That's from the CS thread and provides a more technical explanation.

In layman's terms from what I can gather:  Somehow certain table values got mixed up which resulted in enemy ships having the wrong amount of health (i.e., some enemy ships had too high health).  This fix makes sure the right table value is read and therefore fixes balance issues.  For instance, the first mission of CS should now be noticeably easier.

Update news:

Cardinal Spear has been updated to version 1.4.0 (presumably by Goober5000).  Since it was a major point update (the second out of three numbers), I'm guessing it was a little more than a simple bug fix, though I haven't found release notes.

It was one bugfix: the addition of the new $Calculate subsystem hitpoints after parsing: flag which was needed to fix subsystem strengths on a number of ships.  Without this flag, subsystems were about five times as strong as they were intended to be.

A number of you in chat got into some weirdly cultish discussion about what to do with my old flight stick that was retired, now that I have a replacement. Consider this a follow-up, a challenge if you will, to that proposal.

What is the ultimate fate of Red Mage Joe's Logitech Extreme 3D Pro that has seen the entirety of the Joe Plays FreeSpace Open series up to this point? If someone actually wants to acquire this stick, or you guys want it... I don't know, "enshrined" somewhere, speak now. If I don't hear anything before the end of the month, it's going into the trash.
