Great game. Thinking of making a "iron man" type let's play here. (there may be my own mods involved)

As we start our defense of Earth, we first find we have to set up the base. Being a conservative old sod, I place my base in south-east Europe. It covers a decent area and several nations, so it seems OK. I also place a UFO Yard immediately.

Next, I start quickly spending funds on upgrading the base.

After 5 days we detect our first UFO.
A Stilleto II interceptor was sent immediately. The landing pad for another isn't done yet, but I had time to install additional ECM and targeting equipment into our only fighter. It appears that is sufficient:

No sooner than the first UFO is shot down, another pops in from another direction. The Stilleto will rearm and refuel before engaging, since it's still fair distance away. Meanwhile, we send the team in.

I regret not giving everyone long-range weapons - a tactical blunder on my part. By I position my men as best as I can, using cover to come close. 2 snipers are on both flanks.

The aliens charge in on their turn - maybe my CC fighters will get some action after all. My sniper utterly fails to hit with both shots, and I reluctantly order Spardason to break cover and engage. He actually riddles the aline full of holes.
Yay for us! The rest of the team moves inside the building to try and flank.


On the very next turn another alien charges and throws a plasma granade at Sparda. He misses, but Sparda, Scope (our sniper) and Scourge are wounded. That doesn't discourage Sparda, as he opens with full-auto on the second alien, killing him too. Go Sparda! Huh..guess our weapons are effective enough.

We hunt the last alien, assuming he's further towards the crashed UFO. He isn't. We find he came around the house while hunting civilians as is behind our backs. Melvin is prevented from cooking the bloody alien to a crisp by a civilian too dumb for his own good. Furtunately, having anticipated such things, the entire team was runing back like crazy..and it so happens commander TrashMan and his heavy machinegun were in range!

Victory for us!

But our UFO yard still isn't complete and we got no place to store the craft. We sell the thing to the US as they offer the most moolah for it.

The intercept of the other UFO was also sucesful, but with 3 people in hospital, I'm wondering should I get replacements or risk it (since we got medikits)

Having decided not to risk Sparda (him being useful in the last mission) I confined him to Sickbay for this mission. However, we're not going depleted as two new soldiers joined our ranks. We waste no time and deploy immediately to the site of the second UFO crash:

It is dark and the enemy probably scattered. The craft appears to be of the same type as the last one, so we expect only 3-4 aliens. 
No sooner that we disembark, we run into the buggers!

Our sniper manages to get one shot in, but that is not enough.  While Xan Derr is right next to her, he refuses to use his granade launcher, due to civilian proximity. Fortunately Melvin rushes from our dropship and manages to bring the alien scum down with a well placed burst.

2 to go and we end our turn.
A plasma bolt comes flying from the barn and hits headdie. The alien rushes forward with a blade attempting to finish him, but it doesn't end well for him.

He landed smack in the middle of our group, but Headdie didn't need help. Two down, one to go.


Plasma shots are heard and the team fans out. We assume the alien is near the craft or in the house beneath it.

Our assumptions are wrong. The alien pops out form the other side. It looks grimm as Headie is already wounded!
Our sniper attempts a long range shot trough the dropship:

And it succeeds! however, the alien is still on its' feet!
Xan Derr attempts an airburst shot, but the damn dropship in the way. Melvin managed to get 1 bullet hit on him too, but the damn alien is STILL standing.

Finally, headdie opens full auto and the alien finally falls, mission won!
Alas, our UFO yard is still not ready, so we sell it to New Africa.

Back to base for our brave team.

THis looks interesting, I always liked the X-Com type games.

Is this a fan mod, or an official game ? How big are the maps, this would really interest me. I was so much dissapointed that the maps in aftershock were so tiny :(

Its a fan offering using I believe the Q3 engine though could be wrong there.  Its been in the works for years and they keep releasing updates every now and again.  My personal preference is for the original game but this does well for itself.  Look it up on source forge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ufoai/?source=directory)

Anywhoo... when we last left our intrepid heroes, the eeeeevil aliens sent another UFO their way. It suffered a predictable fate:
Glory to our mighty pilot!

The UFO has gone down somewhere in africa, and the team is going in. Without Headdie, as we left him in the hospital. We got Firespawn as replacement, so all is good.

Our luck, it crash landed right in the middle of a small desert town:

We devide into 3 grups.

The two sniper chicks cover the main square from the dropship.

Fukken aleins turn out to be spread out again. one shoots from the buildign and hits Scope, but despite me bringing her wounded into the missions, she's still holding. Both snipers return fire but alsmot all shots miss. The ones that do hit only graze the alien.

Another alien comes from our right flanks and begins murdering civilians at the small marketplace. However, he makes two mistakes.
One, he remain in range of our guns, and two: he got rid of his human shields.

Xen Darr, enraged at such alien carnage, blows hte creep up with a full 3-nade burts.

We push forward, Scourge and Melvin hugging the house, and our left flank moving in. An alien attempts to shoot Firespawn once, but realising it is futile from that position, climbs down. His compatriot from the house exits too, as both seem to want to charge us.

Scourge nad Melvin make use of this and charge out of cover themselves, the aliens completely unprepared.

Scourge run right up to one of them and unleashes a 3-round shotgun burst. Somehow, the aliens remains standing. Untill Melving finished the job with his assault rifle.

The last alien is the designated prey of the left team, as we move into position. I flank the alien and ready the HMG, firespawn and the flamer guy in position to take it out if I fail. Despite there only beign a 11% chance of hit, the 5-shot bursts kills it. Guess the sniper girls did some damage on the guy.

No worries, you can change the name at any time. I also got Xan Derr wrong :P

FYI, I play this with a little mod of mine - which means we get acess to some more guns. A heavy duty pistol (to be researched later) and a bastard child of a gatting gun adn assautl rifle (also to be researched much later).
I also forgot to enable another assault rifle of mine (which is in the game files, but disabled). And I got a electro-rifle that is also not enabled. I'm still not sure if I'll enable these two, as it might affect save games.

Lastly I may edit the coilguin for this game. Not the stats, but the model - frankly I'm not satisfied with the model and epsecially the texturing I did.

