Can you believe it? At least here in Sydney, today is January 7, which makes it HLP's 5th birthday. Yikes.
As an exercise: post what you were doing/like 5 years ago, and what you hope to be doing/like by the end of the next 5 years. :D
5 years ago, I was... bumming around the internet with a British guy I'd just met named "R128Thunder"... hmmm. And I was still in the middle of high school. :blah:
In 5 years time, I at least should be graduated and married. I hope to have won my wife over to playing video games. :p
-
I was being kicked out of school, I think.
And in 5 years I'll probably be dead.
-
HBD, HLP! :p
5 years ago, I was still enjoying my recent (6 months prior) release from the army. I think that at the time, I was working at a radio station here in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, 5 years ago was smack dab in the middle of the 1-year period between having lost my old digital camera and having gotten a new one, so I don't have any pictures to refer to. :p
-
Happy Birthday HLP, and HBD Announcements :D
5 years ago I was in the end of high school (or at least I think, 5 years is too far to remember :p)
Edit: Oh, I was also starting to work for MT :p
In 5 years I hope I'll at last have a decent job :)
-
Happy Birthday, HLP!
Five years ago, eh? *does magic math* ermm...hmm.....that'd be 2000.
Lets see, 2000 I was still at Droidarena, still writing for them i think. Back then i was about to head to Junior College (my first year) and was generally wary of going into a social environment (still am)
In five years time, i'll be 25 years old. If i can somehow get rid of this lethargicness their are a lot of things that could happen. I'd have a 25% chance of having developed the storyline for a game then, a 5% chance of having participated in the WCG (assuming DoTA becomes one of the games and I decide to play it and practice), a 20% chance that i'd have committed suicide, a 20% chance that i'd be in college doing my degree in India, a 20% chance that i'd be doing it in the US instead, and finally a 10% chance i'd be on the street begging for my last few ruppees before I go find somewhere to kill myself quitely.
Yup, a rosy outlook indeed! (no sarcasm)
-
Christ... time flies.
And of course five years ago I was bumming around the internet with a guy named Setekh (who managed not to change his nick, ever...despite everyone else giving him a few variations!). I haven't the foggiest what else I was doing mind you...
-
Hmmm, 5 years ago I was just finishing an Electronic Engineering diploma.
Now I'm doing Biomedical engineering as a degree.
5 years from now? Who knows. :)
-
5 years ago....heh...just started coulege and had no modding experience whatsoever..a year later I discovered HLP and here I am still modding FS2 (and about 20 or so other games so far) :D
In 5 years? I'll hope I get a decent job.
anyway, Happy Birthday HLP!
-
Five years? Criminey.
Five years ago, I was... hmm. I'd just finished year 10, ending one of the best years I'd had as far as friends and suchlike went at high school, plus I got out of my 3 year stint in Catholic school. I think I was also just about to start some work experience at the local museum, which was cool.
Five years from now... hmm... I'll be 25, probably be finishing up my first contract as an underground geo up north somewhere, hopefully preparing to go travelling. If I'm extremely lucky though, I'll be writing for a living by then... though TBH I doubt it.
-
5 years ago I was still a little child in high school. I had some ideas of what I wanted, but at the time moving to the otherside of the world and starting a new life wasn't one of them.
5 years from now, I honestly don't know. If I can make most of these things work out as I hope it does, then I will still be in this country. What can I say? I like living here. :p
-
5 years ago I was doping nothing noticeable... I think I was studying back then.
I imagine 5 years from now I will still be doing nothing noteforthy. Can you imagine have stressful it is to be naturally lazy? I fact, thanks a bunch for making me think about my future! Now I feel completely miserable.
:mad2:
-
5 Years ago I was 28 years old and working in a warehouse loading clothes onto lorries for a living. I'm currently unemployed and looking for training in C++ programming.
How the world turns...
Happy Birthday HLP :)
-
Sorry i was not around all these 5 years, but iv been here for like 3.
5 years ago i was in 8th grade, Middleschool i beleive, as im a senior in HighScholl now. Ah the Freespace2 Mulitplayer years... i arrived just as PXO was dying, the near end of it. Shame shame..
Anyways, in 5 years from now.. hmm
Im hopeing to have many friends (as i dont realy have any now), hopeing to have a Girl Friend finally.
