"We won't ruin the content of our short presentation by describing it frame by frame, but we will note that everything you're seeing here is being rendered in real-time on the Xbox 360, using the current version of our Halo 3 game engine. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects should make it intact (and more) to our final game."

Enjoy.

While I've not kept entirely up to date with Halo, I do have to say that looks pretty stunning. The trailer certainly built the tension up nicely and I look forward to seeing some more of the gameplay in action.

Seems I'm going to have to play Halo 2 now... I've been putting it off to the Vista release that's supposed to happen at the end of the year. So, should I buy a 360 and spend hours trying to work out how to get it emulated, or steal my sister's xbox?

Can't say I'm really a fan, but it looks great for those who are.

Looks really nice, but I've got to know they got rid of those stupid, same thing, over and over flood battles before I even think about getting it.

Oooh....downloading :)

This means that, according to my personal timeline, I will be able to play this game in roughl 3 years.  Not buying any of these fancy consoles till they discount and bundle them.  I still love my XBox and I'm in no hurry to change.  Heck...I still need to get the original Halo for Xbox and play it through...I have Halo 2 Special Edition :D

I only bought an x-box 'bout a month ago (though my bro had one pretty much since new). Can't be arsed spending a week-or-two-or-so wages on a console TBH.

Wow.

That trailer looks pretty frickin sweet. I'm sure I'm not alone here, but anyone else catch that the MC is weilding the AR from H1? I wonder if we'll get a mix of weapons from H2 and H1 (hopefully including the old pistol)
Title: Re: Halo 3 - for real...
Post by: Deepblue on May 09, 2006, 05:27:15 pm
I personally think the AR craps all over the SMG from Halo 2.

I'm hophing AR + BR FTW.

Just make the BR singleshot (making the BR the old pistol in rifle form) and keep the new pistol.

When's the novelization coming out?

Ghosts of Corral is slated for early 2007 I think.

Halo 3 is the "last game in this story arc." IMHO, that's a good thing because The Fall of Reach is begging to be made into a story-driven squad shooter.

But damn, after watching that trailer over and over again, I've had a bit to think about.

Potential spoilers ahead!

Spoiler:
Cortana has gone rampant, Smart AIs only have a life-span of say 7 years, and the many copies she has made of herself as well as the massive intakes of Forerunner data only speed up the process. I hope they do have a cutscene explaining what happened to Earth after the end of Halo 2, because it would be a damn shame to leave that a mystery. Not much is given away, that's for sure. The Arch in the distant looks like the ruins of the bridge in New Mombasa though, and you can see both the Zanzibar generator and beach sign. Evidently warping out of New Mombasa dug a nice hole for the Ark. I'm interested to know how relations are going to work out between the Elites and the UNSC, as an alliance is certainly suggested at the end of Halo 2. And as much as some people disagree, I think the Arbiter was a kick-arse character with a kick-arse voice courtesy of "Goliath."

To show they weren't full of it, Bungie had a controllable demo for some press.

Here's what Gamespot had to say.

"The demo shifted away from the crater to the part of the level you see the Master Chief walking in from. He was controllable, which means that the trailer is pretty much what the game will look like. Lehto was able to zoom in on the Master Chief with the camera, and you could see the many different ways light reflected objects onto him. For example, you could see light reflect off the ground and onto his armor. A new materials system shows the difference between his armor and the rubber undersuit. It's so detailed that if you bring the camera close to the Master Chief's visor, you see everything in front of him reflected in it, right down to the ammo counter in his rifle.

It goes without saying that Halo 3 looks really impressive."

It also uses a global lighting system, and the entire valley/crater is mesh. That's 3 miles.

:eek2: GOOD ZARK!  Whether or not one liked Halo 2 or not, that was a frelling awesome trailer.  And I had thought Marty's music couldn't get any better...

Halo 2 works on Xbox 360 right out of the box, and with HD TV support too.  No fiddling required.  With split-screen multiplayer you can actually SEE things now ;)

Ghosts of Coral might come out end of October or so this year, according to Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0765315688/sr=1-1/qid=1147224948/ref=sr_1_1/102-1214201-5926543?%5Fencoding=UTF8).  Dunno, but I'm looking forward to it.  Bees! (http://www.ilovebees.com)  !reveal: truth

sounds like ol' cortana is going rampant.

I'd say gravemind is to thank for that.

