Re: A celebration of Freespace
Do you intend for it to have a specific role (like the artillery Narayanas), or is it a replacement for / predecessor of the Karuna?

It doesn't have a fighterbay as far as I can see, so I can't see it having the flexibility of a multi-role frigate. This ship looks like it's built to kill other ships and do it well.

Again TBP-related - almost at the Shadow Vessel arrival effect from the Babylon 5 proper ... hurra, hurra, song and dance!

(I'd make a video but that would go into spoiler territory because I couldn't wait to impliment it into a mission)

During:

After:

ps. Part of the credit for this shot, aside from the credit for FS_Open team for implimenting the features used, belongs to Slasher who pointed me right at the SEXP and suggested the 2000ms timeframe for the effect.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
actually just a randomly generated displacement map applied onto a 200k poly mesh which then is reduced to 20k polys and has its normals baked from the high poly one

I wish our FXAA would be nicer with missile trails :[
People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Indeed. I had hoped someone would have had time to implement SMAA by now. It can achieve potentially better quality than FXAA, but it obviously comes with higher GPU load. A bit of googling revealed that someone ported SMAA shader to OpenGL. https://github.com/scrawl/smaa-opengl

A DirectX shader injector package called SweetFX contains some nice shaders that probably would find a comfy home in some mods or tc's. http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/sweetfx_shader_suite_download.html
Unfortunately there is no OpenGL injector yet, but apparently they're working on it. Might be faster to reverse-engineer them if time allows.

What's the topmost ship in that picture? The one struck by a torpedo on it's rear fin.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I don't think any amount of SMAA would be able to rescue those missile trails. They're so thin that they're rendering like one pixel per every 4-5 pixel lengths of trail. You can't reconstruct a whopping 80% of missing detail with a post-processing shader.

Maybe look into full screen super sampling? I do realize with the new shadow and deferred lighting code that FSO is getting pretty taxing on the GPU, so this might not be possible.
