FSPort Media VPs v4.3.x no music during "Good Luck"
Hi there.

Descent: Freespace brought me a lot of joy when I was an adolescent, so I decided to give The Great War campaign a playthrough over the weekend via FSPort. I was really impressed with the upgrades the community has provided.

I seem to be encountering an issue in which the final mission "Good Luck" does not play music during the fight at all. I also observed a video of a FSPort longplay on youtube (https://youtu.be/i1etRUVAkEw?t=21607) and the result is same there.

The music seems to work as long as I do not activate v4.3.x. As far as I can tell, this does not appear to be an issue for other missions.

I was just wondering whether this is a known issue. My forum search results didn't turn up anything helpful, so I just wanted to provide a report in case it wasn't known.

AFAIK "Good Luck" was always without music. Even in the original game.

There never was any music during Good Luck. Not even during the original.


The closest thing there is to music is the weird noise subspace makes.
Makes missions sometimes.

AFAIK "Good Luck" was always without music. Even in the original game.

I'm confused. Why does it play music when v4.3.x is not activated? That song is truly epic for the mission.

Probably an accident, which is why 4.3.x would be a "fix" for it, of sorts.

What music are you even talking about?

I for one don't recall even the MediaVP version ever playing music there.

Mh... no idea. There should not be any music, even without FSPort-MVP as the FSPort does not supplement any mission files.

I found this in fsport-mission-upgrade\fsport-missions-upgrade.vp

So maybe it was a mistake afterall, but I really enjoyed the mistake and thought v4.3.x was buggy. Sorry!

Well, that is a complete different mod actually  :lol:

The "Unofficial FSPort Mission Upgrade"  mod changed some things in several missions, most changes were done to the Single Missions and the Silent Threat Campaign (and its Coop counterpart) there however.

But if you start with the FSPort MediaVPs, you will launch the normal FSPort missions instead of course. This mod was created for FSPort MediaVPs 3.5... so it can be, that this one is incompatible now.

No problem.

I downloaded the source code to VPGUI, and after a bit of debugging, I was able to add the music to the mission file so that I can keep enjoying the mistake. :)

Sorry for wasting time. I didn't remember there was no music back then.

Well, in the Mod it was intentional and no mistake.
The reason behind this is, that this Music Track was actually intended to be played in this Mission.
But the whole Track was scrapped before Release of the game.

The Soundtrack was later released as part of the Silent Threat Mission Disk though.

this Music Track was actually intended to be played in this Mission.

This makes sense. The song goes so well with the gameplay.

Nice to have the backstory, and glad I am that I am now playing the mission as it was intended.

Edit: So does this validate my bug report? It seems reasonably obvious to me that the song should have been included all along. Given that there was a version of FSPort that corrected it, it would seem to me that subsequent versions should also include it.

I don't think an 'unofficial FSPort mission upgrade' counts as a version of FSPort :nod:

That said I do think there's a case for sticking the music into FSPort, there are already larger changes made to the original FS1 campaign. And music is good.

Okay, I guess I can see your point, but that comes across as rather unfriendly to new players.

I obtained it via FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar probably a few years ago. I don't know of another official channel. All I see is "FreeSpace Port: Upgraded Mission Pack" in the launcher.

That said I do think there's a case for sticking the music into FSPort, there are already larger changes made to the original FS1 campaign. And music is good.

I mean I always liked that eerie subspace ambience being the only accompaniment during the final mission. It really helped amp up the tension (even though the mission practically plays itself on lower difficulties, but hey we don't have to tell the newbies that). I'd imagine :v: decided to leave the soundtrack blank to achieve just that effect.
