That's not the same as DOS. In earlier versions of Windows, you could "restart in MS-DOS". WinXP doesn't have this, therefore, DOS is not installed.

I think Win XP is still built around the DOS shell, is it not?   But it abstracts it aways as much as possible.... I'm sure that DOS is still pretty integral to Windows, for sake of backwards compatiblity.

That's the problem... the turrets have no hirarchy... you should only turret a ship in TS, or you will go to a whole world of hurt...
Yeah, I know you were waiting for a very nice sig, in which I was quoting some very famous scientist or philosopher... guess what?!? I wont indulge you...

Why, you ask? What, do I look like a Shivan to you?!?

Wrong.
In Windows XP (maybe even in ME) the DOS has been completely replaced by a system emulator, wich should be in start -> programs -> tool -> command prompt
(Not completely sure about the names, i have XP in Italian)

if you want turrets, but can't do them. A cheap way is to make parts of the skin look like flat bean turrets. Not that great, and the only thing that happens when they get destroyed is they stop shooting.

They were working on it for ME, but never got it completely weeded out.  Dos command prompts can still be found just about anywhere though.

XP is DOS free in terms of core coding, but XP does have DOS as a subprogram. just like any other 3rd party software, theres a command prompt in xp. its used to reset your 7 day trial thingy to register the software. ( i would know my XP is hot lol.)

You realise that now you`ve written that you`ve been added to Microsoft's list. You`ll probably survive the first purge as you didn`t say anything nasty about them but come the revolution I`d start running if I were you. :p

Is that why I'm having so much trouble?
Cause I've been dropping files onto Con2pof to activate it and it goes through a whole list of theings then crashes withut any error messages or sign that anything was done?

Sounds more like an incompatible model file. mayb untextured polygons hiding somewhere?

Textures? Can't you use a simple block?
hmmm I dunno abou this stuff that's why I'm hoping to find a modler who knows how/has gottem models into the game so he can walk through my robot modlers. I have a simply AWESOME Zaku for the Gundam TC but it's no go... hopefully one of these major mods will get done soon and I can find someone who's free of commitments.

I just tried that and it didn`t convert the file I wanted to. Try opening a dos prompt changing to the directory the model is in and typing in cob2fs nameofcob.cob.

if ur running winxp it sometimes gives error messages (from windows- it should) if it crashes and it doesnt, but the window stays open, then its the program itself. if ur using the cob2pof FLASH (the newest one that is available in HLP for example) DOTN USE IT IT DONT WORK FOR SOME GOD KNOWS REASON! GET THE OLDER COB2POF converter. it should work.

Yeah the XP window is fine. The cob one opens a dos window, goes through 2 mins of stuff and then closes lie nothing happened... Every model gets this effect.... I will look around for the older veriosion cause I got this one from HLP and I think FS2 sector months ago..

I actually use Kazan's PCS for conversion. I dow have C2P SOMEWHERE but I don't use it.

I like using PCS as it wants more than one subobject and for fighters you have at least three (Hull, thrusters, shields) and it reminds me to glue the stuff together! :D

For model converting, I'd recommend PCS or some other converter with a Windows GUI. I've also had more success converting TS1 models using the scene file rather then the cob file. And now it occurs to me that you might want to double check that the cob file is a cob 1.0 file. (Or whatever PCS and cob2pof can accept.)

As far as cob2pof, here's all the advice I can give. I can't say for sure if this will work on XP, but the first thing to do is keep cob2pof from quitting as soon as it's done. If you right click the cob2pof exe and chose properties you may have a window that has a Program tab. If you click that tab then somewhere on it (probably near the bottom) you should see a checkbox that states "Close on Exit." Uncheck that box and hit Ok and next time you run the program it's window should stay open till you hit the close box. A new file should also be created in the folder where cob2pof is which should be cob2pof.pif, though the extention will probably be hidden and it will probably look like a shortcut. A pif file is a Program Information File. They date back to Win3.1 and are used to store setting info for MSDOS programs being run within a Windows "DOS Box." (Or the XP equivilent.) Me still uses them, though it tries to hide the fact that they aren't normal shortcuts. If there is no Program tab, there might be one or more other tabs which will have that option. If not, then I'm not sure what you can do other then to try and get some kind of command prompt. And XP should have one, even if it's not called DOS or MSDOS. I have IIRC seen an XP computer that had a reboot in DOS mode option before though. (Since said computer isn't mine and is now running Win2k I can't double check that.)

FYI, every relatively modern OS should have a DOS, even if it's not called that. DOS actually means Disk Operating System. Without a DOS, a computer wouldn't know how to access files on a disk drive. And that includes CDs, DVDs, and hard disk drives. MSDOS is usually what people mean when they talk about DOS, DOS prompt, and DOS programs.

Addendum: In XP you can bring up a DOS box (aka command line aka command prompt) by bringing up the run box (Start|Run) and entering: cmd
You can then change directories to where cob2pof is and run the program on the cob file in the DOS box so you can see what it's saying.

Hey Ryx, is this going to be used for Third Twilight? It's a really nice model...:yes:
