I made a ship! (sort of)
Hi everyone!

A while back I had an idea for a heavy corvette / Frigate class cap ship. Due to my complete lack of drawing skills there was no way I could draw it, and most of the 3D modelling packages required more time and energy to learn than I had, so I ended up making it in Word. (Gotta love shapes, groups and being able flip and rotate stuff 😊)

Click here to see it: https://www.deviantart.com/nomadsreviews/art/UEF-GTVAFg-Heraklion-V2-807438967?ga_submit_new=10%3A1564332169

I have placed the description and rough images here in case anyone wants to take a look. If anyone feels like having a stab at actually making it please feel free 😊.

I took inspiration from many sources when making this. FS Blue Planet being the obvious one, but I also incorporated design elements from Homeworld (specifically the Taiidan Heavy Cruiser https://homeworld.fandom.com/wiki/Heavy_Cruiser_(Taiidan) and Vaygr Assault Frigate https://homeworld.fandom.com/wiki/Assault_Frigate_(Vaygr), Frontier Elite 2’s panther clipper http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Panther_Clipper and the Earth Force ships on the E.F.N.I. website: http://efni.org/Styx.htm. I also incorporated the outwardly cantered engine exhausts from The Last Starfighter’s Gunstar 1 http://www.meshweaver.com/last-starfighter-gunstar.html, as this would both improve agility and keep the engine wash away from its aft facing fighter bay.

Hope you all like it, and feel free to let me know what you think.

I applaud the creativity my friend, but uh, I think this was posted in the wrong forum section as you've technically not released an asset but rather provided a concept. A very nice concept btw.

Also, you probably want to put the doc somewhere else; you can't view it while not logged in.

Fair points all round. Where should it live then?

Re not being able to see it whilst not logged in - can it downloaded? I can download it but is that because I posted it?

Ask a mod to move it to FS discussion.

Ok, noob question inbound. How do I copy and paste images into this so guests can see them?

Embedding via the [img]-tag would be the most obvious answer. But you need to upload them somewhere first.

You can put the entire PDF somewhere too; imgur is probably the most popular for images.

Fulfilling such a diverse set of requirements would necessitate a compromise approach which would
likely result in a versatile ‘jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none’ spaceframe * 4 .
* 4 This may have the added advantage of confusing Shivan adaptation algorithms due to presenting
no clear weakness to adapt to, although some analysts disagree and dismiss this as wishful thinking.

I'm not an expert on BP lore, but with the idea behind the Shivan tech being "incredibly advanced but not directed" the concept of building more generic ships seems a horrible idea to me.

Probably the easiest way to built a GTVA-UEF hybrid would be to slap missile batteries on a Raynor or a Titan.

If you want overpowered point defense, use Maxims as turret weapons - on top of the range, fire rate and the ability to destroy hostile beam turrets its munition is most likely much less cargo intense than any flak weapon, ROF makes up for the lack of an area effect.

Hence the disparaging 'wishful thinking' :-)

True, although a Titan already has missiles - the Temeraire  took out a Ravana with them, and an Erbrus has SSM missiles  Also just adding weapons to existing ships wouldn't solve the problem of the fleets being under strength due to war time losses. My 'head-cannon' idea behind the Heraklion was that it could be developed and mass produced quickly. Being a 'jack of all trades' was a compromise decision - the GTVA /UEF desperately needed capital ships to fill many different roles, but didn't have time to design several distinct ship types, so one type that could do multiple roles to a level that was 'good enough' was seen as desirable stop-gap solution. Work to upgrade existing hulls could be done concurrently and designing new specialised space frames could be undertaken once the Heraklion entered serial production.

If you want overpowered point defense, use Maxims as turret weapons - on top of the range, fire rate and the ability to destroy hostile beam turrets its munition is most likely much less cargo intense than any flak weapon, ROF makes up for the lack of an area effect.

I didn't want OP point defences, just more versatile ones. The design brief was that the type should have spherical coverage without an excess of turrets (which would be weak points on a hull). A combination of multi-purpose weapons housed in sensibly placed turrets would achieve this. I based 'Smart Flack' on already existing weapons - specifically this: https://www.rheinmetall-defence.com/media/editor_media/rm_defence/publicrelations/pressemitteilungen/2016/mspo/05_2016-09-06_Rheinmetall_MSPO_Medium_Calibre.pdf

Compared to legacy flack systems Smart Flack would be 30% - 50% more effective against capital ship hull armour, a useful but not war winning / OP boost in effect.

PS - I haven't worked out how to do the whole split quote reply thing yet, which is why I have improvised with italics and bold, sorry.

You can hit "Insert Quote" as often as you want, just remove all the stuff except for the thing you're replying to.

I'll take a look at the rest later.

Re: I made a ship! (sort of)
Oh I think I once did something similar to the smart Flak thing. It's a good idea - just that it's not the most powerful one. I'm wondering whether they could built 2 variants -1 anti-fighter and 1 anti-cap with more or less the same frame though.
