Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
A flawed movie, definitely not the best I've seen recently, but entertaining nonetheless.  However, I'm beginning to think all sci-fi screen- and game- writers should have to take a mandatory course in genetics.  I inevitably have to switch off my brain whenever any of popular media these days talks biology because, despite the information being so easy to obtain, they always get it brutally wrong.

I was reading The Last Days of Foxhound last month (well, it's a trimonthly source of entertainment for me), and I think Psycho Mantis would have to agree with you, in any case.

Something tells me we should have brought Michael Crichton back to life and made him write the film. Or at least, the writers would have taken a hint at what Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett did for the first Alien...

^ Give a kid a stick and tell him to beat up his enemies, he'll do it without a second thought. Give a kid a book and tell him to defeat his opponent, and he'll read the book, defeat the other's mind, and smack him on top of the head. Give a kid a flower, he'll force his opponent to eat it.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
Fun film, certainly the kind you want to talk about after seeing it.

Certainly was gorgeous, while Avatar was impressive visually it still looked like a video game, where Prometheus looked real.

Michael Fassbender was great as David, and actually if they decided to retell Lawrence of Arabia he could probably do a great job.

I was a little disappointed with Weyland's arc.  WY was always looking to control and understand the zenomorphs in the prior films, Peter Weyland just looking to see if the Engineers would add some miles to his ticker seemed like such a let down, especially after the badass TED trailer he did earlier.  I 'd rather them had been shooting for something grandiose like seizing their technology or looking to capture an Engineer.  I thought that was probably the weakest part of the film for me.  A better objective and a more thorough operation that failed in the face of the Engineers would have served better.

The rip tide thing with the ship was pretty dumb, and a pathetic end to Miss Vickers.  I was rather hoping the icy ***** would have survived, though I suppose if she wasn't smart enough to run perpendicular to the line of travel of the Engineer ship then she probably would have run Weyland Industries into the red.

Course I laughed when my friend blurted out "The lowest common denominator! That's why they want to kill us!"  When the biologist and geologist met their dumb idiotic ends.

Yeah, playing with odd mysterious alien creatures is a sure sign that you're too stupid to live.  They both had it coming.

EDIT: This movie just reconfirms what I know: in the future, nobody will be Genre Savvy.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
Just watched it yesterday. I also enjoyed the film, but there were definitely some off moments for me. StarSlayer pretty much covered everything, but one thing I want to point out:

The rip tide thing with the ship was pretty dumb, and a pathetic end to Miss Vickers.

I had so much expectation for her as a character. Besides David and Elizabeth, Vickers looked like the only other character that had something going for her. But instead, they killed her in the dumbest way possible. I suspended my disbelief for much of the ridiculousness, but that scene disappointed me greatly.

Still, I was okay with the rest of the movie. It was a good movie to watch with friends, I felt.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
Just saw it today.

I'd say it's a lot like Another. Nice scenery/setting/atmosphere, gratuitous death scenes, and (unintentionally) rather comedic - ending off with a hilarious sequence involving nothing less than pure distilled idiocy from the cast. I haven't seen much horror, but is this how it usually goes? :P

Nothing much to say except if the crew was a sample from anywhere between average to the more intelligent portion of humanity, the Engineers shouldn't have bothered worrying about killing all humans. I mean, they'd happily off themselves given the opportunity. Big Rolling Rings do a good of a job as bodyhorrorbioweapons, after all.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
So I believe one of the drafts of the film became available.  You can read it here.  After going through it I think I prefer the draft.  Specifically the involvement of Weyland and generally smarter actions of the characters overall.  While the final version might have been a bit more thought invoking in terms of the human condition the draft certainly seems more tight and less prone to fridge logic.  I'd like to see what people think.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
the movie sucked, and reading about how good it might have been wont improve my opinion of it any. this is what im starting to call the battlestar effect. people are so incredibly scrapped for ideas they will just fall back on tried and true approaches. like making a massive depressing cluster****, kill almost everyone, and not really solve any problems.

battlestar kinda ruined scifi ever since it ended. not because it was good by comparison but because everyone just kinda sliced off a piece of its rotting corpse and designed their new fiction around the same atmosphere. so you get all this hurr im like galacica durr drivel.

Anything that's big will have that effect.

Can't even blame the show for that. (Well you can blame it for a lot, but not for that ;)); it's a systemic issue.

i watched it and thought it was utter rubbish, just glad i rented it and didnt buy it. I was expecting something far better from ridley scott. He should of keep to his original idea and not to have made it a prequel to alien.

Re: Prometheus: ahhhh what the ****
Nah, I did. I think it was purely on the superficial level 'a better movie', but also a more tired one. We've seen aliens hunting hapless fearful people in the dark before, we've seen chestbursters before, we've seen the renegade android. The characters behaved more logically but ultimately I don't think Prometheus (as a very black comedy) is interested in logic - the characters are the naive inhabitants of a Star Trek universe bumbling into the Lovecraftian/Lacanian real.
