Please help everyone
stealth is the new keeper of the tester list, please e-mail him after reading the instructions in this post.

----
If the freespace exe is to be successful and have all the things you guys want for your mods the comunity must help us.

We need testers. I would like to setup a web page that has a list of people willing to be testers (when they are not busy). All you need to be a tester is have a working copy of freespace 2.

Then coders and perhaps even modders can look over the list and choose the person with the specs they need to test on.

E-mail the following information to the tester list keeper (see above)

With the following fields filled in:

HL name:          The name you use on the Hardlight Forum
ICQ number:     If you dont have ICQ use the next row
Alt com details: State which system, ie messenger and your id
Os:            Operating system ie 95,98,ME,2000,XP
CPU:                 Type and speed of CPU
Memory:             Amount of memory
Gfx card:            Name and make
Sound card:       Name and make
Country:            Need this to get an idea of when you will be online

Please help, graphics issues in particular can have many strange problems on different cards. For example if I sat down and upgraded directX to version 8 and added bumpmapping and got it all working perfectly on my GF4 the chances are it wont look right on a voodoo card. But I dont have a voodoo card, so the only way to fix it is to run tests.

If testing is an interactive thing, ie the tester follows instructions from the coder then the time taken to fix bugs is a fraction of what it would be if your looking at a report someone has posted without all the details.

Ideally we need a list of people containing all major graphics cards and operating systems.

Please help

Stickified.

And people, before you even start to ask why this is here and not in the Source Code forum, remember we're trying to get as many people as possible - especially you MODders out there - to test the product people are working hard on. Remember, the end result will be both for your benefit as well as for the community for which you make all these MODs.

But please, only sign up for testing if you are serious about it - don't say "Yeah, I'll do it..." and then ignore the whole thing. And if you are simply too busy, that's fine, but we don't need this thread turning into a whole slew of "I would, but I can't" posts.

What exactly does your Exe file do?
I think I have heard about it, but my brain is like a sieve.

The whole point of the list is that it exists through the entire process of all developements. Different coders would contact you with different exe's when they needed to.

Its irrelevent what my exe does. Though read my sig for a clue.
Testers cant pick exe's, coders must pick testers based on their system specs or its pointless.

He's talking about the Source Code Project, if that's what you're asking. It's basically a under development FS2.exe, called fs2_open, with various programmers adding in virtually whatever they want - we've already got code for fighter-mounted beams, beam texturing, and DivX cutscene playing, to name a few improvements.

And if that was not what you were asking, I'll just go and hide. :)

Really we are adding what 'you' want.
Checkout my poll:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,9510.0.html

Our changes are only going to be properly put to use if modders use them. So its in our interest to do what *you* want. So you are helping yourselves by getting involved in this.

I challange each mod in developement to nominate a tester for the list. ;)

I somehow was never able to open your last exe, the one with the Geforce fix... (or rather, the rar file containing the exe)

IMHO, all the coders/testers should be on a testing mailing list...a coder releases and EXE, and the testers test it and post their responses on the mailing list.

My system will hopefully be more selective.
I dont think its realistic to expect everybody to test everything.
Not unless we start paying them :)
Someone would have to go through all those test details as well.

Perhaps for major things.
The list is for when you have XP and GF4 and it works OK but you know people with a voodoo card experience bugs. You go through the list and try and find a person with a voodoo card whos not busy to help you lock down that bug.

OK. Now we are making progress.
Could do with another Voodoo 2 owner.

Although Im am sad about the fact that 2 people consider themself too stupid to help. Only basic computer knowledge is needed for this.

hey guys, I'm new here, and I'd really like to help out on this project, freespace is one of my favorite games. I'd sign up for testing, but before I do I just have to ask since I might be changing my vid card sometime soon, but all is very uncertain... would it still be okay?
Currently with a geforce 2 gts, but thinking about a geforce 4, in case you wondered...

My only regret is that I can't help you with the programming, I really wish I could but my knowledge doesn't go over the basics of VB and C. :(

cheers

Welcome Wamingo

Sign up for the testing (use e-mail please) and just give me a shout when you change your card.

How basic is 'basic'?
Freespace is in C++ but its not really object orientated so its really just in C with some features of C++.

Perhaps if any simple jobs arrise you could be of help, if not there are many things to be done. Im sure you will be able to make yourself useful.

then count me in :) email on its way...

oh and "basic" as in... printf ("hello world");
well, dos prompt stuff only and mainly nothing fancier than string-manipulation (or whatever it's called)... the fs2 code is definately beyond me.
