OT: Best sci-fi books at this part of the galaxy...
Well; we have an thread about the hottest woman on the planet, so why not have a thread about the best sci-fi books at this part of the galaxy?
I cant remember if I have posted a thread like this before here (I did post one at the Volition Watch forum for a year ago, but its gone now).

Here's my own top 10 favourite books (listed in no peculiar order) :

---------

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

---

TimeScape by Gregory Benford

---

Dune by Frank Herbert

---

Footfall by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle

---

Ringworld by Larry Niven

---

The RAMA-series by Arthur C. Clarke

---

The Space-Odyssey series by Arthur C. Clarke (the books are far better then the movies).

---

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card.

----------

Tough I am tempted to post The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, this would be a voilation of my own topic, since its about sci-fi books, not fantasy.

How about you others?
What are your favourite sci-fi books and novels?

I just finished reading Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, two damn good books. Foundation and Foundation and Empire are also very good, as are the Culture books.

Mal: Define "interesting".

Forever War was terrible. And Dune was less a novel than an encyclopedia.

You forget Gibson's cyberspace trilogies, everything Poul Anderson ever wrote, The Green Hills of Earth... hell, what of the classics DID you mention? I guess Rama and 2001 count, but other than that...

Dirk Gently books are pretty good as well, although I still like the HHGTTG better :) A good series is Peter F Hamilton's Reality Disfunction books... usually called the night's dawn series

some pictures of Reality Disfunction and series:

though I never read forever war, joe haldeman's sequel and his alternate universe (well, kind of) story both sucked.... the latter had too much needless sex...

I like the HHGTTG, the Honor Harrington books (relatavistic speeds, 1337 torpedoes, and massive battles that don't suffer from BoE syndrome), and the short stories written by Gordon R. Dickson. Can't believe no one mentioned him yet.....

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. I forgot some books:

The Gateway Series was also very good (tough the first book had a little to much useless sexual content in it, the entire series and their plot was highly enjoyable).

My favourites are the Lensman series, though so far I've only been able to find up to Grey Lensman, Arthur C. Clarke's The Deep Range, and a whole bunch of books of short stories from various authors whose names escape me.

And I do agree with sandwich that Peter David's a great author in general, though I think I liked Diane Carey's novels better :)

The Foundation and Rama series are definitely among my all-time favorites. Dune was quite interesting but seemed somewhat implausible to me, and I have yet to read the 2001 books but want to do so sometime soon.

I would also like to add some of the older "classic" science fiction novels to this:

The Time Machine (H.G. Wells)
The War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells)
Frankenstein (Mary Shelley)
20000 Leagues Under the Sea (Jules Verne)
