to the topic at hand. I don't think it a bad idea to have a forum dedicated to your mod. in fact that's not a bad thing at all. except for one thing. where will you put your attachments and downloads, your website etc. and if you have webspace for that...why not put your forums on that webspace and host yourselves?
I don't consider NW to be a main forum. Maybe that's just because i don't go there. HLP, GW, and SG are the ones that i consider to be main forums. When VWBB **crosses himself** died, a void was left, for the time i think that SG filled it. I think of GW as VWBB reborn. we are currently hosting 10 projects....including SG1 and BSG. I don't think of the forums as a competition, but alternatives to hosting. Currently HLP is not accepting new projects, neither is GW, but i can guarantee that Hippo is. GTD Bastion is accepting projects for hosting. if you talk nice to hippo, maybe the project doesn't have to be a mod. Maybe something like that Campaign list that shows the branches of the story line that ummmm, ummmm, uhhhh, that one guy wants to do. I think that while his name escapes me, the endeavor is worthwhile, and can really add to the experience of the game. i am looking at it as sort of an FS2 sourcebook. I like the idea, so hippo, talk to the guy before i talk matthewpapa and nighthammer into making an exception to our no more projects rule. 
Cobra and Inferno...if you guys have things that you need hosted, a forum is not the answer, Hosting is.