I'll try to be more verbose in the future with the LP guys. Also, positions as pilot is also available. Furthermore, you can roleplay in the thread for kicks if you want.

Lastly, I will keep you up to speed with research, and in the future, you can vote for what we go after next.

Don't you find the human researched weapons to be useless?, I'm not familiar with the changes made recently but the electromagnetic rifle and the laser weapons are all quite weak to my personal confort, I think I only used the laser rifle as a long range weapon, and that's about it.

No, not really.

The Railgun isn't much, but the coilgun is a sniper rifle from hell. Aslo, Granade launcher is always excellent (except when the map is packed wiht damn civilians)

Somewhat badish news.. I brought the game, the mod nad hte saves with me so I can continue the LP on my laptop. But the save is a tad older, so the last mission wasn't done.

I'll have to re-play it... which renders my last post null and void.. Will update in a yiffy wiht  2  (1 actually) new missions.

And our UFO Yard is still not ready.... Our new Labs should be done in 3 days, but I notice we need mroe living quaters from more scientists.
and our budget is too low to build any..
What kind of a ripoff is this? How the hell are we supposed to fight aliens on a shoestring budget! Fukken beurocrats!

We get 3 whole days of relative peace. then the aleins are detected again.
Moongoose takes off in SkyDancer1 and engages. The Stilleto's proved to be an amazing craft for the job, damn hard to handle, but as nible as f****.
The alien goes down.

This time we make a hot landing. And when I say hot I mean "5 meters from the damn alien ship" kinda hot. The pilot of the dropships has a lot of crazy, but that just might be the kind of people we need. (NOTE: I did re-try this mission cause I lost headdie immediately because of a rather stupid oversight - I wasn't paying attention and dind't evne notice an alien that was right in front.)

No sooner that we move out, we run into our first alien! Firespawn hit him with a pistol burts, but that's not enough. Wanting to make sure the aline dies, insted of fireing another burst, he lobs a grenade, despite the small distance to the alien. It pays off as the alien dies.

As I move forward, I notice another alien behind the barn, his back turned. I do not have a clear line of fire, so I take up position near the edge and ready my gun.

The other follow lead and we are ready to take the sucker out if he reaers his head.

Our sniper gets a shot trugh a small gap as hte alien is moving, but that doesn't stop him. He does step around hte corner, only to be greater by a HMG burts and falls down.

Anothe alien pops out form the building on the opposite side and open fire with a plasma pistol on headdie. It's hits and headdie is badly wounded.


Headdie returns fire wihout a hit and falls back behind the craft wreckage. Firespwan prepares a medikit, while Melvin covers their fallback wiht full auto - unfortunatley, not a single hit.

The alien turn again and it fires another shot at headdie, but misses widly. Our sniper provides reaction fire and grazes the alien. It charges forward.

We are doign so well I throw a small celebration when we go back. End of the month, so money should start rolling in! Meanwhile we sell another UFO, as the damn yard is taking forever to complete. This time we only get 10000 for it!!!

What the hell do they expect me to do? Fight aliens with paper planes? With our current funding we can't afford to re-activate another base - not without severly compromising our efforts. Mantaining the one base is expensive enough - we didn't even have enough money in the first month to properly expand this one. Only now have we begun building more living quarters for more scientists (which we're gonan sorely need as we got far more things to research then we have resources).

I am faced with hard choices. I could build radar stations - that will detect alien incursions, but without long-range craft to intercept them, it seems like a wste now. I could build SAM sites, but their limited range wouldnt' make htem effective at defending entire nations. No, we need a new base.
and it will take at least 14 days to get even the basic operational. By the time we add a landing pad the month will be over.

We do have two Stilletos here, so one could be transfered, thus reducing some of hte costs, but that is only a stop-gap measure at best. Leaving our HQ with only 1 fighter is risky.


Fund allocations...never a simple issue, isn't it?

On the upside the rail rifle research is complte and we have begun production. I expect a working field prototype within a few days.
Also, in a few days our new science labs and living quarters should be complete, allowing us to tripple our research staff. but for now, we have to make due with just 10 researchers.


With that in mind, I begun looking into what to research next.  Possibly splitting the research mihgt be usefull.
One one hand, researching more about where the aliens come from (Alien Origins) might be handy on a strategic scale.
Yet, capturing a live alien could also be a big intelligence boon - but they seem to die in our containment units. We simply don't know what kind of atmosphere they breathe...hence an autopsy might be usefull.

From a tactical standpoint, researching how to use the alien plasma pistol sound promising. Yet our current weapons seem to pack enough puch so far, and the plasam pistol seemed very innacurate in alien hands. A futher problem would be manufactuing it. Can it even be done? It's one thing to use it, another to produce it compeltely...and that means we'd be dependant on scavaging for ammo.

One of our scientists urges me to go for lasers. It would make accurate, if not powerfull weapons - and possible larger scale appilaction, as fighter weapons nad even base defenses. I have to admit, this intruiges me, as the current SAM's have trouble getting trough the alien ECM's.

Not an easy decision and one I'll have to sleep over. I have to remind myself to send the representatives of our dear complainign nations a letter. Best I leave it for tomorrow, lest I create an incident.

I fully understand your concerns about the aliens and I agree with you that the situation is intolerable. However, you're barking at the wrong tree. The funding we're getting is table scraps, barely enough for us to works as it is. Currently we simply don't have the resources to set-up bases in every country in the world. So I am left with no other choice but to make some hard decisions - which is why the current base is where it is. Protecting the biggest population and production centers is a priority.

No, you are not the only one to complain - I had representatives form New Africa and even the Secretary General from the United America file their letters of protest yesterday.


I can only repeat to you what I said during the last UN meeeting - stop throwing money on useless side projects. Everyone is dumping money into their own military and defence forces and your Phalax equalents (which faield to provide any results), and we are getting royally shafted. If you want our bases in your teritory, shell out the resources.
Otherwise, please refrain from sending one complaint after another. I got one base and a handfull of people and the entire planet to defend, and I don't need to deal with your garbage on top of that.

NOooooo...game crashed during  the most tense and epic mission. Team , we got into a fubar situation and for 3 turns every alien on the map was shooting at headde! An they faield to kill him. It took us 3 turn to barely take 2 out.
Then their turn and they start shooting at headdei again..and miss and miss...and then they hit me (since I was covering headdie) and game crash!

