Hey guys,

well, I'ld like to change my VOlcano 9's heatsink...because it's too hot in there...about 55C for an XP1900+..something wrong right? What do you think about one of those 2 heatsinks:

Thermalright SLK-800 Copper Heatsink

Thermalright AX-478 Copper Heatsink

Do you really think my temp will be very lower than now with a new heatsink? Because, if it really helps, I could slow down my cpu fan...too noisy in there...my comp is about 90db:mad:

I'm putting a Glacialtech Igloo 2410 Pro in mine. Aluminum, but it seems like an efficient heatsink, and its designed for up to 2600+. Not sure how well it works, I'll give you a review of it tomorrow after I get my upgrades hooked up (I'm waiting for a case fan).

Before you go out and buy another heatsink, you might want to consider re-arranging the devices in your case.  Make sure the IDE ribbon cables aren't obstructing airflow.  You might even want to consider buying rounded cables.  (you can make em yourself, but I don't recommend that you do it unless you really know what you're doing and very good with an exacto blade.

Secondly, you can go into your BIOS and set the core voltage yourself to the correct value for your processor. (sometimes the BIOS will set a higher value than normal if set to "auto").

If you leave the cover off of your case, how low does it run?

by leaving my case open, I get around 46 on my cpu and 32 in the case...it's near 21-20 in the room when I close the door and run the comp on idle for about 10min to reach those temps

46?!  Thats way too hot.  Did you try lowering the core voltage like I asked?  I saved myself 10 degrees by going from 1.75V (set by BIOS when I had it set to 'auto') to 1.6V.  Getting rounded cables couldn't hurt either.  You even might want to do as I suggested for Thunder and cut out a hole in the sidepanel near your CPU and mount an 80mm fan there to help draw out the hot air.  (if you're concerned about dust, you can put a used dryer sheet between the fan and the hole.  That works quite well, and can even make your PC smell good. )

With it running THAT hot (55C) with the case closed, that definitely indicates an airflow problem.  The best heatsink in the world won't do you a bit of good if your airflow sucks eggs.

ok I'll check the Vcore...I'm around 1.8V for an Athlon XP...is that too high?

by the way, i have a palomino so the vcore at the default is 1.75V...can I put 1.7V without any damages or problems?

dunno, check the technical specifications.

shouldn't do any damage at first (i'm not saying do it though) but it may affect it in the long run

i hate my power supply...i selected manual and 1.75V in the BIOS (can't select below 1.75) and I still at 1.8...I think my psu is unsuffiscent

There's your problem - 32C in your case means either you're not getting proper airflow or the temperature sensor is out of whack (something to take note of if you're using an Asus mobo). That means only 14C difference between the CPU and surrounding air. 55C isn't a major problem as the cores won't fail until 90C, however there is room for improvement, which probably won't happen without a look at the cooling arrangements for the case. The Volcano 9 can handle that CPU, normal or overclocked, just fine, so no need to replace it.
