Title: Which joystick should I get?
Post by: est1895 on November 27, 2011, 06:43:23 pm
I asked this question before, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away  :banghead: I was am on a budget of $20 maybe $30 at the most.  I do remember hearing that some joystcks would break often.  I have been looking for a Microsoft Force Feedback 2 for a long time, but not the others.  If anyone is selling a Joystick, please contact me.  Also, if there is some way that the current joystick that I use now can change from a midi port to a usb that would be helpful also.

I had an old Logitech joystick that had a midi to USB adaptor cable, I don't know if you can buy these separately.

Good luck finding anything else in the $20-$30 range.
Note: Do not get the Logitech Attack 3. I know that price tag looks nice, but it really really sucks.

That looks to be exactly the same as the aforementioned Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, albeit with a built-in vibration response feature, as well as some other minor aesthetic changes. And being from a company I've never heard of before, you're probably better off buying a stick from a company that most people have seen or heard of. Hece Logitech.

Trust me, the different thumb throttle and base key layout makes a huge difference if you use them. I perfer Logitech's version, as I find sliders to 'lock up' after a while, but it's all preference. And ya, I've never heard of that brand either.

I can see that many players are wondering what to get.  I have looked at the other threads and they were very informative.

How do you know if a joystick will work on Windows 7?  There is this one brand called "Guillemot Thrustmaster" that does look impressive.  I know it goes for more than I was asking, but maybe I could one used.

Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't take my chances with used joysticks, but that's your call.

Also see these (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78751.0) threads (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76947.0) (and I'm sure there are others, just search the forums (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=search)) if you haven't looked at them already.

I also agree with the others that it's best to stick to brands that other people have heard of.

Finally, if you're planning to buy from Amazon, note that joystick availability and price can vary from week to week (even from day to day sometimes), so if you're interested in, say, the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/) (which Amazon.com currently doesn't have in stock), you can wait a bit until they get it back in stock if it means a better price for you. Then again, it depends on how long you're willing to wait -- and honestly, when it comes to trying to get a good price, it can be a bit like trying to time the stock market. :D

EDIT: Sorry, I overlooked the part where you mentioned you'd looked at the other threads.

I went to the Logitech website and the Extreme 3D Pro does not show support of Windows 7.  Then I thought, how old is it?  Can anyone here say that it does work with Windows 7?

Uh... me...

Its a simple plug'n'play joystick, seriously.

When I first got my 3D Pro, the box did not list software compatibility for Vista, and said software was not in the box. I promptly went to Logitech's website and got the Vista drivers.

I suggest you do the same (for Windows 7, of course):

Is it only certain models that will work on Win 7?  for example. J-UK17, J-UF17   These models are on the webpage that you listed.

My Extreme 3d pro works like a charm in Win7-64bit.

There is a joystick similar to it that is wireless and has three base supports instead of four. I preferred it because it had a metal handle, but I got sick of changing the batteries. It may be a good investment though because It lasts more than twice as long as the 3dpro in terms of deadzone expansion.

You are thinking waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too far into this. It is a plug and play USB joystick.

I did find a Saitek x52 for $40, but I don't know if it works.  I already got him to knock off $20 because on the driving distance.  What should I do?
Title: Re: Which joystick should I get?
Post by: jg18 on December 02, 2011, 05:29:59 pm
The x52 option sounds way too risky for my taste, especially given that you don't even know if it works. Even $60 is low for a Saitek x52 (http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-Control-System/dp/B00030GSJY/) (I assume you mean US Dollars), and given how many bells & whistles the x52 has and therefore how many things can break... I sure wouldn't take it.

If you really want a stick in the $20 - $30 range, just go with the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It seems that quite a few people around here use it and like it, including people using Windows 7. [Disclosure: I use a CH Flightstick and Throttle and have no experience with Logitech sticks.] Just note that from the reviews on Amazon, it sounds like you'd do well to hold onto your receipt and the packaging, in case you get a bad stick and have to exchange it for a new one.

Hope that helps.

If you got him to knock it down $20 then you're obviously in contact with him. Ask him if it works. If he says it does, and it doesn't... well you know where he lives, 'return' it through his window. Or just demand your money back. Ya, that second one sounds like a better idea.

That said, I agree fully with jg18. Only difference being I use a 3D Pro and it works great.

I found it on Craigslist.  I did talk with him on the phone a few times.  When I asked him if it works, he said he doesn't know because he dosen't play games.  Then I said well where did you get it, he said that he got them from a friend along with some computer systems, and he rambled on what he had for sale.  My first reaction is that it is a hot item.