More aliens ships incoming. Mongoose downs 1 and we send a dropship. We're not even half way there when another UFO is detected.
Skydancer 2 is sent with a test loadout of 3 shiva cannons. Short range, but it should rip anything apart.

Got to say, so far we have been VERY lucky.
All the mission so far went without casualteis...which is rather unexpected. And Headdie's luck moreso than anyone elses. In one mission he survived 30+ plasma shots wiht only minor wounds.
The rest of the squad tried to shave him and make lucky charms out of his hair.

The wreckage of the craft makes positioning tricky and most of the team can't get a shot. Worse yet, Scourge an Firespawn who are the closest both have close combat weapons. That doens't stop them from trying. Even at this range, Firespawn gets a hit, but it's not enouigh to kill the alien.

We are ambushed by 3 aliens - two emerge from the far side of the village, and another opens fire on us from the upper floor of the small shop next to us.

Headde, the ever-popular bullet magnet gets the worst of this exchange, but his luck holds. Sparda gets 1 plasma bolt to the chest but returns fire and badly wounds the alien.

Our snipers fail to bring down the aleins and sniper gurl gets injnured.

Next turn however, they wound it enough for headdie to finish it with a well-placed burts.

A new contact emerges on our radar. In the skies above Norway, we detect a large UFO.

I recongnize it as the same large UFO we captured. While we haven't completed an analysis of it yet, a visual inspections told me enough. It is heavily armored and unlike the scout - it is armed.
Skydancer 1 and 2 are ready, but I decide to keep them grounded. If the UFO escapes it will reflect poorly on us - but I can't risk loosing fighters and equipment now. We can't afford to replace them or the piltos. Mongoose isn't happy about it.
I gamble that if it's a transport, it's bound to land somewhere and our chances are better on the ground than in the air. My gamble pays off, as it lands in Hamburg ourtskits.

Another alien pops up at the refining area, but our flanking team doesn't have a clear shot. All of his shots miss horribly, stopped by various obstructions.

The alien takes two pot shots that miss and then charges Firespawn...passing right next to me and Scourge. Very bad move.

I'ts actually funny as the skill used depends on fire mode and ammo.

Granade launcher is Heavy/Explosive methinks. It also has flechette ammo, si it might even use assault for that one. Will have to check.

EM rifle is a heavy weapon, but uses actaully Assault(single shot, burst) /Sniper (aim)

Shotgun is Close (normal ammo)/ Assault (Flechette ammo)

Retsof hits is with precision reaction fire and the alein changes target, runnign for him. This however, brings him into range of Ravenholmes SMG'.

We land next to a stadium, the alien UFO nowhere to be seen. Only hte screams from the building convince u they are still there.

Headde, wanting to make use of their clustering, runs down and fires a burst of grenades (which where supposed to be incendiery, but normal grenades were loaded).

That is still enough to kill 3 of them. Dekker  has only enough AP's for a single burts - not enough to take out the 4th alien, wounded by hte explosions. The rest of the team is lagging behind and won't be able to make it this turn - another huge mistake.

Headdies luck finally runs out, he is hit and falls, the rest are  wounded. A small consolation is that the grenade bounced and killed the 4th alien.
Crying bloody vengance, Dekker and Retsof finish it off.

We return victorious, but there is no celebration.
Headdie is post-humusly awared the rank of Lance-Corporal.

And no even an hour later, a critical IFF mistake is descovered, as the craft Skydancer 2 was sent to intercept was NOT an alien Scout, but an alien fighter. Not being properly equipped, Skydancer 2 is lost, Crizza is MIA and a serch party is sent out.

A dark day for our organization indeed.

SUMMARY:
Crap happened. Wrong shells loaded (incendieary would have killed em all), I mvoed too fast forward and I mis-identifed the UFO. Fighter and scout look very similar and I didn't expect it to pop up so soon. Loss of equipment (fully kited-out stilleto) is severe given our lack of moneys. :(

I am contemplating a re-load, but I'm nto sure. Headde, you can roll a new character if we don't re-try..

EDIT:
I'm playing on Standard Difficulty..the only modification (aside from more guns) is setting mroe starting soldiers (so I had a big enough selection to create the motly crew that properly represents you guys)
And hte game is BRUTAL.

I have several save files (one for a "perfect" playtrough), so just for kicks I loaded before the stadium fiascio and averted it and auto'd the next several missions (all victories, the auto is very player biased) and Asia HATES us. In jsut 24 hours it's desposition dropped by 6 stages.. SIX. I sold 4 ufo in a row to them (giving you +1 relationship increase) but it keeps droping back to "Giving Up". Maybe it's a bug. Or maybe the aliens are gangbanging their Chairman - I can't tell since we dont' have radar coverage there.

So this is probably what awaits us in the future (when we resume hte LP from the regular save). With our economy in the crapper already, this doesn't look good.

And we're getting ripped off everywhere. A plasma pistol sells for about as much (of not less) as an asasult rifle.... :wtf:
You can't make money sellign alein stuff with these rates.
Just making a most basic base (activation + command center, powerplant, storage, living quarters)  costs almost 400 000. That's without a landing pad, dropship or anything else.....

I'm contemplating editing hte sell rates for alien stuff, as this is downrgiht redicolous....

ATM the situation is as follows - I currenlty have 6 saves.

2 are before the stadium frakup
1 is right after
--
1 is re-loaded (stadium mission didn't appear) and now 3 missions later (LASER OPERATION just researched, no one dead, Skydancer 2 not lost)
1 is 3 missios later after the fiasco (LASER OPERATION research done, Headdie dead, Headdie 2 recruited, Skydancer 2 lost)

In both cases Asia hates our guts and financially we are barely making it. (power plant, living quarters and storage for Area 51 base eat 80% of the funds)
We are basicly down to roughly 20.000 $.


I can pick up from any of the two saves.
So you vote guys.

Small correction - the "perfect" save is 8 days later, the "noraml2 sve is 3 days later.

The interceptor itself is Stilleto (20.000) + targeting computer, ECM( around 16000) + all weapons (3 shivas at 5000 each + ammo) ..so about 60,000 $ loss total. More than a Command Center

A plasma pistol sells for 2000$ b.t.w. and I have already been selling a few.


