Which beam do you like better? I used two different methods to make them in Photoshop, and depending on which one you like, I'll write up a nice detailed tutorial for it sometime soon.

Note that I don't want you answering one or the other because you like it's color better - I'm talking about the end result, the final look, the Worke DeMagnifique... err... ok, I'll stop. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

They're both too conical and need more sharpness to them.

I know what you mean by conical, but the effect I was duplicating was an anti-fighter beam narrowly missing the observer/camera.

I'd like left one more, but:
-Where beam starts, it's too narrow compared to "muzzle" effect.
-Where beam ends it's too wide. Looks more like anti-cap ship beam.

So:
Left one has better effect(s) but right one's size is better.
Go figure. ;)

RRrrrrrrright

looks better IMO, the left one....looks unfinished in a way *sneezes* I'm at home from school *cheers* and I'm sick.

So there's my oppinion

Like I said ( ), there's a lot of perspective at work there. Just imagine an Aeolus firing at and barely missing the camera, m'kay?

Right one is only better, because its much thicker when it fires, other one is too thin.

If only you'd done it properly and used MAX. You could've just change the FOV and made everyone happy.

Personally, I hink it's easier to do it in TS5 and have it ook right, because it is in proper perspective, rather than speculating on if it's pointing right...

You wanna do a nice detailed tutorial on how to do beams in TS5? 'Cause I for one would love to know how. :D

The poll won't let me vote right now, but I say left. It's got screen...SERIOUSLY! ;)
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

I clicked Left, but then clicked both/Neither instead of the submit button, so I actually meant left, whatever... they're good
You are all stupid!

Both do...

:p

But on the left, I believe he used a small gradient on the beam's gaussian blur to clear up the beginning of the beam :p

No, actually, on the left one, it was a triangular selection guassian blurred and filled with a color, then another, slightly smaller triangular section blurred a bit less and filled with white, and finally a thin triangular section with no blur and filled with white.

On the right was a bit more complex... ;)

I don't like the pointiness of the origin of the left beam. They would also look better if you resized the muzzle glow to be proportional to the width of the beam.
