I have a grandmother who lives south of Boston. Nice little Cape house (Cape being the style, not the location). People have bought houses nearby for around $300000, I think.

Bloody hell.

  I want to work over there, then.  My cousin moved to Houston (obviously a different cost of living, but still); he sold his tiny wee 2 bedroom house in Airdrie and bought a monster house in Texas with a huge backyard and losts of bedrooms, with money spare.  It's kerayzee.... a £100k ($150-180k) would barely buy you a 2 floor flat in Glasgow.

Yea, in houston all you need to get a hugeass house (3 stories, 4 beds 5 bath) and backyard is about 200k - 300k. The schools in the area are some of houstons best and newest. There hundreds of new suburbs being built on the outskirts that provide a unique opertunity for cheap housing. I would live out there if it werent for my close ties to friends around here (i live in the inner older suburbs.) Still, I have a nice house at that.

I'm almost scared to mention house prices in London.
And the infuriating part is that it is NOT because of lack of houses, it is real-estate Merchants deliberately not putting houses on the market to push the prices of their other ones up.

Let me put it this way, 200K will just about get you a Bedsit in the Suburbs.

Is this in pounds? The insanity... :eek2:
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

[color=66ff00]Yes indeed.

If you're brave you can get cheaper houses over here; there is a direct inverse correlation between the cost of the house and its proximity to 'flashpoint areas' i.e. those where sectarian violence is most likely to occur.

Aye, well Londons in a class of it's own really.  Closest I know of is Edinburgh; someone famously sold a garage (that is, a single car garage with a door) in the city centre for about 50k; single car lockups are something like 25-32k in my 5 second search............