That said, during hte "normal" playtrough, the aliens found our base and launched an attack. A rag-tage team of underequipped (no amor) and wounded defenders fought them off without losses!

I vote for the no-loss save, and mod the sell-rates for alien-tech, it ought to be a money-maker to salvage things, like in the X-Com UFO Defense game, where i could sell a few Plasma Pistols and have a few 100K in the pocket, including selling a few clips of ammo.

Also, do i have the EM Gun already, seeing as Headdie has the Nade Launcher(or did he have one earlier and i didn't notice?)

Alrighty...

Continuing with our less fortunate. I'm drawn to re-loading, but I said this will be a Iron Man let's play...soo...
The highest ranking and most wouned were pulled out for some R&R, and the new blood was put in the team.
Anywhoo, 2 short mission - 1 auto-resolved, the other went swimmingly, but due to a frakup, no screenies.

However, the 3'rd one was an alien assault. Tehy detected our base and attacked. And since equipment is tied to those in the dropship, we were left with the wounded and chillaxin soldiers, with only the left-overs from the armory.
There's was only one combat vest available....

Even worse, the first base is auto-generated (you don't place buildings) and it fraked us up, reeeeal good. Both the Power Plant and the Command Center (critical buildings) right next to the entrance, the living quarters (where we started) on the other side of the base. With a large inacessible area in between.
If the aliens had any brains (and proper explosives) this would have been a game over.

Not short after we detect another UFO - visually it's a fighter-class. The same that took out Skydancer 2 (but the pilot survived..until we buy a new interceptor, he can pilot a dropship).
Mongoose is itching for revenge and I give an all clear, despite the risks. And it pays off. Mongoose shoots down another boogie and the team goes straight in.

3 aliens are spotted immediately. Ravenholme tests out the EM rifle on it - 2 shots, 2 hits, 1 dead alien.
the other is still far out, so we move to position ourselves better. Scourge runs into the the broken stables, and we discover another alien in the barn to our left.

The upper alien start chasing a civilian, and a while barrage of reaction fire ensues from our side. Everyone misses...except for Scourge, who ironicly has the weapon with the shortest range.

No sooner that I disembark, I find myself under alien fire. Lacking proper range with my weapon, Xen Darr steps out, prompting another volley from the enemy. Again, without hits. Xen Darr, kneels, aims and lets the rocket fly, hitting the alien straight in the chest!

Dubbing it Skydancer 2-2, I set forth to equip it better than the last one. Again 3 shiva cannons, this time with explosive ammunition. but this time I also add polymer armor. It takes a whole day to install, but the increased durabillity is worth it, despite reduced range and speed. Because of this, Skydancer 2-2 will be reserved for shorter intercepts.

I contemplate installing the same armor on Skydancer 1, but I can't afford to have both fighters inoperable at the same time.

Skydancer 1 engages a UFO fighter over the sea and brings it down, altough suffering some damage in the process. I honestly lost track of Mongooses kills.


A new Terror mission is Asia. A good chance to improve relations with the Chairman. Pred and Rodo are added to the team., while some of our more active members (me and Xan Derr included) take a break.

For 3 turns Scope and Retsef try hitting it with sniper rifles, but score only 1 glancing hit. Even Pred attempts one missile shot, but misses. No further attempts are made by him, given the aliens proximity to civilians.

Meanwhile, Firrespawn and Headde2 go around and run into another alien exiting the space craft.

The injured alien walk right into Firespawn reaction fire and falls down. Next turn Firespawn tries a few long range shots at the last alien.. and his second burst hits the mark.

As you can see on this image, there are two entrance points the aliens are most likely to use: the main entrance or the large hangar.One COULD also technicly enter from the workshop or the command center tower, but those require opening of door and going a bit longer way. I never seen alines use them.


We run forward as fast as we can. As we approach the hangar and command center, I finally reserve a few TU's for minimal reaction fire. The team splits. Melvin and Sparda take the upper entrance into the large hangar. Vixen and Xan Darr take the right entrance to it. Me and Scourge move towards the main entrance.

Melvin makes first contact with the enemy.

The alien is wearing some kind of armor and there's no clear fireing line. Furthermore, with most TU's already spent, Melvin falls back a few steps. Sparda prepares reaction fire. Everyone else moves in.

That alien moves forward and tries to shoot out troops with a plasma pistol, but a bad angle and being peppered by Spardas reaction fire, cause it to miss every time.

Sparda moves forward, closer to the stairs. There is an unarmored alien with a plasma rifle upstairs, but he can't hit anyone without climbing down.
Vixen and Xen Darr also enter the room, and run below the landing pad.

Plasma fire comes from behind, aimed at Sparda. It misses. another alien pops right from a side room next to Melvin:

Two full bursts later the alien finally falls. Melvin has only 1 TU left. Yet that couldn't be the alien shooting at Sparda. so we look around.

And we find one on the upper floor,right behind us. Xen Darr carefully aims 2 incendiary grenades trough the narrow gap between the floor and landing pad and trough the gaps in the railing. Risky, but the alien dies in a fiery explosion.

The last alien pops above with a plasma rifle. Unarmored and Melvin has a clear shot. but if it fails...he won't have any TU's to retreat.

Not sure..I think a combo of mission done and Mind statistic. Just FYI - most of the changes didn't go trough. The items price is unchanged (i have to start a new game), some weapons don't show up (and won't know about others for sure).

The only thing that does appear to work is increased price for UFO's. Also, adding the StarFire interceptor crashes the damn game. Looking into it on the UFO:AI forums, but it looks like they might changed some code from 2.3...

Also, I just realized you can (apprently) dual-carry pistols, but you can't dual FIRE. Which is strange. I could swear I saw both pistols go off at once.
Or did Firespawn kill all of those aliens with just one pistol?

I dont know how AI handles ranks but in the original games it was a combination of performance and the total number of soldiers you have alive in the game at the end of the mission which is when rank adjustments typically happen in XCOM games

They downright refuse to change anything, regardless of what arguments people bring.
The story for the campaign is attrocious - people have complained - they don't wanna hear it.
They don't wanna hear about more human weapons.
They don't wanna hear about dual-wielding pistols.
No to man-portable gattling guns.
No to AI controlled allies (soldiers/police).

