Freespace 2 has been ported to the Wii (http://code.google.com/p/freespace2wii/)! I haven't tried it yet but I'll be sure to check it out.
Now I can dream about the days when I'll be able to play Fate of the Galaxy in my living room on the Wii. Ahh, yes.
-
Doesn't... Really... Have much to do with Fate of Galaxy, but 'tis cool nonetheless.
-
Oh gods!
Must have video!

Meh...these boards have been too quiet lately so I found a way to tie it in.

:eek2:!!!!!
... :wtf:
How does that work?

I got it up and running. You don't have to do any hardware modifications to run homebrew on the Wii so it's super easy.

It actually runs pretty smoothly. You have to be careful not to tilt the Wiimote too far or it'll hang, but with practice it works.
-
Holy crap! Haha, if GL sees his kid playing FotG on a Wii and realizes he's not making any money off of it, well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTyrhC9jFog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTyrhC9jFog)

That nicely sums it up.

I see it's litghost who converted it too. So maybe an SCP version is on the cards once he's fixed the bugs with retail.

It is SCP, just a couple months out of date. I don't use any SCP features or media VPs because of memory limit concerns.

Someone finally made a video of it in action:

Is the link safe to click? The thread title seriously makes it feel like a keylogger.

holy moo, loading takes forever
You can almost hear the person think "Now where's the T on this wii mote?"

We're spoiled nowadays with the loading times. When FS2 first came out it must have taken me like 3 minutes just to get to the mission briefing. XD

What, the google code link? So far I haven't suffered from using it.
Or that's what any malware would want me to think, anyway...

You cannot complete the tutorials with the number of keys available. I am advising everyone to skip the tutorials.
-
Hmm. If this takes off, we can write a few new tutorial missions tailored to the Wii control scheme. :)
Does it have USB keyboard support? That would be swell, you could use the advanced controls and, er, input your pilot name. :p

Unfortunately the code that allows USB 2.0 speeds (which are required for playing off a USB HD without stuttering) also removes support for USB keyboards. Sorry.

Why are you so narrow-minded in your opinion? As you said, you haven't even played it.
-
Looks pretty cool. Might have to try it sometime.
-
Yeah, I mean it doesn't look horrendous.
-
:jaw: HERASY! Not seen it, but i mean..............come on./.................. :shaking: It's just plain wrong in concept.......................:warp:
-
That was my immediate response, but it'd be a little interesting to see in concept.
-
Nunchuck would be essential in my view.......but still... How's one meant to Fred the thing.
It'd be like catching my mate and my nan getting off. I like them both, but some things aren't meant to mix.....
-
That's an interesting analogy.
-
My only question is: Why isn't this on slashdot already? Even if it only barely works, it IS freaking cool.
-

FRED it on the PC and load it up on the Wii. Same goes for mods. If the code runs, then any mods will too (except the MVPs.)

That's one way of putting it... XD
*Snip*
Of course the PC version is better. Who claimed otherwise? The Wii port is mainly for the fun of it and the WTF factor, in my opinion. Homebrew like this is a big part of what makes a Wii worth owning at all.
Once I have enough spare time I want to try completing the game on the Wii.

Yeah. Wanderer mentioned that he'd checked the code out after I posted that. :)

Because my sister has a Wii and I know how difficult it is to use along with very few buttons, graphics limitations, and the over all feature and upgradability limits of console games. I've tried a couple games with the controller. It may be impossible to get far in the game with that controller :D Actually, it is kind of funny to see FS on the Wii. That is a wtf moment :D Next is Descent...
You must be doing it wrong then, because the Wiimote is perfectly easy to handle, at least in games that utilize it correctly. :p
And like others have said, this isn't meant as a practical replacement for the original PC version. It's meant as a fun demonstration of the capabilities of homebrew applications and the extendability of the original game. Plus, it's just plain cool. :D
-
It's like what Top Gear did with that Gee Wizz to make it faster than a Mustang GT. It's extremely impractical, but it's cool. :D