My Brother will have been married and i would finally see him for the first time. I hope to be in a good Band, as i am a Guitar player (in a crapy band atm). I hope to have a good job and working car and all happy ****.
EDIT: Lastly, HAPY BDAY HLP!
-
Five years ago I didn't know what sex was...
:nervous:
-
:eek2:  :wtf:
and most of all:
 Hahahah!
-
Wow time has gone fast indeed! I'm not sure what I was doing at that time, but if the Volition BB was still up I probably was making my silly contribution to Tell A Story(anyone remember that?:D) . In RL : just turned 16 and so the Era Of Experimenting reached it's peak, resulting in a strange but fascinating life at the cost of record low grades at highschool. Luckily, this was followed by maturity started to reveal itself(on some occasions).
Five years from now: with some luck, I'm in MedSchool after finally having conquered my lack of discipline. Doubt that I've settled down but you'll never now.
And after winning the Jackpot I have bought the FS3 rights, given them to V and now everyone is enjoying FS3. In return there is a cheat that unlocks an insanely overpowered Hercules fighter after typing my name, I couldn't wish for a greater act of gratitude than that :pimp:
-
Five years ago... let's see, I would be about 12, which made me an ultra-n00b online, as my posts at the VBB showed. I plagued HLP for a few months with said n00bness, announcing a new campaign every other week, I think.
Still, HBD HLP!
-
5 years ago... I was on the VWBB, having been banned from the VBB for warez ( :wtf: ) and thinking to myself:
"We already have a freespace forum here... this new 'HLP' will probably fail... everyone comes here to the VWBB, why do we need two?"
But... yeah, i eventually reg'd... as Snipes...
5 years from now...? No idea. None of my plans seem to go as... err.. planned.
-
5 years ago I was in 3rd grade :nervous:
-
Hm, I was starting work on MT. Awesome.
-
Hmm...Five years ago...My memory doesn't reach back that far. All I remember is school. >.<
As for 5 years from now, my plans change every 6 weeks. So by then, I think I will have gone through 44 more plans.
And I can't forget to do this:
Happy Birthday...er...(What does a server have, power on day?)...to you...
-
2006-5 = 2001. Last year of high school (or 1st of uni). Enjoying it for a change, and just really learning the joys of the intarweb!
Five from now = 2011. Hopefully successfully running one of several businesses that are on the go just now or have recently been laid out in various plans. Perhaps married, or at least having lots of sex. With women. :p
w00t.
-
Man....5 years ago. I was Project Manager of Volition Watch, I was just finishing up High School/entering University, I was involved with The Babylon Project, WarZone was finished, BWO was started, and well...wow that was a while ago.
So much has changed. So much has also stayed the same.
In another 5 years...not likely to be married, likely/hopefully out on my own, really...god knows what. Long term plans seem to fail...
-
Woo! Where's the beer at?
5 years ago, I was 15. So I was in school doing all the usual tedious school crap. In 5 years' time, I'll be in the final year of my degree, and almost a fully qualified chartered engineer. Or I'll be flipping burgers somewhere...
-
I was like...11, and had no idea what the heck the world was about. Thankfully I've matured since then.
In five years, I hope to be 21 (unless the space time continuim screws with me)...and we all know what happens then, I go back to temporarily not knowing what the heck the world is about.
-
Happy B-Day HLP!!! :pimp:
5 years ago i was in 4th grade. All I remember is being obseesed with RTS games.
5 years from now I hopefully will graduate from HS and go to college if my dad keeps his job with GM.
-
Five years ago, I was in ninth grade, owning the UT servers and a regular VBB poster. That was the time when Tell a Story had lost all its charm and was just being bumped to increase its post count, the FRED forum was still a pretty cool place to be, and the Squadwar forum was about to be shut down and there was the deal with JTO and TCA's breakup. Good times. And I had given up on my super mega 200 mission dynamic branching epic FS2 campaign after doing three missions, as I'm sure most of us have. :D
As for five years into the future, I'll probably be struggling with my dissertation, or looking for a job if I get really lucky. :p And most likely still playing computer games and building Lego stuff. Can't really say whether I'll still be in this community though.
-
Wow, has it really been five years? I feel old.
Five years ago I was busy dodging homework and playing games. Right now I'm busy dodging work and playing games. And hanging around here.