You know, this could actually go in a freespacy direction.  By wiping out all intelligent life in a galaxy so that another may be able to gain power.

But, the game, looks f*ckin awesome.  I now have something to distract me by the time I'm in college!
Title: Re: Halo 3 - for real...
Post by: IceFire on May 09, 2006, 10:09:52 pm
The Cortana and Gravemind thing freaks me out.  But Cortana seems so good natured in comparison.  Like light and dark.  This Cortana seems to be more conflicted.  Does she say "I am your soul?" in reference to Master Chief in the trailer?  That'd be sort of fitting....

Not sure what to make of that story development although I half expected it.  Its been done in a really cool way.  I'll be interesting to see how this goes.

Cortana's speech is quite garbled. Sounds to me like:

I defy gods and demons
I am your shield; I am your source
I know you: your past, your future

Interesting.

Btw, I think I worked out why some of the earlier things Cortana whispers are so garbled. I think I can hear Gravemind behind her voice, saying the same things. Listen carefully to some of her first sentences.

Steak's right... there's a really low-pitched voice underneath Cortana at the beginning.

I expect another viral marketing campaign. And I totally won't mind if it is as awesome as ilovebees.

d3r3k. You can go through the ilovebees puzzles and story, though you won't find any theaters with Halo 2 hooked up anymore. I can't remember the specific site, but try googling for it.

And yeah, the Gravemind voice under Cortana's is just creepy as 'ell.

According to Lehto, Bungie is going for a darker theme. Something tells me the spartans will be no more. :(

It was all rather a letdown, really, from what i remember.  Effective, but ultimately with any good ARG type scenario the ending always dissapoints compared to your imgination, and IIRC this was basically a set of phone messages.

NB: watching that video; am i the only one who saw the end and thought 'engine'?

Here the article from "your unreliable source of info" (Wikipedia):

-------------------------------------

Microsoft and Bill Gates announces their evil schemes:

Quote
Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman, stated in a May 2005 Time Magazine interview that Halo 3 would be released as close to the PlayStation 3's launch as possible, to divert sales. "It's perfect," Gates said. "The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], they walk right into Halo 3."

Microsoft prefer to compete against Sony, maybe they have other evil plans in mind for Nintendo...

Well, damn. Normally, I try to keep myself above ogling good-looking graphics, but that actually looks pretty darned good, and that music was nigh-on orgasmicly good. Honestly, I always get all exited over cool scif-fi titles like this that don't try too hard [read: GoW], and this one actually has me all exited. In fact, it looks so good,  that i'm going to completely compromise my principles and buy an Xbox360...

...But only once the price has gone down, maybe in one of those packs that have a game [hopefully Halo 3] and the console together for some funky-good value. And only if some more good games come out. And only if my PC can run the upcoming must-get behemoths [Supreme Commander, etc.] without an upgrade. And only after I get a Wii. :D

Except that Sony plans to release in November [y'never know, they might actually release it in Novermber], and there was a big 2007!! at the end of the trailer, so it looks like that feel through.

And IMO, I doubt they'll have any evil plans for the Wii, as it's really in another ball-game, like the DS and PSP.

It is very confusing without seeing the changes-over-time and participating in the whole community aspect.  However, you can get a good summary at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_Apiary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_Apiary).  www.thebruce.ca (http://www.thebruce.ca/ilovebees/) also has some great pages, including a very well done fiction (http://creepy.thebruce.ca/) that is a good read and a great way to understand what all happened, both game-wise and plot-wise (but still in progress, unfortunatly).
behold:
It was all rather a letdown, really, from what i remember.  Effective, but ultimately with any good ARG type scenario the ending always dissapoints compared to your imgination, and IIRC this was basically a set of phone messages.
Eh, sort of.  (Though sometimes the phone interactions were live, with "The Operator" [the computer] herself.)  But the messages all meshed together to form a most intriguing story, quite well acted too, almost like those 'radio plays' of yore.  I highly recommend checking it out (http://creepy.thebruce.ca/AxonScenes.asp).  seek the truth behold the truth reveal the truth

I did check it out at the time.  It was very impressive, but if you do the setup well - and they did - any ending will inevitably be underwhelming.  I'm not sure, though if it shifted a single extra copy of Halo 2, although it almost certainly would have raised awareness.

I suspect it just excites the people who are already salivating over the game. Not that that's a bad thing.

Holy Minced Cow Meat!