A new game it is. Already started it for testing purposes. I actually re-started hte game 50 times (literaly) because the randomizer hated me. I couldn't re-create our squad because it wither kept giving me s*** soldiers, or 90% female soldiers, or all same-looking soldiers.

A Smoother start this time, only 3 battels before the 1st month ended. Didn't screenshot it. Will see about the next set of missions. And I already set-up the basics for the second base!

So..our new adventure begins. Again I pick Europe as our starting position - except this time I go even further east.
I immediatly plop a extra laboratory (100.000$) and living quarters (40000$) .
Normally I'd be putting more buildings in, but I re-direct hte funs to start preparing another base, code-named "Rising Sun" (yes, I know it's not Japan, but I dont' care)
I also buy 2 new VHS rifles, that are a bit mroe accurete than the regular assault rifles, but a bit weaker. I also fully equipp our lone Stilleto interceptor.
Crizza gets that one. Untill a new base is up and ready, Penguin gets to fly the dropship.

So off we go. First UFO detected is shot down by Crizza  over the middle east. The team goes in.

No sooner that we disembar, we notice an alien on the stairs. It gets softened up by Patriot, before Scourge finished it off with his shotgun. Everoyne else fans out.

Another alien pops up on the marke,t chasing a civilian. But, seeing Phalanx soldiers, he turns around and throws a plasma grenade at Melvin Huffleston IV'th. It flies only a few feet before blowing up.
Seeing how there's an civilian right next to the alien, burst fire was ill-advised. Melvin however, takes the alien wiht a single bullet. HEADSHOT!

Tor this mission I bout anohter VHS and replaced my HMG with it. Everyone else keeps their loadout.
We start relatively clsoe to the UFO. Unfortunately, I only brought 1 sniper and 1 bazooka and both are on the other side of the dropship.

Still, I set up a wall of fire with 3 soldiers spending all TU's shooting their assault rifles..and not a single hit. Firespanw moves a bit closer and fires off 2 shots. Both miss. Le crap.

The alien return fire, but he's an even worse shot then we are. Frustreated, he charges forward, despite having two plasma pistols.

All out shots miss. All our reaction fire misses. Only Melvin manages a shot trough the ships hull, but the bullet lost quite a bit of punch because of that.
The aleins return fire hits Patriot and Dekker.

Our return fire kills it however (shotguns at close range = murder).
Firespawn and me whip out the healing kits.

The last two aliens are runnign around hte upper houses and we follow. Alien return fire again hits Patriot, but tha't not enough to stop him. Most of our troops are out of position, the alien being obstructed byhhte house of hte UFO...we score a few grazing wounds on it only.

the last alien charges at us from the house. We again set up a fireing line, but luck is not with us, since we use of all of our TU's and only manage ot land 2 grazing shots.
The alin is predicatably innacurate and this one too seems to like the charging tactic. The next turn, the fire from our assault rifles brings it down, Dekker having the privelige of hte last burts.

By now I figure all aliens must be in this building. I leave Headdie and Melvin outside, as their weapons would be of little use inside the house. I prepare everyone else to stom the house.


Sparda runs right up to the alein and introduces it's face to sabot slugs (should have gone with flechette..those are 3 times deadleir early game)

Me and Dekker(or was it Patriot?) are the only two currently inside the house. A burts from each of us cuts the second alein down.
We detect the third one on the roof/balcony, hiding behind a table. Since no one can get a shot at it from this angle, I move Headde and Melin further away into a better fireing position. However, we losoe track of the alien.

For the next two turns everyone (except the aforementioned two) slowly and catioulsly moves towards hte stairs to the second floor.
And then suddenly the alien appears down.

There's no stairs or any way to get down, so this must be a bug. Unfortunately for the alien, he dropped from the roof right in front of Headde and Melvin. Melving puts a sniper round into its chest, Headde follows with a rocket. The alien is vaporized.

We split into 2 4-man teams.
ME, Sparda, Headdie and Firespawn take the streets.
Melvin, Patriot, Rodo and Dekker go around the back gardens. And we run into aliens almost immediately.

2 aliens visible in the upper left house. 1 in the garden. The one in the garden throws a grenade and wounds the entire group. Melvin and Patriot put it down with return fire.

The second team moves up

Only for one alien to go behing the house, throw a grenade at this feet and somehow survive and return. Must be smoking some shrooms.
One more alien appears. We now have 3 alien in the upper left part of the map.
Headdie attempts to hit one, but his missile misses, goes trough the window and destroys the TV in the house. He still claims Twilight was on that TV, and it was deliberate.

One of the alien came to clsoe to Sparda, who shotguns it to the face and then runs behind cover.
The alien return fire doesn't score a single hit.

Finally, on our turn we again push forward. I took a HMG back and my supressive fire kills one, while Firespawn finishes the last one. (at least I think. I'm not sure if Headdie fired another missile at this point or not)

And our adventures continue!
Getting tired of all the fighter-types UFO' (they WILL go after the dropship if it's close) I dispatch Stilleto 1 to intercept one. I haven't installed polymer armor and I fear the worst. Still, Crizza manages to bring it down, altough our interceptors is heavily damaged in the process. Our first kill of an armed UFO. I begin construction of another small hangar. We're gonna need it.

We deploy on another small map and immediately engage the enemy:

Sparda is not with us on this one, beign promoted in the last mission he's taking a break. Ravenhole is taking his place. Sadly, I didn't take notes and memory of this mission is murky, so take this names of who killed whom with a grain of salt.

The alien closest to us is swiftly taken down by combined fire from Firespawn and Patriot.


The rest aling themselves to either shoot at the alein by he house or the one in the middle of the crash site. Headdeis first missile misses. And due to my oversight Ravenhome is left without any TU's, and few cna come to his aid.

After 2 pot shots and drainign everyoen who could shoot out of TU's, the last burst from my HMG manages to bring the alein down, as if by some miracle.

The last alien opens fire and hits both patriot and ravenholme. We quickly move in to heal them.
Our return fire misses, but the alein runs behind the house to cower (afer scoring anotoher wound on Patriot). We use this breathing room to heal everyone up.

