Compare and Contrast: GTVA, US, WW2 Germany, Roman Empire...
This thread is to compare and contrast the GTVA towards all previous governments such as the United States, Nazi-Germany. Facist Italy, and the Roman Empire.

This thread once comparing and contrasting is done would determin the "True Political System" of the GTVA. Although many would agree that the GTVA is that of a Federal Democracy & Military State, no one todate has formally stated that the GTVA is either a Military State, democratic, facist, etc., although Vasudan Politics is that of Byzantine era pre GTVA, so the focus is more so as the GTVA as a whole.

And in doing so , can anyone answer these question's as well as give a detailed arguement. The purpose of this thread would possibly better help others understand the "freespace - spacewar tactics and politics" and possibly even make a stronger base understanding on how to emplore greater "political" stories within ones mod (or mods).

1. Does the GTVA glorify the military such as that of Nazi Germany in WW2?

2. Does the GTVA glorify it's "Culture" as a whole such as the Roman Empire?

3. Does the GTVA emphasize on the theories of "decomcratic" rule? And if so, where is the democracy? If not, explain why.

4. Although the GTVA has it's 3 (General Assembly, Security Council, "Judicial(?)branch") divisions to govern the nation, does the General Assembly (aka Senate and/or Congress) control the nation? Or is there a President, or does the "Leader" work like a Roman Empreror?

Although these question purely have no right or wrong answer, alot of the answer are going to be coming from the actual story of the game, and "freehanded" logical information. BUt feel free to emphasize your own information.

I aprecieate a clean thread here and actual thru-put. This is going to influence my mod in progress.

im not familiar with the roman empire, unless you count the wierd idea of sending a tank division against the whole roman army..

i remember in FS1 that if you shot your own ships, then you were stripped of all rank and citizenship in the GTA, thus it was like the SST universe when there are civilians and citizens.  i think the average person/vasudan in the GTVA can tell the leaders what they think, but unless a large majority (~66%+) think the same, i would think they would make decisions for the "greater good"

Hmmm.... I'll need to go back to Freespace 1 here.

I believe the GTA to be militant, but not to the extreme of Nazi Germany. Rome would be more like it--expansionist but cultural. According to Freespace, Terran politics have developed from the Western politics of the U.S. and Europe, which in turn are based on ancient Greece. The Vasudan government, on the other hand, is probably closer to late Imperial China or Japan, with an emperor that has some power, but also a council of advisors. Note that the Terrans control the government and the military directly under the flag of the GTA, whereas the PVN was the military branch of the PVE.

As far as the GTVA goes, we're more democratic, as seen by the General Assembly branch. I'm not sure where the Vasudan Imperium would fit in as far as power goes, but it may be like the three branches of government we see in the U.S. today (Executive, legislative, judicial.) It is probable that the military is controlled by the Vasudan Imperium from the canon evidence: Khonsu II initiated Project Colossus, the Vasudans rebounded from the Shivan invasion, Vasudans developed fighter and beam weaponry and many new ships to take advantage of it. Take a look at the ships in Freespace 2, and you'll notice a lot of Vasudan influence in the Terran designs, but not much Terran influence in the Vasudan designs.

There is no such thing as "good" or "evil".  There is only perspective and which side you are on.

I'm not saying anything, but you'll probably get flamed for that. ok, I'll say something: evil/good is set by the current standars of people's opinion, and we've decided killing millions of people because they were not of the same religion or burning a whole village with the villagers in it ( I'm french, there's things you can't just forget... ) for no apparent reason, is evil. And I think, no, I know, that evil isn't strong enough to describe the nazi. And I might stop there, come I'm the worst racist ever when it's about nazis. Yeah, that's a race, those people aren't human, so it has to be another race.

I've always thought of the GTVA as more of a military alliance (note: alliance) with seperate countries still having their own governments, sort of like the European Union (which I despise, but never mind that). So, I guess, number one describes it best.

For some reason I read 'Roman' as 'Romulan', and laughed myself silly for a good five minutes. Little things...

I would say that the GTVA is something between the republic/federal system in use today and a Rome-like militant empire. The thing is, they need to emphasize their military to stay alive, seeing as they have been fighting wars of some sort every few decades on their own front. As for the three divisions, it seems likely that the General Assembly controls political and civil affairs in predominantly Terran systems, the Vasudan Imperium does the same for Vasudan systems and the Security Council is in charge of both species' military forces. (note how the SC is mentioned several times in the main campaign as being in command)

Also, this subject has been discussed before, and here are a few relevant threads I found:

so...when lots of people say something that automatically makes it universally correct? I guess the sun also used to go around the Earth, then. :p If you happen to have several hours of free time, I would advise you to read some of that "we're killing the world" thread. :D

Out of interest, why do you despise it?

I thought that the GTVA was a cross in between options one and four... Cuz it was like the Romans i thought, but didn't they have the Vasudan Parlament in the triad too?

The three sections of the GTVA government are the Security Council, the General Assembly and the Vasudan Imperium just for reference.

Compare and Contrast: GTVA, US, WW2 Germany, Roman Empire...
the thread has come a long way since i last saw it a couple days ago. interesting debates here. just for the record on nazi germany, as some american political guy said, facism is Democracy+Murder. pure and simple for the facism used by nazi germany. todays definition of facism is not that serious but it does glorify the state and military, plus has i think a parlament system. i forgot, but i can be corrected on this.

i recomed reading this book on american "globalization" and critical anlysys on after sept 11 politics towards the world. its interesting on how the west is globalizing the world in a way.

anyway back on point, the total data colected seems that the GTVA is sorta like the Roman (lol @ romulan), american, and nato (nato is the only single largest military conglomorate compromised of every nations military) political system.

interesting. any other info anyone thinks that would challenge this?