And in five years time...well, if all goes according to plan, my armies will be marching across Europe to politely inform the leaders of the world that they have become obsolete and will promptly be terminated.
-
5 years ago i was waiting for the babylon project final release. 5 years from now i will still be waiting for the babylon project final release.
-
I forgot! 5 years from now, I hope to be married, still admining HLP in my spare time (my spare spare time, mind you - the theoretical wifey would get 1st priority...), and still in Jerusalem - I love it here. :D
-
I was like...11, and had no idea what the heck the world was about. Thankfully I've matured since then.
Yes, because at 16 you totally know what the world is about.
-
Five years ago, I was exploring the internet on dialup and would stumble across this place soon after. Five years from now... gawd, I'll either be in grad school or have some job in Washington, D.C.
It's amazing that this place has really been up for five years... happy birthday HLP! You deserve it.
-
Heh, kind of depressing.
Five years ago from today, I was probably either back in school (Jr. High) or doing stuff with friends, or working on the website/forums for MechWar3D.
Five years from now, I don't know. Maybe I'll have graduated from college or figured out what to do with my life. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with my parents much anymore, and I'll be earning enough to be self-sufficient. And hopefully I have more friends IRL that I feel comfortable around, can do stuff with, etc.
-
I really can't remember what I was doing 5 years ago.
But, five years in the future I hope be in college studying Meteorology. :D
-
Hmm...five years ago? God, I don't know...still playing games, rather than trying to make them :D Personal life pretty much the same though, hehe, minus a few ex girlfriends thankfully.
Five years from now I'll be 21, in college and hopefully building a spaceship headed for Mars (seriously). :)
-
Five years ago I was ...
Plotting.
-
Yes, because at 16 you totally know what the world is about.
It should be illegal for people to act like they know what the **** they're talking about before they're 25.
-
I don't often think that, and I'm 33 ;)
-
It should be illegal for people to act like they know what the **** they're talking about before they're 25.
I'm 26 and I still don't know what the hell is going on. :)
-
God... five years ago I was a junior in highschool, doing the same old highschool crap. And five years from now... sheesh, I have no idea. Hopefully all done with college, married, and playing video/pc games with said wife.
-
Happy Birthday, HLP!
Five years ago, eh? *does magic math* ermm...hmm.....that'd be 2000.
I like your magic math.
Lessee... five years ago I was in my second semester at college, and I hadn't yet discovered Freespace. :)
Five years from now I hope to be married and raising a family. :)
-

I like your magic math.
Drat, you beat me to it!
-
5 years ago I was playing Deus Ex way too much, which was about the only game I played for about 6 months. I was a total nuuu-b at any game back then, cept for Descent and Freespace, which I was hooked on way back when. I was entering college, and I got everything life could pretty much throw at me all in two semesters worth of time. Studying, Relationships, Real Life, Etc, you name it, it all hit me at once. Since then I've went through treatments for depression and social anxiety (which in the end, I actually made the changes to get over those problems, not the treatments) and have become pretty much lazy, trying to finish up school. In 5 years I hope to have a stable job and a place of my own. At the end of the 5 years, I hope to be ready to start a family of my own but as of right this moment, I have no idea if I want to do that....
-
5 years ago? it's hard enough to remember what I did 5 days ago...
-
5 years ago i was 16 and i joined this place:D
While being totaly adicted to FS1/FS2:D
And ofcourse meeting Steak, Thunder and tons of others:D
Happy B-day HLP!!
I may not be here as much as i used to do, but i still damn love this place:)
-
5 years ago, I was 8, and just moved to Belgium, barely spoke Dutch and was frankly having the worst time of my life
-
5 years ago... I was studying. Second year in polytechnics actually. Yeah. More or less active in FS2 community and curious about this place when it appeared.
5 years from now on... beat's me, let's see what happens. :F
Happy (belated) Birthday HLP!
-
Yes, because at 16 you totally know what the world is about.
It should be illegal for people to act like they know what the **** they're talking about before they're 25.
That makes me feel better :)
I'm 23...near 24...and I know less about what the hell is going on than I did when I was 19.
-
Five years ago I was in eighth grade, so I was probably wishing I was dead.
As for knowing what the world is about, it's really quite simple: Always put the shower curtain on the inside.