The aline finally pops back from the hosue, but this time falls down under a torrent of fire.

And equipping of Skydancer 1 wiht Polymer armor is compelte. I immediately send it to shoot down the next fighter we detect. Crizza again manages ot shoot it down, again returning wiht a bange-up craft. The armor was a good investment!

So we deply on a smallish farm and immediately come into contact with an alien. Our fire keeps missing..Even headdies rocket only grazed the sucka.

The rest of hte team fans out and we run into mhoar ALIENS. Firespawn in particular has a close encounter.

Yet it's not close neough for him, as he charges into melee range, unloading a pitol burts at point-blank. That doesn't drop the alien, so he stabs it.
The sucka is tough and it's still standing. And no one is in range to come....except for Dekker, who doesn't have a celar line of sight and only enough TU's for a single shot. which he takes...and hit Firespawn.

Oh.....crap.


However, the alien seems to be confused by Firespawns display of crazy and runs around like headless chicken, curving in a fetal position by the door.

Two more aliens pop up, one on the far end of hte barn, one on the second floor on the house in the other corner. The alien fire is good for a change. Rodo and Retsof get hit. So does Headdie.

Yet it doesn't kill the alien. The tree suffered most of the damage. Dekkers bursts were also stopped by the tree. I make a mental note to make our fighter armor out of wood.

Yeah, trees are kinda hard to understand.
I recall loosing more than one soldier that was crouched behind a tree in those "little-forest" maps, the shots got right through the frikking tree every single time!, and then you go to this map and you find a tree that's like a fortress :doubt:

I'll zip it and put it up a bit later. But it's simple really
 .pk3 files (in the base folder) are basicly rars. You can just extract the 0ufo folder. The files inside are just text files (don't mind the .ufo extension) and can be easily edited.
Just be sure to remove the 0 when you extract it, the folder structure shoudl be UFOAIDirectory/base/ufo/ (files go in here)

Stupid alien almost blows himself and his buddy with a plasma grenade, before moving up and killing a civilian with a blade. Our fireing line takes it out.

What follows is 3 missions wrought with peril at every step, a huge number of clsoe calls and a LOT of luck.


Guess what - we researched Kerrablade. I'm focusing on taman autopsy and UFO Theroy, so we can get sweet alien materials (and we cna get monomolecular blades) and Laz0rs.

Aliens are increasign their activity, more and more terror missions are popping up. Our first mission seez Dekker falling out of hte dropship (actually, due to some bug he's been placed alone, next to the alien Harvester...but hey)

This is gonna be a tough one. Close quarters combat. For this mission I pulled Headdie out and put Melvin back in.

Except we can barely move. 3 alien on the upper walkways open fire on the entrance, spending all TU's on shooting.

After a lengthy shoot-out, we finalyl fin. the superior accuracy of our rifles wins out, but we don't come out of it untouched - Rodo gettign the worst of it. More healing follows.

We cna hear more shooting, but cna't determine where it's coming from. The team splits.
Ravenholme, Patriot and Rodo take left, the rest go right. Firespawn and Dekker split from the second team to go down. We discover 3 aliens down.

I have to admin that I had to re-try that mission. A redicolous bugglitch happened, in which Headdie unloaded a full burt of flechette ammo at an unarmored alien. Point blank. 100% hit chance. All hit. Alien blood flying. No damage to the alien.  :eek2:
I was going "WTF!?!?!?!" when that same alien killed headdie on his turn. The flechette burst is supposed to do 460+ damage. The Taman has like 130 health.
Still have no idea how or why it happened.

While our team was flying back, another terror mission hit..In the US of A.

Our dropship only landed back in base for 5 minutes to refuel (and so our tropps can take a potty break) and immediately continued to Juno, alaska.

It cold..and I should have given everyone arctic cammo. But that doesn't matter. We detect 3 aliens next to the UFO Harvester


The aliens hang around the front of the ship and open fire with everything. Dekker, who is positioned near the rear of the dropship gets hit twice. As I try to move him back he gets hit once again by alien reaction fire. IT turns out all shots are grazing ones and he's jsut a tad below half health. Firespawn and Melvin whip out healign kits.

Retsof opens up with the grenade launcher with on of hte aliens who came in clsoer and kills it.

We detect anohter alien behind the UFO.
Sparda and firespawn move towards it, using the trees nad boxes for cover. Their weapon ranges are too short for the shootout with the main alien group anyway. Malvin takes opsition insdie hte dropship to snipe.

Two turns of shooting follow. Spada has made it to the large container, Retsof and firespawn lagging behind. The reast have been fireing full bore from everyting. Constant auto-fire. Few hits scored.
Rhodo has the best hit-ratio, but only because he's using auto-sweep so he's spraying bullets everywhere. Dekker gets back int othe fight and his bur finished off the wounded alien.

The aliens return fire hits Ravenholme dead center. Twice. He is in critical state and I move him back into the dropship. The alien at the back of the ufo finally walked down and into Spardas reaction fire. That stopped him long enough for Sparda to finish him off next turn.

Retsof attempts a 3-round burst on the last alien next to the small water/oil tower, but all 3 of his grenades collide with the scaffolding. Yet the reast of the team compansates with a hail of bullets.

Everyone reached the rank of Lance-Corporal in these missions... Expect for me, Patriot and Sparda (methinks) who hold captain rank. Will have to double-check.

We were mindin' our own buissnes, cllin and relaxin,
when  UFO land near our radar tower in New Africa...and it's up to no good in that neighborhood.
We sent one little dropship out and the aliens got scared, and said "we'll send a fighter to intercept you up in the air"

So we turned the dropship around and sent fighters of our own, and the alien fighter was the one to go down.

Be carefull with those missions far away from the base, that thing that happened before with the fighter appearing out of nowhere to hunt your dropship is a dangerously repeating scenario.

Thankfully, I can send a Saracen as an escort. It has the range. Too bad it's worse than a Stilleto in a dogfight.

So we go in to Australia. Long flight and an iffy mission. A gigantic farm, but I pre-emptively equipped both Sparda and Firespawn with sniper rifles (as they have the best sniper skill aside from Melvin...I really need a dedicated sniper damit. Bad rolls with initial recruits) and I gave headdie a bazooka.

