The article overall could have been written a teensy bit more positively imo. Like that mentioned bit about BP being just... 'decently written' feels a bit diminishing.

Oh well, at least they still were willing to say FS2 is one of the best space combat games.

Also that's not much of a guide for starting from 0 (I guess we're still responsible for doing the leg work there )

Overall I'm happy FS and HLP are still getting noticed every so often but the tone here was definitely weird.

Not to say that it's not better than decent but some of BP's writing can be kinda inaccessible.

Also that complete lack of Derelict.

By modern standards, Derelict doesn't have very good gameplay and it's not particularly polished either.  While it and INFR1 have been quite influential, I don't think either one belongs on a noob's guide to FS.  Yeah WCS doesn't play very well either, but it has voice acting and briefing cutscenes and it's completely free so I can see why it was included.
For me, the largest omission is BtA, which has VA and a lot of worldbuilding along with good gameplay.  Personally I'ld love to see Vassago's Dirge on there but I completely understand why it didn't make it.

HLP has stuff that performs well against many AAA games especially on the writing side; BTA could be shipped as a standalone game if there wasn't any FS-knowledge requiered. Derelict is from 2000 and as influential as it had been back then I don't think it's that much stinging out compared with more recent stuff, just compare retail FRED with FRED_2019.