I'm actually hyperventilating after hearing that music. Oh, was there some cool graphics too? *looks the trailer again*

Well, I guess that's ok for a game. :shaking: But the music in the trailer is every bit as good as in former ones, and more. Perhaps I'll have to check my budget when this one comes out...

Wort wort wort!

This makes me want to buy a cheap X-Box off ebay to play Halo2.
Can someone who played it, tell me if I might regret that ? For the record: I liked Halo for its enthralling storyline, music and overall atmosphere, and not because of gameplay or pretty graphics.

H2 was different than H1. The atmosphere is different.
Thats not saying its better or worse, just different.

We had an X-Box on our company in army (2.Jaeger Company, Jaeger Brigand, Sodankylä) with Halo 2 on it. So I had the chance to play it quite a bit.

I enjoyed it immensely. Campaign Co-op mode was perhaps the most enjoyable IMO... Not to say it wouldn't be nice to play alone either, we just happened to mostly play it in co-op 'cause there was quite often many wanting to play.  :D

I actually like Halo 2 more than Halo: Combat Evolved. Mainly because there's less of Flood around for most of the time, if my memory is correct. I like kicking Covenant's arse, but blasting Floodites is not nearly as satisfying, the buggers get quite annoying after some time (mainly when you run out of shotgun shells :shaking:). And I'd say that the maps on H2 are slightly less repetitive than on H1.

Both are immensely good games, though. Small differences in betterity, I'd say. (yes, I know I made up that word - what can you do...)

Doesn't have to be literal in the sense of being an Ark, but it could do whatever it does by using engines to move to somewhere.  It's just a wild idea to twist expectations, anyways.

If they introduce time-travel, the Bungie will lose a considerable amount of respect from... everyone...

I don't really recall when GS says those things, but I believe it's probably in the same strain of calling Master Chief and the marines 'the reclaimers', as they're obviously the decendants of the Forerunners, hence they've 'done this before' in a manner of speaking.

Actually... he has a point... Alot of it would make sense if there was seemingly a time loop...
But yeah, time travel... erh.
But yeah, I can see the chief dieing and it ending on some poem or phrases from Cortana...

play the first halo, he says a lot in the library.

mind you, he could be just talking about the chief's "reclaimer" predacessor, of whom i'd like to see some sort of further references to.

The second I saw the Flood, and knowing how Bungie loves their rampant AIs, I've been wondering if in the end her plan is to use the Flood to expand her own processing power and consume all life.

It'd fit with the statements in the letter.

Of course Master Chief pulling the switch and sterilizing the galaxy would make for a nice ending, but without the possibility for too many spinoffs ;)

The question is, whether or not the Ark is the structure in the trailer, or the entire planet, with that structure being a shield generator or something. I mean, the sterilisation of a large portion of the Galaxy save for Earth - with the Master Chief pulling the switch - would be one hell of an ending.

I think one hell of an ending wouldn't leave any survivors. I predict complete sterylization replete with new machinery recreating life from stored DNA.

Excluding prequels, of course.

The prime reason why timetravel usually puts people off is that no ****ing movie has ever got it right so far (except "12 Monkeys").

It's not widely known, but FTL automatically means timetravel capability (Check out Project Rho for details.)
The whole thing boils down to the fact that FTL contradicts either of these:
a) Relativistic physics (ergo if there is FTL, then Einstein's theory is wrong) - not likely AFAIK
b) Casuality (the cause precedes the effect) - could be...

OR:

c) There is a galactic censure that prevents paradoxons - actually there is evidence for this too...

There are two ways
a) You can't change the past...or the future. You play your part in the events, but once playout, things are set in stone. (censure case)
b) Time is not linear and there are more paralel timelines with different histories. (void casuality case). Thius pretty much means that the fate of the universe doesn't really matter to anyone who can do FTL (aahh screw it....let's start over.)

With a linear, unchangeable timeline you can have a meaningful story. (Without the overplayed, but improbable scenario of alternate histories casued by meddling with time) This setup also raises questions of fate, and choice - but not in the idiotic, "catchword" phrase pile of <cenzored> manner the Matrix raised it.
Can I change history? Apparantly I can't....or can I? I can't change events....but I can always insert new ones.

on a more interesting note, it looks like the old AR rifle from the original halo may make a combat, the battlerifle was nice, but the small mag made it completely worthless against elites.