At least the rest of the team was moving around towards the barn. All the aliens we detected are high up..and we see...plasma rifles. And alien light armor! Uh-oh!


I move everyone up.. Me and Rhodo enter the barn and wait by the other entrance for an alien to come near.
Retsof takes position behind the barrels, Patriot (or was it Dekker?) stay at the lower end of the barn to heal up Headddie, who got hit by plasma fire.
The snipers take up positions to the right of the barn.

Near our second base. and only 0.5 days left till the second large hangar (and dropship for the second team) is done!

I'm beginning to hate the aliens. REALLY hate em.


Anywhoo, we deploy and move forward cautiously, but for several turns, no alien contact. Since Firespawn was taking a shortcut trough the house and civies blocked him, we kinda waited a bit for him and formed a battle line..but no aliens popped up.

We moved forward - very, very cautiously. It took a few more turns to get to this position here:

and then they started coming. First a single Taman who tossed a plsma grenade, that hurt me and retsof a bit, but he was quickly put down.

It turns out Flechette grenades are almost useless against them. Retsof empited the entire clip without bringing one down. My flamer brought one down but the other was still there..and I had no TU's left.
In the panic that ensued some friendly fire happened. I got hit by a stay bullet as everyone that could was shooting at the damn spiders. Firespawn and Ravneholme eventually killed it.

I have autoed 2 mission (1 by our team and 1 by the second). but there's been a few things happening.

First of all Skydancer 1 and 2 have shot down another UFO fighter and we butchered the alines there. Report as follows:

Middle eastern town. Lots of cover.We detect 4 aliens immediately. 1 inside the small store, 1 on the roof of the house and 2 next to the UFO.
We scatter immediately. Patriot is still wounded from the last mission - so he takes cover behind the house

The month is done - so by selling all of the excess gear, ufo's and plus the funding recieved, I begin work on our third base "Area 51"

Two downed ufo's two missions. One for each team.

Team 2 at this point only has Patriot and Headdie in it, the rest are scrubs. But they kick ass non the less.
Armed with a lot of sniper and assult rifles, they drilled the alines full of holes.

Team 1 takes a detour to handle a terror mission in an industrial area.

So I've DL'd the game, and now I could write a little review...

The good:
-Generally the gameplay is fun. While it's turn based and appears rather slow, I did run into situations where my MG switches to pistol and shoots because it takes less TU's than aiming the big and bulky machine gun. Same thing when someone runs out of ammo in the middle of a firefight- sometimes the secondary ends the battle.
-While the story in the intro sucks a bit, the creators put lots of effort into the details about the aliens, weapons and equipment.
-The aliens themselves are pretty alien, and their weapons differ a lot from what the humans use. This allows some variety in terms of tactics.
-The game is pretty intuitive, some of the hints are helpful.
-The AI is done pretty neatly, except for one ugly thing. Aliens sometimes take the high ground, sometimes they flank, sometimes they ambush or sneak around, and sometimes they just rush massively against a sole defender.
-I wonder when the aliens get their own heavy power armor, rocket launchers, heavy machine guns and snipers....

The bad:
-If one of your soldiers is behind a fence, wall or any other obstacle that reaches to their chest, they will most likely shoot the obstacle, firing from the hip, instead of taking aim and putting the barrel above it. This is a brilliant way to get rid of your rocket launcher dude if he/she is an @$$#*(&.
-The accuracy of guns is generally a bit too low. It makes sense to charge across an open field to get an alien within range of the 'nade thrower (and the shots that bounce reach rather far). This alone turns down the amount of planing needed to defeat the enemy. Snipers also seem to miss aimed shots rather often from as little as 50-100 meters, which pretty much forces to charge and get the team close to the aliens.

The ugly:
-If you have any injured soldiers, feel free to take them on the next mission. Just keep them out of the gunfire until they cure each other using the endlessly healing medkits.
-Keeping the injured soldiers in the hospital only causes them to be out of action for a while.
-Aliens don't seem to seek cover unless they panic. Even when I have 5 soldiers firing at them they just stand there and try to shoot back.

Lots of action for both teams.

I did auto some battles, but here's a brief rundown:

TEAM2

Jean-Luc was spawned next to the UFO and it took 3 turns for everyone else to catch up. Enemeis were bloodspiders and Taman.

Thankfully, the sniper(Melvin, Garrus) and assault rifle(Patriot, Jean-Luc) fire did manage to soften or kill some.
Rodo and Lapponte finished the rest (flamer + grenade launcher)


As you cna see, there was plenty of action, with both teams out on the field at the same time.

And at this point I succumb to my weakness and retry the mission. Why?

Because Headdie, the ever popular plasma magnet, go killed. Again. Why he got killed? Because he was very wounded from a previous battle and I forgot about it. Under normal circumstances, he would have survived the battle.

And Headdie almsot got killed again. The aliens were gunning for him.

The narrow coridor and all aliens attempting to use the main entrance works to our advantage.
4 dead aliens litter the floor and we press forward. But this is when our first real casualty of this war happens

As we move towards the base exist, a shot comes from behind, hitting Garrus. We turn around to find an alein sneakely waiting. Melvins shots doesn't kill it. Garrus, wounded, atempts his luck, but the alien returns fire....the already injured Garrus succumbs :(

Patriot riddels the alien in revenge.
Alas, poor Garrus, we knew him not very well. But his brother Barrus is eager to take his place.



The Saracen attmpted to intercept the alien fighter alone, bu was outmatched. Still, Mongoose managed to evade the alien long enough to bring the interceptor back home, altough criticly damaged. The damaged alein craft was finished off by the bases missile defences. Team 2 moves in to secure it.

The next two aliens are weakend by reaction fire and finished off by Laponte. We got our own injuries at this point.

Now for hte good news:
- we have several Laser Rifles now and ammo for it.
- research on Alein light armor is done, and this opens our researhc of Nanocomposite armor

- research on alien materials almsot done.

You do realize you misspelled Laporte, right?

I'd go with nanocomposite armor for your next research, and not just because I'm the guy in front with the shotgun.  Headdie needs better armor too if he wants to survive being a plasma magnet.

