Because using Berserker mode as a joke was not enough, you had to turn it into a fully-fledged gameplay mechanic.

 Rip and tear, rip and tear, RIP AND TEAR THOSE FINAL FANTASY BEAMS! THAT SHIVAN SHIP IS HUGE! THAT MEANS IT HAS HUGE INTERNALS TO TEAR OUT!

 To make it less freespace you need to stop the players from leaving the play area. Either have some huge command self-destruct threat box or put some Shivan ships that will only fire when you leave the play area. And make sure the play area is less than 8K.
