantasies.

Yeah, but they also lose all their male hormones, etc...........actually semi-become femal, kinda like the opposite of what happens to a German female discus thrower.

What was that line in Dead poets society? Something like:

'and next week we'll discuss why Freud took enough coke to kill a small horse.'

I dispute the fact that everything tall and cylindrical is a penis extension. For example, a streetlight is a tall, rod-shaped object. Why? Because that's the best way to cast light over a large area. A skyscraper in Tokyo is the only option - they can't just build lots of squat, square buildings (though I'm not saying that skyscrapers weren't phallic to begin with...) :p

And don't even get me started on lipstick, or pencils. If they were wider than they are tall they'd be utterly useless. Making things cylindrical is a matter of application, not of perverted sexual fantasy.

Now, obsessing about cylindrical objects in the way some people here are doing...there may be something wrong with that.

It's simply a matter of the pot calling the kettle black; people who think that tall cylindrical objects are phallic symbols are the ones who are perverted. :D

Yes, but the irony is that those people are the ones who think that it's the people who design that stuff who are phallically-oriented... :p