If you don't bring it home shorting out and held together with duct tape, you're doing it wrong.

@Mongoose - the Saracen litterly came in with jsut a tiny sliver of the health bar left.

Player mroe missions. Right till the end of hte month. Again, plenty of shooting and stuff, but still no new enemeis.
I guess it's triggred by alien and UFO research, which  I have been neglecting a bit :P

No new casualties - altough we did come very clse a few times. Report will follow.

We've been shootign down UFO's and I've been selling everything I could (inclusign alien items), so that caused nation happines to go up. That also caused quite a few missions.

Looks great, doesn't it? One of hte scrubs kills hte alien behind our dropship immediately. Full auto at that range (2 squares) - deadly.


Barrus detects an alien in the cow/horse holding pen. It shoots him 2 times and gets out:

Everoyone runs in to help. Barrus finally kills hte damn thing, and the rest move to heal them both..who have less than 10 HP left!!!!!

Patriot etects another alien and opens fire. He gets some hits in, but the broken wood is i nthe way. With only 4 TU's left, we duck behind the wall.

One suick and simple mission, and hte trip back to base sees the dropship followed by a UFO. But...3 SAM sites around hte base and the UFO literaly crashes on the base.

Ok Dekker - laser rifle and incendiarey grenades it is. And so far, you, Ravenholme and Firespawn are still in Team1.

In other news there has been a lot of promotions - especially among the n00bs. I am no longer the highest ranking officer - Retsof now outranks me (Warrant Officer). I have to remedy that.

As soon as Heavy Laser research is done, Nanocopmosite aarmor and Heavy Pistol are next.

Also, Rising Sun (4 workshops) is churing out Laser and EM rifles, so we will be seeing more usage of those weapons.

I jsut noticed Firespawn is missing. I'm looking around and i couldnt' find it. and finally I figured he died during one of the auto-resolve missions! How is that possible? I always checked for casualites - 8 surviors! is hte screen bugged????

I re-played the last 15 days, and we're back where we were. Things went a bit different and the aliens are becoming mroe and more dangerous and more and more IRRITATING.

That said, I started production of nano-comosite armor. We also got Heavy Lasers.
and soon I'll have a Heavy Pistol for you.


Seems auto-resolve HATES close-comabt ppl. If I equip you wiht long-range weapons, auto-resolve doesn't kill you. Go figure.

Sorry for hte lack of updates. Game needs balancing as the alien activity is becoming redicolous, and the aliens MUCH more dangerous...and I cna't auto-resolve everything, as auto-resovle generally leads to injuries even on victory.

It's not uncommon now so start a crashed UFO mission with a heavily armored alien with reaction fire night next to you.

I will post some screenshots, but suffice to say there have been a lot of battles and deaths - all newcomers wihout a proper callsign.
Nanocomposite armor is entering circulation, Firespawn got a heavy pistol and Stun Rod, we can now produce plasma grenades (for grenade launcher) and nca use alien plasma weaponry.

We have another base in the Revolutionary countries (south america) and all other bases are expanded to hte max. Area 51 has it's own researhc nad production wing, HQ is pure research with just 1 workshop, and Red Sun is nothing but workshops. Dismantling UFO's and building things take a lot of time, and it's nto hte lack of buildings, but manpower that's hte problem.

Money isn' a problem anymore. With 2 UFO yards full, I now sell everything, and with the frequency of missions and UFOs's ourfunding is now breaking the 1Mil a month. That's without selling 200+ plasma pistols that accumulate inside the base.

I have literaly started ignoring crashed UFO's (that get shot down by our SAM sites). We have started research on a new interceptor class (finally).
Still no Coilguns or XAW95, but we won' see those before the aleins bring in Needlers and Particle Weaponry.

A close call for our dropship - was attacked by an alein fighter while over the atlantic. Good thbng we scrambled our Stilletos. It was a VERY close call, not only becaue the dropship barely came back in one piece, but also because stilletos were barely in range!

Laser weapontry for aircraft and base defences has been perfected, and our first new aircrcaft should be operational shortly (I really should have tackled that before)
Ortnoks now come in a heavily armored variety - and they are exceptionally difficult to kill. Full auto fr oma HMG can't bring a sucker down!

I'm honestly tihking of merging it back to two teams to everyone get get a decent amount of action.


As you can see by the above numbers, I have been autoing and avoiding missions just to move things along at a more sane pace.

You want a plasma blaster, flamer or a HMG Rodo? Heavy Needler and XAW95 won't be available till the game sends out some more advanced alien troops.

I had you carrying a sniper rifle for a while, since your char has a very high score with it (actually, your char has all-around great weapon scores).
Close-combat fighters are penalized because of lack of proper late-game weapons.

I can give you a heavy pistol like Firespawn has (hes in a different team anyway). Or I can go back to the shotgun. Not very effective against armored aliens mind you.

Why hasn't a Warhammer 40K mod been made from this engine, seeing as it is in fact open source? I'm thinking it would be quite simple to implement many of the rules and aspects from the tabletop game to this one... you know, if the world was perfect.

You can't get the coilgun without it.

You find hte base by following UFO or having good radar coverage.

It will take some time for research to finish.

At the current point in time we have 6 bases, 3 strike teams, s***loads of SAM sites and bucketloads of money.

The New Starchaser interceptors are swell and I'm building them as fast as possible, but they cost redicolously high in alien materials (to the point of absurdity..the default cost for a starchaser is 7000 alien materials... one Harvester, when dissasembled, given you 800. Do the math!) I tweaked it down to more sane levels.

Furthermore, I'm playing with a new nightly build that normalizes the number of alien attacks per month, so we're not drowning in aliens anymore.

Your loadout is as potent as it can get.
You have a hand cannon (that is pretty much a one-handed sniper rifle) and a monomolecular knife. Both can damage the toughest of opponents. Plus you got the highest close combat skill of anyone. You're a murderdeath machine. I didn't make screenshots, but during one mission, you alone held a position against 3 aliens and you killed em all.

The others are now catching up with you.

They still would have won. Most of those are heavy armor wearing alien. A full auto with a HMG is not enough to kill one.

I managed to kill 4 before I lost power, but I don't anyone would have survived the return fire.