Well, my first reaction is that it is a hot item in unknown condition and available under weird cirumstances in which you may have little recourse if something is wrong with the item. [Just so you know, I have no experience with getting stuff off of Craigslist.]

Not really sure what else to say beyond what I've already said. I guess it comes down to whether you like to gamble.

Isn't it at least a bit suspicious that this guy is willing to sell you a popular and expensive item at half of the going price on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-Control-System/dp/B00030GSJY/), given that he claims not to know what condition it's in? It could be that the item is perfectly fine and he doesn't know that and just wants to get the thing off his hands. It could be that it's defective or broken in some way but he doesn't know that. It could be that there's something about the item that he's not telling you. You just don't know.

As mentioned, I've never gotten anything off of Craigslist, but my guess is that it's difficult at best to return an item, even a defective one. Besides, with something as complex as an X52, it might not be immediately obvious that there's something wrong with it.

Once again, it comes down to whether you like to gamble. Do you want to take your chances and spend outside of your stated price range on a used X52 that could be in any condition imaginable, or do you want to spend within your stated price range on a new Logitech stick that many people around here enjoy using? It's your call.

the guy must have a pc ask him if you can install it and test it

This is why I agree with jg18.  I had asked the guy three times if he could hook it up to any PC.  He said repeatedly that he doesn't play games so he can't install it. He want me to bring my own laptop pc which I do not have.  Like jg18 said it is very suspicious.

est1895, really man...

About the cheapest, new and reliable stick you're going to get is a logitech stick. For which, $30 USD + shipping is probably the best you're going to be able to do. Spending ten more dollars will be worth it - just ask someone who's bought a used stick that wasn't carefully maintained, etc.

Does anyone actually play Freespace with the X52? I don't see this game really working with a stick/throttle combo.

I've been using a Logitech Attack 3 since 2004. I've been considering picking up a new stick with a Z-axis and a right-handed layout. The Logitech Extreme 3D is on top of my list, since it's basically just an improved Attack 3. Don't have many complaints with my 7 year old Attack 3 either, except that I'd like to move to a 100% joystick-based Freespace layout and finally forget about the keyboard for most standard functions.

1: The X52 goes in via one USB jack, so FSO does it just fine. I've also hacked together a way to use both my throttle and stick, it is pure awesome, but i don't use it most of the time because my way is buggy.

2: The Extreme 3D Pro really is a good stick (well, for $30), I've got no complaints. Far better then the Attack 3, if/when you get it you'll see why.

2: The Extreme 3D Pro really is a good stick (well, for $30), I've got no complaints.

I also have no major complaints. It works well in fs2o, to the limits of my piloting abilities. It works in Mechwarrior4MTX3 really nicely - the rotate axis is really useful for nailing those pesky little light scout mechs with heavy artillery. It works in Kerbal Space Program - or it would if I could figure out how to bulid a stable enough rocket to get off the launch pad with enough juice left to make orbit. I like the way it fits my hand, and I can easily reach the throttle and additional buttons with my off hand without having to move the actual stick at all.

Complaints? hmmmm... well there's almost a full degree of play in the x-axis' center. I guess that's bad? Um, and the base isn't quite the perfect shape to sit on my desk, so I have to move it when I'm done with a game. And when I'm gaming in the dark, sometimes I'll hit the wrong control with my left hand when I try to press one of the buttons on the base, but only if I'm not looking, and the worst that that can do is change how my guns are linked, which is easy enough to hit the button twice more and toggle back, and it's always really responsive.

Short version: I moved up to the Logitech extreme 3d thingey about a year ago, when I finally had to put my old logitech wingman (not the wingman extreme, or the wingman attack or the wingman ultra whatever, the plain old wingman - two buttons, left-right, up-down, and a throttle. I played through Wing Commander II on that sucker, back in the day. Such a good time. Say, Wing Commander Team...) aside - I built a new rig and the new sound card didn't have the game controller plug that my '90s relic Soundblaster had had. The new stick is crazy awesome. I can pitch and yaw and roll and throttle all at once! My skills are once again the limiting factor in my piloting (though I'm sure someone else could be skilled enough to run up against the hardware's borders.)

Hmmm maybe for fs2, i've got a friend who get it, and we 've played on il2 1946 with it, and well vanilla sensibility is quite bad , after editing curve in il2 response it got awesome, in fact that's something fs2 lack for now with joystick : repsonse curve like in il2 or the dcs series game.
Even my g940 would really profit from that feature in fs2...
