Re: Which joystick should I get?
I found it on Craigslist.  I did talk with him on the phone a few times.  When I asked him if it works, he said he doesn't know because he dosen't play games.  Then I said well where did you get it, he said that he got them from a friend along with some computer systems, and he rambled on what he had for sale.  My first reaction is that it is a hot item.

Well, my first reaction is that it is a hot item in unknown condition and available under weird cirumstances in which you may have little recourse if something is wrong with the item. [Just so you know, I have no experience with getting stuff off of Craigslist.]

Not really sure what else to say beyond what I've already said. I guess it comes down to whether you like to gamble.

Re: Which joystick should I get?
Isn't it at least a bit suspicious that this guy is willing to sell you a popular and expensive item at half of the going price on Amazon, given that he claims not to know what condition it's in? It could be that the item is perfectly fine and he doesn't know that and just wants to get the thing off his hands. It could be that it's defective or broken in some way but he doesn't know that. It could be that there's something about the item that he's not telling you. You just don't know.

As mentioned, I've never gotten anything off of Craigslist, but my guess is that it's difficult at best to return an item, even a defective one. Besides, with something as complex as an X52, it might not be immediately obvious that there's something wrong with it.

Once again, it comes down to whether you like to gamble. Do you want to take your chances and spend outside of your stated price range on a used X52 that could be in any condition imaginable, or do you want to spend within your stated price range on a new Logitech stick that many people around here enjoy using? It's your call.

Re: Which joystick should I get?
the guy must have a pc ask him if you can install it and test it

Re: Which joystick should I get?
This is why I agree with jg18.  I had asked the guy three times if he could hook it up to any PC.  He said repeatedly that he doesn't play games so he can't install it. He want me to bring my own laptop pc which I do not have.  Like jg18 said it is very suspicious.

I never considered that possibility, but it's not totally far-fetched. This is Craigslist, after all...

It doesnt matter if he plays games, you dont need a game installed to test the stick

est1895, really man...

About the cheapest, new and reliable stick you're going to get is a logitech stick. For which, $30 USD + shipping is probably the best you're going to be able to do. Spending ten more dollars will be worth it - just ask someone who's bought a used stick that wasn't carefully maintained, etc.

I thought it was established in some other thread that the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X was not recommended ("you get what you pay for"), but eh.

Re: Which joystick should I get?
Does anyone actually play Freespace with the X52? I don't see this game really working with a stick/throttle combo.

I've been using a Logitech Attack 3 since 2004. I've been considering picking up a new stick with a Z-axis and a right-handed layout. The Logitech Extreme 3D is on top of my list, since it's basically just an improved Attack 3. Don't have many complaints with my 7 year old Attack 3 either, except that I'd like to move to a 100% joystick-based Freespace layout and finally forget about the keyboard for most standard functions.

1: The X52 goes in via one USB jack, so FSO does it just fine. I've also hacked together a way to use both my throttle and stick, it is pure awesome, but i don't use it most of the time because my way is buggy.

2: The Extreme 3D Pro really is a good stick (well, for $30), I've got no complaints. Far better then the Attack 3, if/when you get it you'll see why.
