I wish I had a machine with a faster CPU than I had RAM. They just don't make affordable 2gig AthlonXPs yet.  

As a side note, you can get Win9x to use much more, Setekh, if you tweak with the system.ini and some registry settings. Up to about 768mb, I believe.

ME is 9x. Win95, 98, 98SE, and ME all share the same basic kernel and OS design ideals. I don't know that I would ever recommend XP to anyone, but I would recommend going to at least 2k if you want a more solid machine, and you want to push your machine up to a gig or better of RAM.

Heh! Oops, didn't realise that. I didn't really look that far... but I did want to toss off 9x, because its stability sucked. And XP was a pleasant experience - it casts off its DOS legacies impressively, and it also has great driver support straight out of the box - I hit the ground running at high-res + high colours, with sound and Orb and printer/scanner working perfectly.  

PS. Yep, ME was pretty much 98 Third Edition.

IMHO, SE sucked, and ME sucks even more. I'm still running 98 (all the latest patches, of course), haven't reinstalled in over two years, and the stability is great. Well, great by Microsoft standards anyway.

I'm thinking about getting WinXP (using ME right now and the stability is pretty poor) but have not made up my mind yet; what are the benefits to it?

Here are a few specific questions I have; some of you probably know about this stuff:

Does XP make better usage of system RAM? (I have 512MB)

How is the DOS application compatibility (I would like to be able to run some older games), and if it isn't too good, is a dual-boot setup alongside ME possible?

Does one need to buy a seperate copy for every computer in the house?

What's the deal with this "online activation" stuff? I have heard that the corporate edition does not have this thing; how much more does that one cost?

1) It makes a hell of a lot better use of RAM, and besides, you can prioritize programs to determine how much CPU they get.

2) No DOS compatibility. Older windows games may not work, especially if they explicitly detect for NT style OSes.

3) You'll need a seperate copy for each machine in the house unless you cheat. The corporate version has the same thing. Its called Windows Product Activation, and it basicly fingerprints your computer's hardware, generates a challenge key, you give the key to Microsoft, and they give you a response key that unlocks your software. I don't use XP series software because of that. I'll stick to my Win2k, which is XP without the fancy schmancy pretty facelift.

I tried to upgrade to XP and before I started it said my cable modem would not work.

I checked for updates and none have been made.

I will stick with ME.  I have few problems with it (unlike Win 95).

I agree about not wanting to give MS any information.

Actually the corporate editions are pre-activated, as are OEM versions.
They just have Cd-Key thing, if i understand it correctly.

OEM, I think you're right about--until you change enough hardware that the fingerprint changes enough to require a new key. *heh* Its an evil system, and I don't think its going to stop piracy.

Considering how many pre-activated copies that are available i have to agree.

Also if you change so much in your system (6 components, if i remeber correctly) that it will force you to reactivate, you might as well reinstall. If your copy is pre-activated.

Yeah I would agree with that; the determined pirates will simply download cracks (I bet there are hundreds out there for WinXP) while everyone else has to go through the trouble of activation.
