Re: Terrorists listen to the Clash!
A couple of my climbing mates got 'questioned' and had some climbing gear confiscated because the airline in question thought they might try to hijack the plane with the stuff they had clipped onto their rucksacks.

Not exactly on topic but it's just interesting what airports define as threatening.

I saw a plastic spork in the Stansted 'dangerous items' bin.  Breathed easier that flight, I tell you.

Despite that, er, there was a restaurant in the departures lounge with cutlery.

Back home, the buses went up in flashes,
the Irish tomb was drenched in blood.
Spanish bombs shatter the hotels.
My señorita’s rose was nipped in the bud.

The shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?" -George Bernard Shaw

I take it you missed the story about the guy who had his Medal of Honor taken away?

I mean, if you can't trust somebody who's recieved the highest decoration that can be given to a member of the US military, who can you trust?

A few years back, a guy I know was flying business class. They served the meal with plastic knives and metal, long-tonged forks. He showed one to a stewardess and mentioned how he could do a heck of a lot more damage to someone's throat using the fork than a knife. The stewardess didn't really have anything to say. :nervous:

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: Terrorists listen to the Clash!
Do not underestimate the power of the plastic knife (or the spork). This was demonstrated years ago by my mate in high school going "These things are useless, you couldn't cut anything with them." He proceeded to demonstrate his point by running the plastic knife across his hand. Three seconds later he was spraying blood all over his dinner. :nervous:

And he wasn't hauled off the plane after it had been diverted to the nearest airfield? What a shocking lack of judgement from all the security services involved!