They're trying to appeal to a wider audience, some might say "The Casual Gamer". Besides, playing with a particular device is what every other company does... Microsoft doesn't seem to let me play GRAW 2 on the Xbox 360 with my crowbar now does it?
-
Some degree of control scheme hacking is possible with wii homebrew, but I don't know if it can be used to map functions to a GCN controller for a game that doesn't have support for it in the first place.
-
The Wii could have at least given people the option to choose between the Wii mote and the Gamecube controller for most games. It isn't right to force people to play with a certain object just to play a game, like with that odd stylus on some DS games, which destroyed gameplay on certain games, like Star Fox on the DS, and I immediately discarded it after buying it and finding out it only works with a stylus and the gamplay was ruined. Nintendo is becoming childish, using remotes and pens as well as so many cartoony games and not enough non-cartoon games to make up for it. Sure Mario Cart Wii is very funny, however.
...seriously, have you ever used a console before? The specified controller (or cheap third-party equivalent) for a particular console is the only prescribed controller for the vast majority of its games, and considering said games' control schemes are designed from the ground up for their console's particular controller, this usually winds up working out just fine. Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy are both very popular titles, and I don't think I've heard any sort of remotely widespread complaints about either of their control schemes.
(Though I guess you won't be able to reply to this for a week, anyway. :p)

On reflection, I think this could be a lot more than a curiosity. The Wii has a huge install base, and while the average casual owner probably has no interest in a space sim, I bet the frustrated hardcore types who use the homebrew channel would make a pretty solid audience. If you could set up a stripped-down package to save on bandwidth that included whatever minimal mediavps the Wii can handle, as well as a preset Alpha 1 pilot file with the optimal settings loaded in, you could probably draw in a healthy number of players, some of whom might go on to do good works on the PC front. After all, even without normal maps and stuff FS still looks better than some retail Wii games :D I certainly appreciate the effort that went into porting FS to Mac even though it doesn't look its best and is a huge pain to do certain modding things with, and Wii and Mac are both white plastic things that appeal to Microsoft haters and bored housewives, so yeah, this is brilliant.

FreeSpace game of a space invaders style on the Wii. Casual gamers would eat it up!

There was an Asteroids mod for Descent 3 (and it's remarkably good).... It only takes one skilled modder with the drive to do it.

...Why the hell did High Max delete his previous post?

Hey litghost, the newest mPlayer CE has support for a better cIOS_usb2 that FS2 Wii doesn't recognize. Any chance you could add support for it in a future release? Here's the installer for it:

-
This is interesting anyway, just to show that the Wii can support a serious game and not another WAGGLE IT! WAGGLE IT! YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO ****ING WAGGLE IT! game. So kudos, looks interesting for further development in terms of making stand alone Wii games.
-
Does motion sensor work? It has the potential to become great.
-
Cooool.
-
Cool in concept, but I'd think you'd be missing a lot of important controls...
-
Granted I haven't tried it. Anyhow, the wiimote should be held upright like a joystick and the nunchuk can be your throttle, and there you go: instant HOTAS. :D
-
Ah, but having shaky hands would suck :P
-

If you turn "Mouse" to "off" "Wiimote Pitch" is determined by the accelerometers instead of the IR. "Wiimote Roll" is always done by the accelerometers, and "Wiimote Yaw" is always IR.

If it installs as IOS 202, it should just "work". I have looked around for some documentation of the Hermes cIOS, and have not found anything. Do you know where some docs for that module are?
-
I installed it to IOS202 (with IOS36 as the base) and it didn't work right. Conversely, the new mPlayer CE doesn't seem to recognize the old cIOS_USB2 so there must be enough of a difference between them to break compatibility both ways (I'd test this more but I don't have my Wii with me anymore). I don't know where the source/docs for it are, but I'll look around for those and post them when I've found 'em.
-
Finally found the source for it:

Where did you find it? There is very little documentation.

I asked for documentation and/or the source on gbatemp.net and someone gave me that in response.
-
Thats cool stuff.

:necro:
Been a while since I've heard anything from this and was curious to see if this is still being worked on at all. I do have a request, though: Since IOS202 has pretty much been hijacked by MPlayerCE at this point (and made incompatible in the process), is there any chance of a future version being able to run off of IOS222 for USB 2.0 support? From what I understand, IOS222 is basically the same thing as the older IOS202 that's compatible with FS2Wii. The only difference is that it's in slot 222 instead of 202.

Only reason i'd put FS2 on my wii is here..

An idea I had that could make use of FreeSpace engine for the Wii involved the SoL's modded version, but they've stated that they don't want SoL to be used for homebrew, and that's okay. My idea is to use the models in FreeSpace and swap them with SoL's, FREDing missions specifically designed for the railed version. That way, it wouldn't be a Star Fox port at all, and there's already a rail shooter in the homebrew channel called "CosmoRaketti" so it proves that it's not a new idea for the homebrew. The idea's still a work-in-progress (I was waiting for the thread to be bumped for awhile) so I won't address the any possible control issue, but I hope that the SoL team would not condemn the idea.
-
I don't think that would work too well, given the Wii's hardware limits. Besides, didn't the guy who did the port use some old FSO version as a basis?
-
I think he used a fairly modern version actually.