Nice otherwise, but the first two statements are not absolutely true.

True FTL travel would really do one of those two. But if you create a pathway between point A and B that is shorter than normal space between A and B, you can travel from A to B through this passage. And although this looks like FTL when viewed from normal space, you never exceed the speed of light actually, and causality doesn't break because light from point A always travels to point B faster than you, also along the passage created between jump points.

This is what happens in Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Freespace and actually most sci-fi franchises. Even Battlestar Galactica does this, I believe (because the opposite possibility would indeed be counter-physical and thus would bleed reliability from otherwise very good and realistic series).

If you're talking about something comparable to subspace jumps or wormholes, well that isn't FTL. Not even close. I believe he's talking about the literal meaning of FTL, as in to exceed the speed of light, which Einstien presents as a nigh-on impossiblity, y'know, the whole mass becoming infinite thang. Jumping through a wormhole or subspace or 'warp' isn't actually exceeding the Speed of Light, even though outside perception may suggest it, and thus doesn't even factor into the arguement.

Really, that post was just an excuse to sound smart. ::)

Until we have actually built a spaceship with "true FTL" that works, we don't know (for certain) if it actually involves time travel or not because we don't have true FTL. We have some theories floating around, but nobody's built anything that actually changes a human-occupied craft's position faster than light can move.

Given our current physics knowledge, I think that it's still impossible to literally travel FTL because of the infinite thrust thing. Except in odd circumstances with extremely small particles.

It also uses a global lighting system, and the entire valley/crater is mesh. That's 3 miles.

Sorry, I was wrong. It's 13 miles.

@Aldo. Of course. If I did use it as a signature, I would shrink it a little more. That's merely the size I saved the .psd as to retain quality.

Well, generally speaking a signature is supposed to be, y'know, personal.  Otherwise you might as well have a billboard under your post.  Granted, I find the whole image siggy thing obnoxious anyways, but if you're going to have a whacking great picture of how leet or killer or xtreme or whatnot you are, then it'd seem to make sense to indicate you are connected to it.  Otherwise people would think you just nicked it off someone else.

The suit's changed a bit since Halo 2. See the hand guards. Furthermore, Frankie from the Bungie weekly update hints that the "AR" is not what it appears to be (AKA, not the one we know and love). I also appreciate the fact that they've gone to the trouble of coating the bottom of the armor with mud. :)

Please read up on a subject before giving smartass comments.

No I wasn't speaking about the issue with infinite mass, or the fact that you can't exceed lightspeed.
There is a physics thougt-experiment on tachion guns - or what would happen if I could send messages faster than light. What it boils down to is, if I can achieve relativistic speeds, than the timedelation would allow me to practically send messages into my past by bouncing the message through someone in another inertia system that has a relativistic speed compared to me.

So the gist is, if you discover any method to send something from point A to B faster than light, you also created a timemachine.

Check out the following article for a clarified explantion and references to the actual calculations:

It's also worth mentioning The Hollow Man, the poem referenced in the first Cortana letter.

Quote:
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

And of course the Cortana letters say:

Quote:
Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends.

So we should expect a pretty explosive ending to the series.

Yes it does (end in an explosion; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2diJm7U55U - 43 seconds).  I checked; the, er, woman runs over, pulls out that key thing, and a energy bolt is fired into another glowy thing in the middle of the Halo, causing an explosion.  not to mention that the last 30 seconds show a battle with lots of explosions.

I'm really glad they ditched the purple grav lifts on the dropships. They look much better without them.

Halo3 is the final in the trilogy. Not sure what they're working on next.

Halo - The fall of reach?

I would dig it as long as it's squad based.

I certainly wouldn't say the stuff they decided to cut was better than the stuff they left in, I mean some of the shots where the greater landscape was in view looked pretty generic, and the shot of Elites running looked pretty standard too. But, I got to see what I wanted, that orgasmic music being scored... oooooh yeah

All of this:

And that's not an Elite. That looks like a testbed lineup of covie characters... including a Brute... Ranger?

I still prefer the slow reveal of the MC, and simply showing his newly detailed armour in all its glory, rather than highlighting it with an extreme closup. The stuff they left out lacks the subtlety of what a good trailer should be, and I for one am glad they left that stuff out.

Meh, excluding the detail on the armour then. I still think that last shot with the covenant carrier kicks all sort of @rse, damn near CGI quality.
