"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Sniff...

I had almost finished the USS Excelsior (my favourite ship) and the USS Dauntless (OK, so it technically wasn't starfleet but it looked cool).

Then my harddisk crashed.

But I have to say that the Akira is coming along quite nicely KMN.

Someone tell me, though - what exactly is the difference between each ST ship? Externally they all seem to be based off very similar design, what's the deal going on?

They all look the same, and they don't. I couldn't tell the difference between a few of the ST ships, but I'm sure any Trekkie can

Hmmm, basically you're right, they are mostly similar in overall design with a few notable exceptions (Promethius, NX Excelsior, Defiant, Pegasus). The Promethius had the multi vectoral attack design (it split up into 3 seperate, auto piloted ships) the NX excelsior was the first experimental transwarp design (failed though) it was later converted to standard warp. The defiant had a cloaking device as did the Pegasus but the pegasus' cloak was an illegal starfleet experiment, it was nifty though as it phased out the matter in the ship which allowed it to pass through solid rock.

Every new ship (Starting with the intrepid class supposedly) has a new design of warp nacelle, in TNG it was found that warp travel was destroying the fabric of the universe and high warp speeds were restricted for ememrgency conditions only. Then the intrepid class was designed with a new type of nacelle system which was non detremental. There's too much background to cover everything but I'm sure other than more stable hull designs and general "upgrades" all starfleet ships other than the noted ones above are fairly similar.

When I read "starfleet" I thought he meant the puppet show and clicked immediately. Silly me.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

I still like my Galaxy class, especially the USS Enterprise D, NCC-1701-D (641m long, capable of warp 9.5), even though I actually started watching the show before I even went to preschool. No wonder Star Trek is permanently stuck in my head...

No more real progress, but that's only because I don't have access to my computer right now. Staying at a relative's house and my computer is 160 miles away. I'll start work again on Friday.
