Advice for Max rendering?
I need a fair bit of advice on a bunch of stuff in Max....

1/ Lasers & beams - how to render them (static and for animations, if possible)

2/Flickering engine lights & the best light illuminaition setting sfor them

3/Any advice on luminosity settings for maps, because mine never seem to be as bright as I'd like

4/How to do explosions (debris & the 'flash')... there's tutorial for this, but tip and tricks would help out a lot, I think.

I'm a total novice when it comes to rendering (and modelling, to be honest) in Max, so be kind :)

Hey, I'm getting Max in a few days, so I could use some help here, too.

Everything I know, I have learned from tutorials found on the net.

Anyway for FX, lens flares and glows are usefull. *see my latest render, for exampel*

For beams you could use particles or a light or geometry. Use lens effects and volume light repectively.

Engine glows are probably best done with a combo of lens effects and volume light. Not that I usually bother with engine glows, though. I've thought about

Explosions- particle gens work nicely for the debris, just keep it small so nobody can tell that it's much of the same stuff, and use at least two models. Use any of the approximately four quadrillion Combust modifications or other special effects plugins for the flare itself- I'm partial to Dust Devil and the vertex combuster, because they're free and fairly versatile, if slow.

for beams, I use a spline, turn it to renderable (sp?), give it a white map with self illum at 100%, and give it a glow. works great ( see my video a few threads above this one )

dont use mAX render effects, use the video post ones, they're easier to use, look better and are more easily animatable.
