First 50 Things Setekh Should Do With His New Network
So in preparation for the broadband we're going to get installed in the next month or so, I decided to network our home laptop and PC and test out if I could establish internet connection sharing. It works! :D

But now that I have this network, I don't really have many ideas what to do on it. Good network games? Other suggestions? I'm pretty open. ;)

i once had a home tetwork but it was really quite useless.  get yourself a pda with a terminal services client and you can have some serious fun. imagine posting on hlp whilst defecating in the john :D seriously home networks arent really worth the trouble of having cables strung everywere, and go wireless its not worth the expense.  even if you get a cheap network up and running, all the time you will spend troubleshooting it will make it a total nightmare, hackers see more computers on your network they are gonna dig around and see what they can get into. but hey at least you can play lan games.

[color=66ff00]I prefer the term 'multitasking' myself.

Anyhow, if you set up a network properly the only computer visible should be the one that directly connects to the net.

A lot of routers these days have a firewall built in which basically means that only the firewall is visible to the outside world.

I know the principles but lack the tech. speak to describe it properly. Need to figure out linux firewalls for myself at some point but that requires editing iptables and the like which I'm not too read up on.

Setekh should set up an advanced AI to monitor network activity, and watch as it developes it's own sentience and slaughters him in HALO multi every time he plays. :p

Play networked games together...

Like something on ZSNES or maybe play through Quake 2....  Or have some cool HW2 or Red Alert Battles....

And you can easily make backups of all your files..  (just copy to other computer)

For some reason, AoE2 is amazingly fun on a LAN.

Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Cheers, particularly for the words of warning Nuke. I would've appreciated them more 24 hours ago though, before I went through all the troubleshooting. ;) Turns out XP is pretty good at establishing all its networking stuff (file, print, connection sharing) and stuff on its own - and yes, it's all firewalled up.

Don't envy me yet, Hippo. :) Last time I tried to get broadband set up (a few years ago - the oldest HLPers will remember), I faced enough problems to have me tearing out my hair for a year and a day. That's why I'm still on dialup! But hopefully all will go to plan this time - monthly plans have gotten pretty cheap these days, too.

FS, Age of Empires, SS2... *adds them to the list* I'd better get some friends over. :)

Best LAN game I've ever played, is AVP2. It's fantastic for any number of players. If you have large groups though, go for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's got great team and class based action and it's free, to boot.

Jedi Academy is loads of fun, and saber combat is a much better test of skill than merely shooting guns at someone

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

i had a major problem with lan games. it was getting people to play with me. all the players i could ever get were kids and it was no chalenge. id ice hem in mechwarrior 4 no problem.  the only exception was when i played doom with my neice, who was 4 at the time, she was actually pretty good. so as usefull as my network was i did the only thing i could think of, i sold my other comuter and bought some weed. :thepimp:

Play World of Warcraft... ;)
Although I suggest buying a hub or a router (latter with WLAN capability recommended). No need to mess with internet connection sharing and keep the computer turned on which is sharing the connection.
