Greetings to everybody. I'm new here and I have installed freespace using "Turey's" installer. I was led here on my search for a better space sim game. I'm not a hardcore player but I did play X-wing vs Tie fighter way back and also Freelancer lately.

I'm now at the training missions but the model for the instructor and my ship does not have skins. They show up as white with black stripes, like a zebra.

I'm not sure if this is a graphics card issue (nvidia fx-5500) since the model shows fine at the lower left box, but the main ship is not.

I have attached a screenshot and I hope that you can help me resolve this.

Use the 3.6.10 build that came with the Installer.

And update your grahpics card's drivers.

My video card driver is updated. And I do not have this experience when I play Freelancer.

Also when I selected fs2_open_3_6_10-20071007T.exe from the launcher, the model in mini screen on the lower left portion lost its skin too.

After browsing around the posts here, I tried the No Mod suggestion and rebooted the computer just to be safe and upon starting the game again, its all fixed.

I wouldn't call that a fix. It merely circumvents the problem. Did you happen to read this stickied thread? It would be preferrable to get the MediaVPs working on your end since without them the game looks so... retail.

Lobo, I thought I had the latest driver... I downloaded and installed the Nvidia 175.16 driver and you are right, the game looks a LOT better.

Now I just have to do away the bad habit of using the mouse/keyboard (courtesy of Freelancer) and actually learn how to fly ships using the gamepad.

It wasn't really "fixed," though, as Lobo pointed out right afterwards. Besides that, The Powers That Be have made it rather clear that beam-only posts are essentially the equivalent of spam...and the Welcome Speech is right out, considering that the only people who reference it anymore have no idea what most of it means.