-
Indeed, one of the great lessons, and one that is learnt with much mopping ;)

Darkie!!!!! :)
-
That's not Darkie!!! He wasn't drunk! ;)
Good to see you :D
-
I don't think I was on HLP already 5 years ago.
I do know, however, that 4 years ago Nodewars was taking form around these times (late january or february iirc)
Maybe I need to play FS again, it's been ages.
-
Hmm.. 5 years ago, I was in the middle of 5th grade. I was pretty much over my FS high, but I was also probably wondering "when the hell is FS3 coming out?" And five years from now, I'll be halfway through my first tour of duty with the USMC.
Happy birthday, HLP!
-
And five years from now, I'll be halfway through my first tour of duty with the USMC.
I feel so sorry for you.
-
January '01, I was getting my college admissions letters and worrying about my divorced parents. It was the last time all my family was still speaking to each other. :(
January '11, I'll finally be out of college and working as an entry-level architect. Maybe.
My girlfriend will have graduated by then so who knows where that might go. :)
-
Well since 5 years ago was 2001, i was 16 and a sophomore in highschool being super naive until i had a gf that made me so mad i sort of changed for the better to be smarter :p
Also back then i was happily playing fs2 on my first built pc that was a celeron 366 at 533, 12gig harddrive, 128mb ram, and a voodoo3 3000 pci.
Barely went by the VBB until they closed down like over a year ago.
One of the major turning points in my life. ;)
Then today is 2006, and i am 21, sophomore in college:p
Girlfriendless as my last gf who was practically my fiance i found out after 3 years wasn't worth all the trouble i was going through for her.
i found hlp last christmas, and was blown away out of my skibby's.
Another major turning point in my life
Then 5 years from now, omg, i don't know how it should go.
I want to live in louisville kentucky where it gets nice and hot in the summer, where i know a ton of great people, where there's lots of beautiful chicks, doing for a job what i specialize in.
By then i'll be 26, hope really badly i have gf from now till then, because it seems i have lost my mojo. :(
Also when fs3 :v: certified all the way baby
Or when hlp purchases the rights to fs, or maybe when i do ;7
-
Eegads...five years ago I was 41...five years from now, 51 ... d'oh. 5 ago - working, 5 from now - working. Inbetween...camping music art kids fun games life. :p
-
Hi all!!! Long time no see. I don't think I have posted since 2002 :)
Happy Birthday HLP!!! What a great site. I honestly believe if it weren't for HLP FS2 modding and really FS2 would no longer be extant. One would think it were dead, but look, FS is alive and well. The Open Source Project, new campaigns, its awesome
Five years ago, I was active in the FS2 community in both modding where I was attempting to make a RTS version of FS in Star Trek Armada 2. I had succeeded well in importing actual FS2 models into Armada 2 (both cruisers, fighters, and bombers) and was really going places with the mod when my computer was abruptly stolen. The sudden shock of that really affected me and I lost heart and interest in the mod. I also worked on some campaigns and ship mods. I made some pretty terrible ships like the GTB Congo and Athena Mark II. I was also well known for FS2 Multiplayer where I was a founding member, along with The Kenny, of the Roughnecks.org squadron. We were very succesful and one of the best squads on Squadwar.
Well, five years ago I was a sophmore in a midwestern college deciding on a major and flunking 4 classes. Now, I just finished a MBA and am interviewing with marketing research companies and consumer products companies.
-
Lemme see, I left kwik fit around five years ago and bought my first proper PC (after amstrad cpc464 and various consoles) and bought FS not long after that.
5 years from now, hopefully I'll be living somewhere in Aus (Perth or Melbournes seems good) and maybe be working in 3ds for a living. Hopefully my mota won't have tansformed into a nasty pile of rust too. My plans change from week to week though, I'm no more sure of anything than I was when I left school 7/8 years ago. :shaking:
-
Wow time has gone fast indeed! I'm not sure what I was doing at that time, but if the Volition BB was still up I probably was making my silly contribution to Tell A Story(anyone remember that?:D) .
 Yes I do I do I do. Oh how stupid, but I do.
-
...dude! Where ya been? :)
-
5 years ago I was 13 ... 5 years from now I will be 23 and maybe out of the army.
You guys all do a good job here, keep up the work and Ill be back in 5 years
